Dale: in the first messagei saw about this,i thought they said vin plate ,may beI did not read it right.anyway ihave never seen a rivet for a vin plate for sale. but there isALOT I don't know and don't pretend to know.Like I said it was illegal to have them when i was a cop in the last century. Bob, I think youre confusing Fisher Body plate (trim/firewall tag) rivets with VIN plate rivets. I dont think states care about body tags one way or the other but VIN plates, thats another story. In some states its illegal to even remove a VIN plate regardless of the reason and its illegal in some, if not all (?), states to have VIN rivets in your possession. Re: [Chevelle-list] RE: VIN database idea?
My users of 59registry.com actually WANTED their email addresses posted, so people could come to them with questions regarding that person's car, or maybe for how to get info or tips on how to work on their own. Updating the email addresses has been cake- They send me the updated address and I update it.. 8^] As far as theft and fraud goes, my site has been up for 2 years and there have been ZERO issues. As a matter of fact, if anyone's car ever was stolen, what better way to verify the original owner! I wondered about all of the same things that you guys are worrying now about 2 years ago when I started it. As long as you monitor what's coming in on the site, you're good to go. And as far as switching VIN plates go, one call to your local police station clears that up.. They can search locally AND nationally for reportedly stolen VINs. Just my 2 cents.. Jim '66 Malibu '59 Corvette --- Dale [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Rick, I think as long as the info only contained the year and assembly plant (naturally on the VIN itself), the particulars of the car itself would be unknown, i.e., 307/350/396/454 engine wouldn't be known on 69-71 Chevelles. If someone is trying to phony up a VIN for a stolen car, they're probably going to have plates from another one anyway and if not, they can simply make one up - doesn't even have to be a correct VIN as far as selling the car goes. In fact, in a few years it might help recover a stolen car. Say I post the VIN to my El Camino and next week it gets stolen or totaled. Someone takes the VIN plate and attaches it to another El Camino and tries to sell it. Potential buyer checks the page, clicks the link and emails me about the car. I give 'em the scoop and the seller is apprehended with a phony VIN plate. Another option would be instead of putting the current owner's email address for privacy reasons or simply because email addresses do get changed, I keep a database offline of the owner's name and/or email address. A user clicks the VIN link and they send their email to me which I forward to the owner listed in the offline database. It'd then be up to the owner to contact the interested party. RE: [Chevelle-list] RE: VIN database idea?
Bob, I think youre confusing Fisher Body plate (trim/firewall tag) rivets with VIN plate rivets. I dont think states care about body tags one way or the other but VIN plates, thats another story. In some states its illegal to even remove a VIN plate regardless of the reason and its illegal in some, if not all (?), states to have VIN rivets in your possession. [Chevelle-list] RE: VIN database idea?
Rick, I think as long as the info only contained the year and assembly plant (naturally on the VIN itself), the particulars of the car itself would be unknown, i.e., 307/350/396/454 engine wouldn't be known on 69-71 Chevelles. Anyone have ideas, interested? Re: [Chevelle-list] RE: VIN database idea?
Dale, I think the VIN list is a great idea. Two weeks ago at a local cruise in the guy parked next to me (1970 GTO Judge ) told me that it was his brand new then sold so his wife wouldnt get it in the divorce. Some how by the grace of god 20 year after he sold it, he found it and bought it. It was all broke down and had been in an accident. He restored it to match his pictures of it. Let me tell you this is possibly the nicest restore I have ever seen. Ok, back to the point. The list is a great idea and I would be willing to participate. Let me know if I can help in anyway. Ryan. Also, does anyone have a set of the rear supports for a 68 SS. I dont know what they are called for sure but they look like the upper control arms but mount in front of the differential.

Like finding a birth parent through an intermediary. Great idea, surprised it hasn't been done. Neal

A rudimentary setup is done. See http://www.chevellestuff.com/tech/vin_database.htm and there's a link on the home page at http://www.chevellestuff.com/index.htm Dale McIntosh 67 El Camino 1967 Chevelle Reference CD in progress ACES #1709/TC Gold #92
Re: [Chevelle-list] RE: VIN database idea?
the only problem withchanging vin's is the rivits. I worked with stolen auto div. out of okla. city for a couple of years ,(their crooks were dumping stipped car in my county) and I asked about that same deal of changing vins ,and they said the rivits tell off on a crook. fyi bob 64SS ---Original Message--- From: The Chevelle Mailing List Date: 04/27/05 21:38:35 To: 'Rick Schaefer'; 'The Chevelle Mailing List' Subject: [Chevelle-list] RE: VIN database idea?
