Re: [Chevelle-List] Re: Repro Sheetmetal
I bought a rear window/trunk steel panel from NPD for my '66. It's one of the few pieces that were not Goodmark. I had to do some massaging to get it to fit before welding. Goodmark I think makes the most accurate parts. And even these parts may need a little work to fit properly. RE: [Chevelle-List] Re: Repro Sheetmetal
Clint, I haven't personally used their parts but I've seen several of them. I have an old friend who owns a body shop. Dave does quite a few of the older cars uses a lot of their parts. He thought enough of them to get set up as a Goodmark Distibutor. Most recently, he's restoring a '70 LS6 car with 29,000 miles! This car had spent the last 15 years parked outside needs new quarter skins. Just an FYI, I just called one of the sheet metal manufacturers and was told that the full quarter panels (not skins) for the 69 Chevelle are expected to be available by next spring. RE: [Chevelle-List] Re: Repro Sheetmetal - 69 Chevelle quarters
I believe they do that whenever possible, but I know for a fact that sometimes the only way is to use a healthy panel to create a foam mold from, and then use the foam imprint to create a die for a new panel. Either way, the new panel has to be test-fitted. I was just wondering if somebody (who is not in a hurry for their restoration) could get some free panels by volunteering the test-fit car. I can say this from experience. I put a repro 1/4 skin on my 70 and 2 repro 1/4 skins on my 69. The ones on the 69 were a horrible fit. The corners where it meets the tail light housing on the 69 were rounded and not nice sharp 90 degree corners so that made it very difficult to get thetail light housings lined up properly. There are two companies, both right here in the US, contracting to have the large sheet metal parts made. Both companies are having their stuff made in Taiwan. Well it's a sure thing that nothing beats NOS stuff, but it's hard to find usually and very expensive. Most of us, at least I cannot, afford to pay the price for it when it is available. I have heard the best feedback about the stuff the Goodmark sells. I personally have had panels fit, and ones that didn't. My worst experiences have been with replacement 1/4 skins. RE: [Chevelle-List] Re: Repro Sheetmetal...
p.s. I also just sold a 70-72 non-functional SS hood from Goodmark and the customer said it did not fit right. The customer was a body shop and the guy told me he had been in the business 12 years and the hood was not made right. He ended up taking the skin off the frame and cutting it down some in the back where it was too wide, and ten welding the skin back onto the frame. He said that in the long run it turned out dine, but only because he really knows what he is doing. The resolution was that Goodmark gave me the name and number of their research and development guy to pass on to the customer. They spoke about exactly what was going on with the fit, and Goodmark offered to either send another hood or replace it with other parts. The customer figured he could fix the hood and that another one might have the same exact problem, so he opted for other parts. I have to say that Goodmark followed through nicely even though their was a problem. The customer has since ordered more stuff from me and told me that he is very satisfied with what Goodmark sent him to make up for the hood. So far this is the only problem I have had with sheet metal. Well, I'm outta here for the night. I promised myself that I would not sit up late again tonight writing emails. I have too much to get done tomorrow and I'd like to be bright eyed and bushy tailed as they say. RE: [Chevelle-List] Re: Repro Sheetmetal
Jason, the panel under the window is the only piece that my body man had to hassle a bit with on my 69 El Camino. It has to be cut to size and it does not come with the rivets that the molding clips attach to. He had to tap holes and thread little screws into it and tack-weld them from the back so that there would be some studs to attach the molding clips to. He said that was very tedious. Now I'm really out of here (I swear). Most of us, at least I cannot, afford to pay the price for it when it is available. I have heard the best feedback about the stuff the Goodmark sells. I personally have had panels fit, and ones that didn't. My worst experiences have been with replacement 1/4 skins. If I could go back, I would get the full repro 1/4 instead of the skins. What color have you decided to go back with? Clint Hooper LT5 Registry Director Wichita Falls,Tx (940) 855-6636 '91 ZR-1 Callaway Aerobody TX TAGS: USA ZR1 http://www.LT5Registry.net/ - Original Message - From: John Nasta [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thanks Clint, My El Camino just got all of the glass put back in and it's second (and last) coat of primer. Hopefully it will be painted this week (finally!) and then all of the weatherstrips, moldings, emblems, bumpers, etc. have to be put back. Then I will bring it home but I will still need to do the carpet padding, headliner, seat, swap out that doofy steering wheel, install the forward lighting engine harnesses (from MH), complete exhaust, brakes all around (for good measure), rear shocks springs (front steering suspension is done) and tires. All together, I'd say it will be in the body shop for at least two more weeks and then I will need at least a couple/few weeks to do the additional work. Hopefully we'll get some good weather and be able to drive it some before the winter starts to precipitate, but with my luck I'll get it done just in time to put it away until spring. I had the back panel replaced in my 1967 El Camino. It was from Goodmark, and my body man was not happy with the fit. I'm really confused... I think in the end everyone wants to know that what brand or what place they can order reproduction metal from and get a good fit and decent quality. Can anyone clear things up a bit for the slow ones like me here? I feel like I'm in an econonomics class with companies A, B, and X :P Mikey - Original Message - From: John Nasta Sent: Sunday, November 17, 2002 8:36 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: [Chevelle-List] Re: Repro Sheetmetal...was Why OPG Sucks There are two companies, both right here in the US, contracting to have thelarge sheet metal parts made. Both companies are having their stuff made inTaiwan. Even the Authorized GM large sheet metal parts are made in Taiwan. There is a third company (also right here in the US) that makes pretty muchall of the patch panels (lower fender patches, lower door patches, lowerquarter patches, etc.). Those are actually made in the USA.Trim Parts says that their stuff is made in "America", but I've been toldthat it is actually made in North America, a.k.a. Mexico. I can't prove ordisprove that. There is a company that makes fuel tanks in Taiwan and another in Canada.I put a full quarter skin, a lower quarter patch panel, and a new hood on myEl Camino and the body man said it all fit perfectly. None of it was fromGoodmark. You can see the pictures at http://johnnasta.com/elcaminoJohn Nasta-Original Message-John Nasta and others-I was told at a swap meet by a nationally known vendor that there are twoprimary manufacturers of repro sheet metal - hoods, fenders, quarters, floors, etc. One is pretty chinsy - poor fit, poor lines, etc - and theother was much better. Of course, all they carry is the better stuff...Do you have any comments or knowledge about this claim? Re: [Chevelle-List] Re: Repro Sheetmetal
I have been doing bodywork for almost 30 yrs. now and in my experience there are no perfect panels. Even new sheetmetal from the Big 3 has to have some rework done on it before it's perfect. The thing to remember is you get what you pay for. If your buying 1/4's buy the full quarter , they always fit better than skins but they will still need some massaging to fit. Patch Panels are the worst, Partial skins are better, Full skinsare even better Full Panels are even better FactoryNOS is nervona.
