A good tip to save fuses is to get a flasher (like the one that goes in the
fuse block or hangs somewhere under the dash) and wire some spade lugs to it
and make it where it can be attached to the two ends where the fuse plugs
into. This will make the flasher click if there is a short. When the short
is found, (by unplugging different harnesses), the flasher will go silent
and you will know that you have located the place where the short was. And
you saved a lot of blown fuses..

having the same problem on my 66, as your having on your 65. It blows the same
circut. Two weeks ago it blew about 3 fuses in one day. But now, It doesnt blow
any fuses. I had that problem about a year ago also, so my short my be a wire
thats grounding out everynow and then, which makes it really really hard to fix.
Im going to assume that your dome light is on this circut also. Sometimes they
ground out, as mine did once. Take out the light bulb and make sure the
connectors arent touching, and put a fuse in, if it doesnt blow, there yah go,
if it does, at least you know its not those wires. -Tim1966 Chevelle

Larry,
 Just my opinion,
but:

1. It
has a malfunction that is going to be tough to troubleshoot.

2.
It's a mess and looks like spaghetti under the dash.

3. The
wiring sounds like the original which had barely adequate insulation on the
wiring for then and is way behind the quality available today. If you want to
add accessories and higher amperage alternator that just ads to the wiring not
being up to the job.

I say
3 strikes and it's out! Time to re-wire the wagon before it goes up in flames.
If you aren't much into electrical there are some "plug and play" wiring
harnesses probably available for your car from major vendors. The problem is
they aren't cheap( in MY opinion).

If you
can handle some electrical work yourself there are some lesser known companies
making generic wiring harnesses that are still color coded and each wire is
labeled. And have every option you can think of available for them such as
circuits for power seats, power windows etc.

Do
your home work and decide what's best for you and your budget. Just my 2
cents.

RE: [Chevelle-List] Electrical problem...

2002-11-27 Thread Stephen Lentz

Larry,
By no means is wiring my specialty; however, your problems seem to
be isolated to one circuit (the dash lights and taillights are on the same
circuit in a lot of older..and newer...cars). The circuit you are talking
about probably lies on your floorboard underneath the carpet on the driver's
side of the interior (at least that's where it is in my 2-door). The
insulation in these wires are verythin and may have rubbed through on some
bare metal somewherecausing a dead short.
If you raise the carpet a little on the
drivers side, youmight be able to find the harness running to the
taillights (it probably drops out of the bottom of the fuse block and runs past
your high beam dimmer switch. Look to see if the harness is rubbing
anywhere.
This will probably be a chore for you because
of your seats (the harness runs under the seat frames). Additionally, the
original harness should be encased in relativelythick plastic strip
through this area. The plasticstrip is flat and is not color coded-
usually black or brown. There are harness connectors on both ends of the
strip.
I am not sure where the wires are run near the back of your
car. My guess is that the dead short is back there somewhere. If you
have one of those electronic multi-meters from a parts store, you can probably
test the integrity of your wiring by using the supplied instruction
manual. There is a certain setting where you can touch both ends of a wire
with the two clips coming out of the multi-meter and it will tell you if there
is a closed or open connection. When you find the wire with the open
connection, then you have found the wire containing the dead short. You
can then trace the wire and locate the problem.
I hope this helps a little. If I am wrong, would someone
please correct me so I don't burn my car up like tomorrow's
turkey???
Happy Thanksgiving - Steve

Re: [Chevelle-List] Electrical problem...

Larry my advise would be to get a GM wireing
diagram.
The sys on your 65 is straight forward
.
You say you have no dash lamps or tail lamps.
could be a number of things from shorted wires to bad headlamp light
switch.
This is where I would start looking
frist.
I would also disconnect the rear tail lamp
harness ribbon at it's connector. Thus eliminating the rear lamp ect as
afault. if the problem persists when it's unpluged Yuo now
look at the front lamp harness the light switch and any visible shorted
black/orange( if memory serves me right) lamp harness wires.

With a diagram a 12v tester lamp you should
be able to find your problem .
To Blow fuses ,it has to be shorted to ground
somewhere. blow fuse = excessive current.

Larry, I had this problem on my 66, the harness wiring in the trunk was next to a
metal and rubbed
through in a small spot. The problem was intermittent, as the bare spot would contact
the metal
when hitting bumps etc...took me quite some time to figure it out. You may want to try
using a
multimeter or test light to check the wires in the trunk for shorts one by one.

Larry,

If
you're going to rewire the car and don't want the pricey factory replacement
stuff, you might give Painless wiring a look (http://www.painlesswiring.com/).
They offer a "universal"18 circuit unit (part #10202) that Summit sells
for $286. They also have a 12 circuit unit (part #10102) for $258.
For the $28 difference, I'd get the 18 circuit unit every time to allow for
expansion. While not GM color coded, the wires are color coded and marked
every few inches. Just offering an alternative if you decide to redo the
entire car.

  Larry,
   Just my opinion,
  but:

  1.
It has a malfunction that is going to be tough to
  troubleshoot.

  2.
It's a mess and looks like spaghetti under the dash.

  3.
The wiring sounds like the original which had barely adequate insulation on
the wiring for then and is way behind the quality available today. If you want
to add accessories and higher amperage alternator that just ads to the wiring
not being up to the job.

  I
say 3 strikes and it's out! Time to re-wire the wagon before it goes up in
flames. If you aren't much into electrical there are some "plug and play"
wiring harnesses probably available for your car from major vendors. The
problem is they aren't cheap( in MY opinion).

  If
you can handle some electrical work yourself there are some lesser known
companies making generic wiring harnesses that are still color coded and each
wire is labeled. And have every option you can think of available for them
such as circuits for power seats, power windows etc.

  Do
your home work and decide what's best for you and your budget. Just my 2
  cents.

  Steve

One of the ways I track stuff down is to unplug the harnesses.

1.Most have a plug that goes to the harness under the carpet which feeds the
trunk, try that first and put in fuse.

2. If it holds try the plug in the trunk (plug the one under dash back
together).
Unplug and put in fuse. If fuse holds then check out back harness. Light
bulbs can also short out if they quit the wrong way.

Larry, I had this problem on my 66, the harness wiring in the trunk was
next to a metal and rubbed
through in a small spot. The problem was intermittent, as the bare spot
would contact the metal
when hitting bumps etc...took me quite some time to figure it out. You may
want to try using a
multimeter or test light to check the wires in the trunk for shorts one by
one.

I found another fuse blown on top of my problem
like yours. Two blown fuses. Well i started probing around and found a couple of
wires grounding out.I just started unplugging them and tucking and taping the
dangiling ones and fuse blowing problems have gone away.Hope it is this simple .
Also found some "Jim McCutchin"wires under the hood and took care of them. My
battery was not secured properly, just a lot of stuff piled up and no time or
energy to tackle it until I made time.

Im having the same problem on my 66, as your having on your 65. It blows the same circut. Two weeks ago it blew about 3 fuses in one day. But now, It doesnt blow any fuses. I had that problem about a year ago also, so my short my be a wire thats grounding out everynow and then, which makes it really really hard to fix. Im going to assume that your dome light is on this circut also. Sometimes they ground out, as mine did once. Take out the light bulb and make sure the connectors arent touching, and put a fuse in, if it doesnt blow, there yah go, if it does, at least you know its not those wires.

Dale,

Thanks. I looked at your picture and my wires are not the same color but I
just fliped the two wires from the alternator to the regulator. The picture
doesnt show which is which so I had a 50/50 chance to get it right and when I
flipped them started the car and instantly knew it was right as I could hear
the alternator charging. 13.5 volts at the battery. Rock steady. I think the
previous owner must have tried to fix it because when I rebuilt that section
I copied it exactely as it was on the car. I even copied the length and for
some reason it is like three feet longer than I need. When I start to detail
the engine compartment I will shorten them up to a more reasonable length.
But again thanks for the help.

[Chevelle-List] electrical problem

2002-08-01 Thread Jason Boivin

Hey all,

I have a problem with the alternator not charging.
When I bought my 65 the three wires going from the alternator to the
regulator were completely melted together.
So I took the alternator and had it tested it puts out 14.5 volts.
The regulator looked like it was original. So I bought an new one and rebuilt
the three wires with brand new wire and conectors.
I thought I put them back on the regulator in the right order.
Could someone look at theirs and tell me the order of the wires from top to
bottom?
