RE: [Chevelle-List] tire width, mail ordering tires, negotiate!

2003-07-10 Thread Rodney.
Also, another FYI about tire stores. Their prices aren't set in stone.
They will usually negotiate a price with you, especially if you bring in
a print out that you can buy "X" tire from "X" other place for "X"
amount. This has been my experience with the local Discount Tire stores
anyway (www.tires.com) YMMV

I don't know what everyone else's experience has been, but I bought a
set of Yokohama tires about 5 years ago for my Toyota MR2 from Tire
Rack. After about 1600 miles, I had a belt shift/break and Tire Rack
would do *nothing* for me. For me, mail ordering the tires and then
having to locally source the mounting & balancing just didn't add up
after having a problem, because then I had to pay for another mount &
balance (plus wait for delivery of the new tire), whereas if the same
thing happened with a local tire place, they'd probably throw in the
mount & balance, plus no delay, and I would've expected a higher level
of customer care for a tire that failed so soon. I know most people
have had positive experiences with them, but just wanted to throw this
out there...

John, You will want a 7" rim for a 235/60. 8" would be even better but
mine are 7" and work real well. If you don't find a good local source,
Summit has the BFG T/A radials for less than 70.00 each. They also have
good info in their catalog about wheel and tire size combinations. Hope
this helps. Mike

RE: [Chevelle-List] tire width

2003-07-10 Thread Brad Waller
Likely it is a 6 inch wheel then. If you have a big caliper, you can
measure the outside of the rin and subtract 1 inch. This is usually
accurate for aluminum wheels.

John,

What is the width of the wheels you have? You can squeeze 235/60 onto a
6 inch wheel, but it will look a bit funny. 7 inches would be fine for
a 235/60 tire. As you found, Tire Rack has some great comparison tools.

John, Put a little meat on your Elky. My 65 has 235/60/14's. I went with BFG
radial T/A's. I have put about 12,000 hard miles on them and am highly
satisfied. RWL or not is a personal preference. I went with RWL and Iike the
look. They are on the old standby, Cragar SS wheels. If I were starting from
scratch I would go up to 15" wheels and tires. My disc front brakes are a
very close fit with the 14's.

John this is a link to a site that you can put different size tires/rims
together and see the difference. Just something to look at.

RE: [Chevelle-List] tire width

2003-07-08 Thread John Nasta
Thanks Tom. I want to keep the same size all around. I currently have
aftermarket aluminum slot wheels on it and right now the plan is to keep
them as long as they clean up ok. I guess I should see how the rims turn out
before ordering the tires.

215 70 14 is a good size to run with if you want to keep the currect rims.
235 60 14 will fill it out a little more but you will need a at least a 7"
wide
rim. I personally would dump the 14's and upgrade to a 15 x 7 inch rim all
around. Now depending on what you want (all 4 tires the same, or 1 size on
the
front, 1 on the back for a slightly raked look) is up to you.

I guess I'm all whacked out. It used to be (I think) that 70s were wider
than your run-of the-mill 75s or 78s, and 60s were wider than that. No? Now
I'm lost. So, what tire size do I want anyway?

I don't know the "old school" tire sizes, but for 195-70-14, the "70" in the
modern tire size has nothing to do with width.

For your example, 195-75-14

195 = section width, in millimeters. This is really the width designation.
A 205 is wider than 195, but narrower than a 215.

75 = section height. This is the height of the sidewall, expressed as a
percentage of the section width. In this case, our section height is 75% of
our width, 195. (which computes to 195 x .75 = 146.5mm section height)

14 = Rim Diameter.

Actually, the sizes are usually published as such: P195/75HR14
P= Passenger car

H = Speed rating. There are 5 or 6 speed ratings. I believe H is good for
up to 112 MPH or something like that. Some of the ratings are H S, V & Z.
Z-rated, the highest, are rated for over 150 MPH.

R = Radial construction

Going from a 195-75-14 to a 195-70-14 will NOT result in a wider tire, just
one with a slightly shorter sidewall (and therefore slightly smaller overall
diameter). To get a wider tire, move up to a 205, 215, or 225. You'll also
probably end up with a 65 or 60-series tire to keep the overall diameter
from getting too tall. It's not the most intuitive system in the world,.
There are lots of tirw size calculators on the net which will let you
plug-in a tire size and spit out an overall height in inches.

When trying to come up with nearly-stock diameter tires for my '72 Camino, I
ended up using 235-60-15 tires.

Hope this helps..

Oh man, aren't those really small? I used to run 225/70 15s, and they
fill the wheel well nicely.

I tried on 3 sets for my front tires before I found the right size. I
can get the size to you tonight if you want? They are 205/70 15s ( I
think). I wanted a skinnier wheel, but still need to fill up the wheel
well.
