Sorry to disagree but peks is PEX (cross-linked polyethylene). 1 inch in 10 feet is less than 1/8 inch per foot. National Standards (IAMPO OR UPC ) for horizontal drain pipe is 1/4 inch per foot (2 %  slope). 3 inch line or larger can be installed @ 1/8 inch per foot( 1% slope) if the Authority Having Jurisdiction first gives approval. 8 inch line and above can be embedded  @ 1/16 inch per foot. Even if you do not get a permit at least install it to code. One day you may want to sell the property and may find out a home inspection turns up illegal work.

My advice? At least rough it in for the bathroom (shower-sink & water
closet and on other side of wall (Garage side) laundry sink) .It will
cost you big bucks $$ to do it later. My next garage will have all. If you
do rough it in at least install the laundry sink.It can double as a urinal

Hay larry: ive just build a family dollar store and a 5 unit mini shopping center. ive plumbed all of my rent houses using a water line source called peks. it is a flexable plastic type pipe that wont burst when frozen. the only problem, is finding a guy the has the tool too crimp the connectors on. you can buy it at the hardware store and install it underground before you pour your slab,as well as your drain pipes. just remember, drop in the drain pipe should be one inch in 10 feet for most "city codes". glad i could give some help back to the LIST .everyone has been so helpfull to me!!

...and
there's a problem with this idea?   : )

If you
think about it, what's the point of a house?  It's got the tv, fridge,
bathroom, bed, food.  If you're going to build a bathroom in the garage,
then add a tv and frig, as long as you have a good quality creeper and a fast
food joint nearby, you can save a whole lot of money be eliminating the house
all together.  That would mean a few more cars that you need and tools and
parts and some more tools and those other parts you just remembered you
need...

I used to have a client who had a urinal mounted
in the wall of his garage. It was really cool. It was a trap door about 8x10
inches or so, hinged on the bottom. When it is closed it just looks like a
rectangular plastic plate on the wall. You flip it open to use it and when you
shut it, it flushes itself. He said it saved his marriage. He said it was from
some European (or maybe he said you're a-peein') company. I don’t remember the
name. Anyway, you really don’t need a "bathroom" so much as a place
to go other than inside the house. A utility sink is also a nice thing to have
in the garage (and it can function as a urinal with very little creativity, and
doesn’t require its own room).

Re: [Chevelle-list] Garage Bathroom

2005-10-05 Thread Craig Ellis

If you live in an area where freezing is not an issue,
it is a great idea. The commode and a sink is all you need and they add value to
a home. It is a simple matter to plumb for both and buy the fixtures at a later
date when more money is available. Just putting in the Schedule 40 sewer line
should be a matter of a couple hundred bucks, tops.

You can also install fittings for a floor drain
that is NOT connected to your sewer - run them to the outside for
later connection to a line leading to a perforated 55 gal drum buried
underground and it's perfect for washing cars inside. To avoid problems with the
inspector (garage drains were outlawed years ago because people dumped engine
oil, etc., down them) install the fitting about 1/4" below the
finnished floor grade and measure where they are EXACTLY in relation to the
outside edge of the floor. After inspection, a light tap with a hammer will
break away the thin cement and, voila', you've got a drain fitting. Completing
the drain is simple - the parts mate easily with 1/4 inch of "play". Avoid
sloping the floor to the drain - inspectors aren't that dumb. And NEVER dump
anything you would not want your dog to drink down ita little soapy water is
harmless but antifreeze ain't. When/if you move, plug it so some non-car-guy
doesnt abuse it.

BTW, this system is often used for hunting cabins in
Michigan - a 55 gal drum for a septic tank is sufficient if it's only in
occassional use - like a cabin.

$2600 isn't too bad if there is a lot of excavating to be
done, which you could maybe rent the equipment and dig yourself. But for $2600 I
would also want a stand up shower installed at the same time. Saves
alot of tracking thru the house which your wife will appreciate!

My garage project has been on hold for a while, but I finally have
footers dug .    My wife suggested that I install a
bathroom.   I was all for it til I got 3 bids that were way more
than  I could afford ( and more than I thought
reasonable).    Today I got 2 comparably reasonable
estimates ( is $2600 reasonable?) for a comode, utility sink and water &
  sewer connections.

$2600 otherwise spent would get me a  4-post lift or LS1
for the camaro. I could improvise a sink install and
could live without the comode.   So for the long term is the
  bathroom a good investment?

I have a full bathroom w/ a shower. and a utility sink outside on the
bathroom. Put it in - it is deffinitely worth it. I put mine in -
just remember sh*t runs down hill. Put the plumbing in the slab NOW.

Rick, I have done this kind of
work a lot in my younger years and when you get the floor poured, at least get
the plumbing set in for later if you don't want to spend the money now. But in
my opinion, 2.6k is way too much for this job. If you get the plumbing done, it
is really easy to set a commode. And when you get your walls framed, running
some copper or pvc water lines would be easy also. Personally, I could
never see paying someone an outrageous price to do something that I could do
real easy and more often than not, I could do it 1000 times better!!! Well maybe
10 times Don't know where you live, but if it is near Houston, I could help
you some afternoon. It would be a piece of cake..

I don't know if that's reasonable, but in my
opinion,  I would get a urinal and the sink, I know working in my garage,
its a big hassle trying to clean up completely then go into the house with out
leaving a mark on something, only to have to take a leak.  Plus my wife
doesn't care for the goop or other heavy duty soaps in one of the bathrooms. I
really with I had a small bathroom in my garage. But I have just finished
insulating it so it might have to wait awhile. Plus my chevelle is still always
from being drivable.
