Re: [Chevelle-list] Muncie linkage.

2006-07-19 Thread steve502
Dennis,
I agree with Trooper. My Muncie shifter was a pain to install, a pain to
shift, and a pain to yank out. Just buy a handle and use a good Hurst
Competition Plus shifter. The Muncie shifts like a wet noodle and is prone to
binding.especially if there is a hot chick in the nearby vicinity or a
crowd is watching you try to show off.

You can find plans on the web to make an adaptor for the Muncie Handle. It is
easyweld two pieces of steel into a T-shape and drill 4 bolt holes.

 Dennis,
The Muncie shifter linkage was real junk. Most guys changed them out
shortly after buying their car. Unless your looking for a 100 percent
correct restoration I would go with a Hurst shifter for your Muncie
transmission. If you want the correct look in the car you can adapt the
Muncie shifter handle to the Hurst linkage.

Thanks Mike,

Is a scatter shield the same as a SFI bellhousing or is it an additional piece
of metal that is welded on top of the bellhousing?

Also, What do you mean by Dialing it in? I would hope the garage doing the
install already knows this, but I am curious and would like to have some
background before I ask them.

Thanks,

 worth the risk.

Either a Lakewood or a McLeod. In either case, you need to dial it in
to ensure proper alignment. The McLeod's tend be a bit better on
alignment right out of the box.
And either will work with a GM TREMEC TKO-600. It's designed to be a

[Chevelle-list] Exhaust bypass gadgets

2006-06-29 Thread steve502
Hello,
Any of you guys running one of those nifty exhaust bypasses on your cars.

I'm thinking about putting electric ones on the car but I'm a little afraid to
spend sooo much money to GET an exhaust leak (if you know what I mean).

Summit has two types for sale:
Quick Time Performance2- 2 1/2 electric units for $299.00 -shipping
tomorrow
and...

DMH Performance 2- 2 1/2 electric units (without the Y-pipe) for $320.00
-shipping some time in November (WOW)

Anyway, I was wondering a few things:
1. Are they any good (as far as quality/ leak-free)
2. Are either of these companies any good?
3. Anyone have horror stories or things to worry about?
4. Is there an alternative to these that are better?
5. I like the ability to be loud or not-as-loud. Is there any true
performance benefit?

I already have 2 1/2 exhaust on the GTO with Flowtech Warlock mufflers, so the
bypass plugs are already in place. All I would need would be the electric
solenoid units to be in the game.

The Chevelle would need 3 units and Y-pipes to be cut in just before the
Flowmaster 40's (which are already loud).

Thanks,
Steve

[Chevelle-list] Tires and Wheels

2006-06-07 Thread steve502
I'm sure this has been covered a thousand times so the first question would be
how to look up the archived threads.

I'm trying to get tires for my 67 GTO (with later model 15 pontiac 5-spoke
wheels) and was wondering is 255/60/R15's would fit all the way around. I
figured that the room would be similar to that of a 66-67 Chevelle.

I'm trying to keep it to one size all the way around so I only need 1 spare
tire. I heard that posi-traction does not like two different tire diameters
on the rear and was hoping to keep things simple.

I wish there was a way to preview tires/wheels on your car before spending
.

Hi Pelle,

The band was Paul Revere the Raiders and the song was called Judge GTO
Breakaway.

It is also interesting to note that they were contracted a few years earlier by
GM to make a song to advertise the introduction of the 66 Chevelle. It was
called SS 396. SS 396 and a flip-side song called Camaro were burned to
45's and given out by dealerships to customers during the same time.

I have the Delaership 45 around here somewhere and I have both SS396 and Judge

[Chevelle-list] Clearance Question

2006-05-11 Thread steve502
Does anybody out there have a 70-72 that is using the Cowl Induction air
cleaner with an aftermarket intake? If so, did you have to make any mods to
make it fit? What Carb / intake are you using? I've been told that a Holley
is shorter than the AFB style carb. Is that correct?

Thanks in advance,
Steve

[Chevelle-list] Cowl Induction question

2006-05-09 Thread steve502
I was wondering if anyone knew if you can still use your cowl induction air
cleaner if you use an Edelbrock dual-plane intake manifold (performer RPM) with
a Holley carb instead of the factory single-plane one? Will there be enough
clearance? If not, what if I did not re-use the factory spacer? It takes up
about 2 inches.

I'm running a short-deck big-block

If I can't use this Edelbrock intake, is there one that I can use that has
better flow than the stock factory one?

Thanks,
Steve

[Chevelle-list] Single vs Dual Plane manifolds

2005-05-02 Thread steve502
I currently have an Edelbrock Dual Plane Performer RPM manifold on my 454 with
a AFB style car. My car is a 70 Chevelle and I would like to make it look more
original without loosing too much performance (actually I want to go faster if
possible). I have the original Cowl Induction air cleaner but it won't fit
under the hood with the current setup. I know that the air cleaner is made to
fit on a Holley carb so I guess I'm going to have to eventually break down and
buy oneIf I can find one that runs as good as the AFB ones.

Do I also need to switch out my dual-plane manifold for a single-plane one? If
so, is there one that won't hinder performance? I am assuming from everyone's
postings that dual-plane ones are better.

Other specs for my set-up:
454 2 bolt main block (bored 30 over)
LS6 solid cam
10.25:1 compression
Edelbrock square-port aluminum heads
Roller Rockers
HEI ignition

Is anyone out there using a Cowl air cleaner with a dual-plane manifold? If
so, what is the trick?

Thanks for the help and information

I realized that I should probably replace the blower motor too as long as I
have everything apart. Right now it doesn't work. I'll have too see if it's
even getting power. It should be because the wiring harness is new (although
I guess the relay could be bad, I don't know...). Even if I can get the
current motor to work, I'd figure it's probably a good idea to replace it
 while I have everything apart.

I don't believe that is correct John. It would probably be easier if
you remove the inner fender, but the outer fender does not need to be
removed. If you've never removed the inner fender, its not hard but
 can be a pain.

Soak the captured nuts with PB Blaster, remove the battery and
anything attached to the drivers side inner fender. Wheel must be
removed. There are 15-20 bolts holding the inner in place. 2 with
large flat washers on back wall, 2 with large cup washers on top (go
into the fender ) , several in front near battery - access from
underneath. I replaced all of the bolts nut plates the first time
I removed the inner fender and have had no problems with them since.

On my 72 with Air, I had to remove the passenger compartment heating
box to get to the heater core. As I recall (over 10 years ago) the
stud/nut combo that hold the box in place are on the motor side of the
firewall. Removing the inner fender allowed easy access to several
of these studs/nuts. I don't think that I had to remove the
fiberglass suitcase on the motor side, but may have.

[Chevelle-list] Dyno 2000 help

2005-04-02 Thread steve502

Hello,
I was trying out Dyno 2000 on my computer and was trying to figure out my
engine specs. I'm having trouble figuring out what I need to put in the
various boxes. The cylinder head section shouldn't be too hard to figure out.
I'm running an Edelbrock Performer dual plane manifold (Square port/ closed
chamber). I figure I can probably get the specs I need from their website once
I figure out the exact one I have.
The trick is the cam specs I'm running an LS-6 Solid cam. I can't figure
out what numbers I need to use for Int Lift @ Valve and Exh Lift @ Valve.
I'm also not sure the difference between seat-to-seat timing and 0.050 lift.
The other part I'm not sure about is the IVO (BTDC),EVO (BBDC), IVC(ABDC), and
EVC(ATDC). The default values seems to be 31.0, 67.0, 67.0, and 31.0
respectively. Should I leave those values?

Thanks for your help. Obviously, I never assembled an engine before. I am
looking for an upgrade for my tired LS5 and spoke with Ohio Crankshaft. They
suggested a Merlin III 548ci short block with my Edelbrock heads. In the long
run, I should probably ditch the LS6 cam for something else, No?

BTW, does anyone have anything to say (Pro or Con) about Ohio Crankshaft?
Their short blocks seem much less expensive than the GM crate motor options and
have more potential.

the purchase of a $371,300.00 can be. I guess I'm not shocked to see that the
winner did not pay. Check it out if you are interested it is item #
3962513751 .

Sorry it is not a Chevelle specific post, but I knew a few of the guys were
following it. Read the feedback from the buyer and seller...it is interesting.
Also check out the construction site web page under recent news and see what
the attorneys are up too.

I'll give em $10.00 for the flag and the frame.

BTW... does the seller still have to pay the commission?

OUCH,
Steve

[Chevelle-list] Chevelle sighting

2005-03-01 Thread steve502
I just bought a used movie from Blockbuster called Surviving Christmas
(mostly to watch Christina Applegate). I was surprised to find that her dad
purchases a beautiful red 70 SS Chevelle. I think there were 454 markings on
the fender, it had black stripes, cowl induction, and red interior.
Unfortunately, you only get to see the car in two or three scenes. Either way,
It is a much nicer car than the butchered one in the crummy movie Speed
Demon.

Has anybody on the list ever had your car featured in a movie? How do you get
to do that?

Re: [Chevelle-list] gauge conversion

2005-02-05 Thread steve502
Great question. I have been pondering the same question. My problem is that I
have a gauge kit (that came in the trunk of the car when I baught it)but I
don't know if it works. My dilema is whether to install the untested gauge kit
and switch wiring harnesses or just get the idiot light to guage conversion and
use the harness already in the car. Either way, its going to cost some
moneydamn.

The other bummer of it iswhy didn't GM have an oil pressure gauge in 70? I
think this is probably the most important thing to watch. Does anybody make a
gauge conversion kit that has a stock looking oil pressure gauge. I'd rather
have that than a stupid clock.
Sorry for the rant, I'm just perplexed.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Chevelle on a movie cover

2004-12-22 Thread steve502
I purchased Speed Demon without actually watching the movie. I wouldn't
recommend that. It is the most cheesy bizzare movie I ever saw...and you don't
get to see much of the car. I believe they did that on purpose because it had
a 70 front clip, a 71-72 rear bumper, SS markings (with a Malibu dash). I
think it just made me mad. If you are really twisted, you might like the parts
in the movie where the car gang worships an engine by placing it in the
middle of a pentagram, stripping down to their underwear and workboots, and
marching around it. Personally, I had to fast-forward through the parts where
they rubbed motor oil over each other.

As far as Speed TV. I agree. I don't even watch it anymore and usually tune
into the Horsepower Block on Spike TV.

Merry Christmas,

I was at Blockbuster last night and saw a movie with a '70 on the cover. I
think it was called Speed Demon. The description on the back of it was
something like a group of hot rodders take over a small town and conjur up
the supernatural in their quest for speed while some guy tries to take the
town back from the leader, who I believe drives the '70. Or maybe the hero
drives the '70. It looked pretty cheesy, but I couldn't pass up a a movie
with a Chevelle on the cover without picking it up for a second. :-)

It looks like something they would've shown on the old Lost Drive-In on
NASCAR TV -- err, Speed TV.

I figure someone here might find it interesting or amusing. Maybe I'll rent
it next time I'm up there.

 [Begin Speed TV rant]
As an aside, is there anyone else here who thinks Speed TV has absolutely
gone to hell and is wy over-exposing NASCAR? The channel is almost
unwatchable anymore, as I could almost care less about NASCAR. (NASCAR is
WWE on wheels -- it's all about the personalities/drama, IMO, but that's
another rant) You could watch that channel and never even know that NHRA
exists. A non-car person watching that channel would think motorsports in
this country was either NASCAR or imp0rt tuner and nothing else. Maybe
I just watch at the wrong times.

Its been a long time since I did any wiring on my car, but I think I had the
same problem or something similar to your problem due to a voltage drop (About
8 volts -vs- 12+). I believe it was caused by a factory resistor that reduces
your ignition voltage down for stock applications. I was installing HEI and it
needed a full 12 volts to even start. Is there a posibility that your power
lead is running through one of these resistors?

Good luck, I know electrical work can be a nightmare, but one of these guys on

We live in Arizona. Tennessee is a bit of a drive, but it might be worth it.
I might get him to enter into the Phoenix World of Wheels, the Super Chevy

Since I saw how perfect his car is, I've been thinking harder about cleaning up

I wish I could show you guys pictures of dad's car, but I don't know how to

I can drive my Chevelle to our municipal airport and get gas at the Chevron
beside the runway. It is a low lead gas that floats between 105 and 112
octaneand it is $2.70 a gallon. I guess that is not bad since 87 octane at
the gas stations cost $1.97 around here (Central Arizona).

BTW, I do have hardened valve seats and I only get about 2 gallons per tank
mixed with 91 octane. I don't want to stoke the fire too much because I don't
want to burn out my engine.

Re: Re: [Chevelle-list] Comment Pertaining To Election

2004-10-23 Thread steve502
Well this is related to our hobby. I know many people think that Bush is in the
Saudi's pockets and willing to let gas go higher and higher, but I wanted to point out
a fact that can be verified through congressional records. John Kerry has voted to
raise taxes on gas 11 times. This includes the 50 cent per gallon tax voted for in
Febuary or March of 1994.

I also think that everyone should turn the spin off and vote for whoever they want
after picking the topics that are important to them and then spending a while
conducting research on facts rather than watching slanted news/ comentary/
documentaries/ concerts/ or movies. I don't think any choice will be perfect, but
there is a good arguement that this election will have a lasting impact on the future
of our country and our hobby. The winner of this election will be appointing judges
at various levels and making important decisions regarding every aspect of our lives
(including jobs, pay, insurance, healthcare, social welfare- and who is going to pay
for it). I pray that the best man wins and I can continue enjoying life with my
family and my Chevelle without the fear of terror or anything else that restricts my
way of life.

Please cut the negativity and vote responsibly.

continue this tradition by bringing my wife and son home from the hospital in my red
70 Chevelle SS454. I was wondering if anyone has ever installed the latch-lock system
in their cars for the new-style car seats. Does anyone know where I can purchase a
latch system that would fit without major modifications? I know a welder who could
make the hoods and bolt them to the body behind the seat if necessary, but I would
rather find a set that fits and bolt them in without any permanent welding.
Does anyone have any experience in this arena? I doubt I'm the first guy to try this
endeavor.

Yep, Back in 66 I had a 66 GTO 360hp with redline Tigerpaws. New then low
 profile
tires to be a bit more sticky. Tigerpaws were IT in those days and red
 lines were the
thing for MUSCLE. Obviously Tigerpaws were advertised with the big Tiger
 with outstretched
paws that were huge compared to the Tiger behind them.
And as mentioned before with great detail the Tiger in your tank came from
 ESSO.

Now my question regarding tires. These days it is easy to find a Goodyear
 dealer but I am
not sure about a Goodrich seller. Did the Goodrich tires come out on
 Chevelles from the factory?
1970? What are the opinions about performance in use on the street,
 durability and longevity
between the two tires? I am going to buy a new set of tires for my 70 Malibu
 Sport Coupe
and can get Goodyear easily. It may take some hunting to find Goodrich in my
 area. Would it
 be worth it? Thanks, Mike

I'm not sure if it's the same Ron, but with all the flack I was catching, I
thought that is what you were referring to. This Ron runs a shop called
Ron's Restorations. Is that the one who screwed you? I am biased now, and
wouldn't take my car to anyone named Ron! ;-)
