I bought a rear window/trunk steel panel from NPD for my '66. It's one of
the few pieces that were not Goodmark. I had to do some massaging to get it
to fit before welding. Goodmark I think makes the most accurate parts. And
even these parts may need a little work to fit properly.

 Thanks Clint,
My El Camino just got all of the glass put back in and it's second (and
last) coat of primer. Hopefully it will be painted this week (finally!)
and
then all of the weatherstrips, moldings, emblems, bumpers, etc. have to be
put back. Then I will bring it home but I will still need to do the carpet

padding, headliner, seat, swap out that doofy steering wheel, install the
forward lighting engine harnesses (from MH), complete exhaust, brakes
all
around (for good measure), rear shocks springs (front steering
suspension is done) and tires. All together, I'd say it will be in the
body
shop for at least two more weeks and then I will need at least a
couple/few
weeks to do the additional work. Hopefully we'll get some good weather and
be able to drive it some before the winter starts to precipitate, but
with
my luck I'll get it done just in time to put it away until spring.

Clint,
I haven't personally used their parts but I've seen several of
them. I have an old friend who owns a body shop. Dave does quite a few
of the older cars uses a lot of their parts. He thought enough of
them to get set up as a Goodmark Distibutor.
Most recently, he's restoring a '70 LS6 car with 29,000 miles!
This car had spent the last 15 years parked outside needs new quarter

I just called one of the sheet metal manufacturers and was told that the

Makes me wonder where they get the cars that they test-fit these things on.
I wonder if they take volunteers, or if they just go to some junkyard and

I believe they do that whenever possible, but I know for a fact that
sometimes the only way is to use a healthy panel to create a foam mold
from, and then use the foam imprint to create a die for a new panel.
Either way, the new panel has to be test-fitted. I was just wondering if

Well it's a sure thing that nothing beats NOS stuff, but it's hard to find usually and very expensive. Most of us, at least I cannot, afford to pay the price for it when it is available. I have heard the best feedback about the stuff the Goodmark sells. I personally have had panels fit, and ones that didn't. My worst experiences have been with replacement 1/4 skins. If I could go back, I would get the full repro 1/4 instead of the skins.

RE: [Chevelle-List] Re: Repro Sheetmetal...

2002-11-17 Thread John Nasta
p.s. I also just sold a 70-72 non-functional SS hood from Goodmark and the
customer said it did not fit right. The customer was a body shop and the guy
told me he had been in the business 12 years and the hood was not made
right. He ended up taking the skin off the frame and cutting it down some in
the back where it was too wide, and ten welding the skin back onto the
frame. He said that in the long run it turned out dine, but only because he
really knows what he is doing.

The resolution was that Goodmark gave me the name and number of their
research and development guy to pass on to the customer. They spoke about
exactly what was going on with the fit, and Goodmark offered to either send
another hood or replace it with other parts. The customer figured he could
fix the hood and that another one might have the same exact problem, so he
opted for other parts. I have to say that Goodmark followed through nicely
even though their was a problem. The customer has since ordered more stuff
from me and told me that he is very satisfied with what Goodmark sent him to
make up for the hood.

So far this is the only problem I have had with sheet metal.

Well, I'm outta here for the night. I promised myself that I would not sit
up late again tonight writing emails. I have too much to get done tomorrow
and I'd like to be bright eyed and bushy tailed as they say. Sunday is the
only day that I ever even consider taking off, and this was a nice relaxing
day watching the Giants with a couple of old buddies.

There are two companies, both right here in the US, contracting to have
the
large sheet metal parts made. Both companies are having their stuff made
in
Taiwan. Even the Authorized GM large sheet metal parts are made in Taiwan.

There is a third company (also right here in the US) that makes pretty
much
all of the patch panels (lower fender patches, lower door patches, lower
quarter patches, etc.). Those are actually made in the USA.

Trim Parts says that their stuff is made in America, but I've been told
that it is actually made in North America, a.k.a. Mexico. I can't prove or
 disprove that.

There is a company that makes fuel tanks in Taiwan and another in Canada.

I put a full quarter skin, a lower quarter patch panel, and a new hood on
my
El Camino and the body man said it all fit perfectly. None of it was from
Goodmark. You can see the pictures at http://johnnasta.com/elcamino

For what it's worth, there is a company up here in Solon, Ohio called Tabco,
that makes many replacement panels for cars. They are all stamped in house,
I have been there to work on their equipment. I can't speak for their

 John Nasta and others-

I was told at a swap meet by a nationally known vendor that there are two
primary manufacturers of repro sheet metal - hoods, fenders, quarters,
floors, etc. One is pretty chinsy - poor fit, poor lines, etc - and the
other was much better. Of course, all they carry is the better stuff...

Do you have any comments or knowledge about this claim? Where does this
 stuff come from?

2002-11-17 Thread John Nasta

Jason, the
panel under the window is the only piece that my body man had to hassle a bit
with on my 69 El Camino. It has to be cut to size and it does not come with the
rivets that the molding clips attach to. He had to tap holes and thread little
screws into it and tack-weld them from the back so that there would be some
studs to attach the molding clips to. He said that was very tedious.

Now I'm
really out of here (I swear).

2002-11-17 Thread Dwight Fulton

I have been doing bodywork for almost 30 yrs. now and in my experience
there are no perfect panels. Even new sheetmetal from the Big 3 has to have some
rework done on it before it's perfect. The thing to remember is you get what you
pay for. If your buying 1/4's buy the full quarter , they always fit better than
skins but they will still need some massaging to fit.
Patch Panels are the worst, Partial skins are better, Full skinsare
even better Full Panels are even better FactoryNOS is
nervona.
