Dupont 2570 is a DTM (direct to metal) epoxy
primer and doesn't require any special pretreatment to the metal (just
clean, oil free, dirt free surface). PrepSol will do this for you. An
epoxy primer is the primer of choice if your going to need time to finish
the project, need a water proof primer, need durability, or want to do body
work over the primer. Although VariPrime is a good self etch primer is IS
porous, will absorb water and will start to rust if not topcoated. I've seen
VariPrime start to rust in about a week in places where guys have touch the
car.

While epoxy is good it requires metal
treating whereas the Vari-Prime is a self etching primer which is not
porous and it has a longer gun life which decreases waste. And nothing
against PPG, Vari-Prime is the only DuPont paint I use, the rest is PPG, I
just don't like the PPG self etching primer. Plus epoxy seems to clog
sandpaper when block sanding and the Vari-Prime doesn't.

On the other hand, epoxy is good on
undersides and frames and other items that can by painted right away as
soon as the epoxy flashes, in other words without
  sanding.

  I would
recommend using an epoxy primer on all parts before using a primer
surfacer or even body filler. Epoxy is waterproof whereas any primer
surfacer is porous and will hold moisture. Not sealing steel from the
elements, even stored in a garage can…not can…WILL lead to rust later.

  I would
recommend a 2 part primer, any brand, over lacquer primer for fill
capabilities and durability. Anything acrylic lacquer is now in the
  dinosaur family.

  Basecoat
clearcoat systems will not only give you a superior finish over
anything the factory used “back in the day” but it is easier for a
novice to use and get a nice paint job. Acrylic enamels and other
single stage metallics are more difficult to get metallic even with.
Basecoat clearcoat systems make getting metallics even easy. Basecoat
clearcoat is also much easier to spot repair in the event that
something might happen to your baby.

  I sell PPG
paints so my loyalty is with them but, honestly, any major brand of
paint has done their homework and can offer you products that will
  make you happy.

I'd like to
poll the list members concerning their choice in paints for their
Chevelles. More specifically, did you use enamel, lacquer, base
/top coat system, etc.

Also advice on
what to look for or avoid in paints / painting would be great. I'm a
ways off before my 66 is ready for paint, but as I'm doing the bodywork,
I'd like to come up with a plan.

I have decided to sell my 72
Chevelle do to other interests.  I have a Texas car that is for the most
part rust free.  It has had floor board work and what little rust was on
it was repaired right.  It is a non-Malibu, non-SS but it is a straight 2
dr HT with the original black vinyl top.  Original 350 engine untouched
except for a 72 intake and 4 bbl from an elCamino.  I was originally an
auto but is currently set up for stick.  The trans with it is an original
3 speed "72" but not from the same Chevelle.  It runs perfect and has a
nice interior.  Headliner is great as well as the dash.  I have new
carpet for it.  The interior is currently out of the car so careful
inspection can be made as to its condition.  I have a lot of new OEM trim
pieces.  It has factory AC.  It is a package deal.  It has 121K
original and has been in a garage for 13 years.  Will be gone till the
14th of June and will answer e-mails then.  Make me an
  offer.

I wouldn't have any luck,at all. Walking across the room last night,I felt
something pop in my right foot. Pain was instantaneous and my first
thought
was I had snapped an Achilles tendon. Off to the ER and after x-rays,it
looks like the main load-bearing bone just broke. Waiting to see an
orthopedic specialist today. I'm facing possible surgery and even if I
dodge
that bullet, will be looking at least 6-8 weeks off work. Being a
shift-worker,the cut in pay is bad enough but there is a good chance I
might
have to stay home & miss Chevellabration next month. Now,I'm really
concerned. Have never broken any bones in my life until now and to do it
while simply walking is a tough pill to swallow. Sorry for the venting but
this really pisses me off.

Cloner,
Your opinion attacked someone's project. You also did it in the presence
of your peers, who all share the same interest in Chevelle's and a like.
Some of your peers stepped up, like many would, if a friend was attacked
verbally or physically. You then proceed to call those who stepped up
"loser" (should have been plural). You say you have 20 years experience
working on Chevelle's, hopefully during that same time you have learned how
to respectively treat people and have acquired the integrity to apologize
for your actions, learn from it and move on. I think you have a pretty
good idea of how the List of your peers expects we treat each other. If
you disagree, perhaps you should find a new list where people like you and
your opinions will be tolerated.

in 72, nothing in the VIN ID's an SS. UNLESS the engine digit is a W
. W is for 454 and the only 72 chevelle to get the 454 was the SS.
More than likely its a clone.

I hope someone can help me. I have a 1970 Chevelle Malibu that is in the
shop being painted. I am installing a SS hood and replacing the hinges and
springs at the same time. My problem is I have been told so many different
color combinations for the hinge and spring I do not know what they should
be. Does anyone out there know the correct color combination? Even though
this will not be the original hood I still would like to have everything
painted correctly.
This question I think I already know the answer, but will ask. On the 1970
Chevelle Malibu there is chrome or stainless steel moldings that run from
the front of the fender along the edge to the drip rail of the rear window.
Are these available either original equipment or reproduction new? The ones
on the car are not in too bad of condition, but do have a couple of small
dents and quite a bit of scratching so I would like to replace them. I am
trying to eliminate deducted points in judging as well as appearance with a
new paint job.
Sorry for the book I just wrote.
Thanks

In June of 1972 I rode home from the hospital in my father's red 66
Chevelle SS. It was my first ride in a car. I rode home in the front
seat in my mother's arms.

I wanted to carry on this tradition with my family, so I finally replaced
my heater core (it went out about 11 years ago)and installed rear
seatbelts for the carseat (the old ones were gone when I bought my car in
1986).

I'm happy to announce that my new baby son, George Harrison Lentz, took
his first ride in a car by coming home from the hospital in my red 70
Chevelle SS.

Now the only question is what year Chevelle will he be bringing his
children home from the hospital in? My wife says a 64, but I'm hoping for
a 65 or 67. Either way, I can't wait to get him in the garage with me and
see what he eventually picks.

Proud dad,
Steve Lentz

Hey Jimmy,  from the sounds from you, i
wouldn't worry about the repairs  do them  these cars are a good
investment, over time they only go up in value,  seems like realestate
allmost lol, plus it's a good hobby (it can get expensive though) but all
depends on how you go about restoring it, meaning,  you can go to yard
sales swapmeets things of that nature or you can get catalogs and get brand new.
Now as for your vin# it reads as follows 1= chevrolet   D=
Malibu,custom Elcamino, Concours=wagon. (obviousley it's a malibu) 37= 2
door sportcoupe F= 307 2barrel carb V8 130 horsepower (so much for the
350) 2= 1972 B= Baltimore MD (where it was built) the rest of the numbers
are production numbers in sequence.  hope this helped you in your
decision.  Write back,  Ken

Hey Ken,thanks for getting back to me .
it's has a chevelle tag on the trunk and Malibu tags on the inside door
panels.the VIN is 1D37F2B504042. I tried checking the VIN # on line but
it only showed more modern 17 character VIN #'s.I was told it has a 350
cid, auto on the column, drum brakes, none posi rear. I bought the car
from a parking garage that had a lein on the car that the original owner
abandoned there . so I don't know much about the cars history. What I do
know is that the car needs both 1/4's( rotted out above the tail lights
both sides) a driver side door and some work on the roof, it looks like
somebody was standing/jumping on it because it's dented and slightly creased
above the back window. The rest of the car looks pretty solid ?.I'm pretty sure
it's repairable . any thoughts ? Hopefully good ones, because I've been going
through the" Special Interest Vehicles" parts section making a tentative wish
  list.i.e..cowl hood, 454,Muncie 4spd,disc brake conversion,373 posi. am I
a dreamer or does this sound realistic. Thanks again, Jimmy

But i beleive that most times you put gasoline in the tank your getting from
a tank that is the ground and with the gas you get some water as well so
your never getting all the water out but again thats where the drygas comes
in to play it's part. Ken

It is, but condensation can get in there any time the tank is not full.
It's
the same for the idea behind running until your mufflers are hot. Anyway,
I've never had any trouble leaving the tank empty, but I have had trouble
with cars sitting longer than expected. By the time I sold my Olds, it was
on the dregs of some gas that was a year old (though it still ran fine). I
advised the buyer to put some fresh stuff in there right away, which he
sort
of had to do anyway. My El Camino was also laid up for something like 3 or
4
years (from the time I bought it) before I finally got it on the road. I
wouldn't have wanted a full tank of gas to get that old. So, I think there
are times when empty is better, but if you are absolutely sure that you'll
be burning off that gas in 5 or 6 months a full tank is probably better.

-Original Message-
The reason for filling the tank, I thought, was to keep the condensation
from forming on the upper portions of the tank, hence keeping the inside
of
the tank from rusting.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Putting baby to bed

2004-11-10 Thread suprsprt72
Well were talking only 5 months, i can't beleive that the full tank of gas
will go bad in 5 moths of sitting, and the condensation, well ya will get a
little but thats why we put the "dry gas" in there, to avoid a lot of
condensation, this info does not come from me alone but from the experts up
in Canada that have much colder and longer winters then i do in
massachusetts. The info comes from the car club in Canada that i am a member
of, it is called Canadian Classics Chevelle and Beaumonts. I'm sure some on
the list knows of them. Ken, 72 HeavyChevy Chevelle

I have to wonder about the idea that it's better to leave a full tank to
avoid condensation, and then run old gas in the spring (lets face it, you
can get condensation in the tank on any cool night and the air is drier in
winter anyway), vs. the idea of leaving it bone empty and then filling
with
fresh gas in the spring. I have always gone with the latter and have not
had
any problems as a result. I agree that it's a good idea to start it about
once a month if you can. Just buy 50 cents worth of gas, prime the carb
with
a little and put the rest in the tank. That way the gas in the tank never
gets really old.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Putting baby to bed

2004-11-10 Thread suprsprt72
Hello, well people will agree and people won't agree, but i have never had a
problem with my 72, in the 6 years of newengland hardship weather, it has a
holley 750, i fill tank like you said, put a bottle of dry gas in her, go
for a 5 mile drive one way, course 5 mile drive back, put it in storage, put
car cover over and return in march to take her out, the only thing i need to
do sometimes is bring a little can of starting fluid and spray the card and
pump the crap out of it and it fires right up, also u could disconnect the
battery if you choose, i think if you start it up every so often the
condensation that is in the tank will of course go through exhaust and the
water will sit in there and start rusting, thats why i take it for a good
run first and leave it alone till march. Ken, 72 "HeavyChevy" Chevelle

Well leaves are gone, it's cold out, freeze warnings, etc.
So I washed the the car (64SS), added a bottle of dry gas, gave her a dose
of Stabil, and filled the tank.
Now car sits for the winter, hoping for a few stray warm days to start her
up once in a while.
Any ideas on keeping the carb from drying out?
Seems to be the weak link in getting car to start after it sits.

      Anyone looking
for a 1969 Chevelle SS to restore?  A friend of my just found one.
It does need total restored but he has the number matching 396 engine.
It appears to be an original 4 speed, bucket seat car but the 4 speed is not
there.  The guy who had it was in a wheel chair and they were going to
turn it into an automatic but never did.  The 4 speed was already sold.
The car is located in Western Maryland. I will make a list of what the
car has this weekend.  He is going to be asking around
  5000.

  Some
came with steel and some came with plastic, but I've never heard of one of
each before. Either one (in pairs) is correct

  We
are restoring a 71 Chevelle 454 with factory air.
  Trying for
"factory correct" resto for the most part.  Currently, the driver's
side inner fender well is plastic and the passenger's side inner fender
well is steel.  Is this common and factory correct or not ? Should we
  restore to both steel ?

  Thanks guys !

I really like PPG's basecoat/clearcoat process and they really support the

Another reason is I work for PPG Industries in the Glass division.

Merry Christmas guys !There is a "LS6 Chevelle" listed on ebay
thats for sale in Florida. My memory is fading, but didn't GM sell LS6's
without any power options (other that the manditory disc brakes) such as air
and power steering? Or were there LS6's that came with air. I thought that
the air option was only availible on LS5's and down.Curious minds
(or is that a fading mind) are wondering.   ThanksBill
CHello all,
To my knowledge, LS6 Chevelle's never came with AC however
power disc brakes did come with them. Power Steering wasa an option but few
had it. My 70 Chevelle is a factory SS LS6 car with Power Disc Brakes and an
AM radio, no PS, no AC. At the speed it can make who needs AC anyway.

sounds like you have a HeavyChevy on your hands the material, cloth with
vynal was the standard material for the car, the all vynal was an option,
you could only get,the HeavyChevy with the model#13437, also those door
panels were on the HeavyChevy's 1971 were with a white accent insert and
1972 wassimulated wood grain, you have a all rubber floor mat instead of

  I'm fixing the brakes because
  the rear cylinders is leaking!
  Thats no problem! I'm fixing
  that!

  My question is!
Where am I supposed to put the
  brake fluid?
There's two "chambers" one large & one small.
(where I suppose I should put the
  fluid)
Am I supposed to put brake fluid in both of
  this
  chambers?
One of them is empty (maybe because of the
  leaking rear brakes?)

Hi Steve,
i 'm useing the Hurst Comp Plus Shifter in my 72 Chevelle, but i don't have the console to hide the boot and the retainer ring, my boot and ring from hurst is much larger then the stock and it won't screw down at all 4 corners cause of the size, i'm still at a loss on what i can do to make this look like it was from the factory, i bought a new boot and ring but can't use them because of the shifter, i have a bench seat also, i hate to have to bye a muncie shifter and have those darn shifting problems happen to me   so i'm with you on this one  thanks

Hello Fellow Chevelle owners,
i didn' relize i hit a  hot topic about Hurst & Muncie, i am though enjoying the responces, and gaining some insite on it but my question still stands, what is everyone useing for there Muncie 4 speed with the Bench seat to make the Boot and  Boot Retainer Ring line up in the center of the hump plate? Do i have to use a muncie shifter and attach it in to the crossmember and go through the binding or is there another alternative? And does someone make an after market one to represent the Muncie shifter? In the case that i have to use the Muncie?  Thanks Again Peoples
