Thanks Tom and Dale. I didn't find what I wanted at Firestone's site (may have just missed it). Re: [Chevelle-list] Tire size?
I have an old BFG tire information chart at http://www.chevellestuff.com/tech/tire_information.htm showing the following on a 15-inch wheel: 195x70 - 25.7 195x75 - 26.5 205x70 - 26.1 215x65 - 26.0 225x60 - 25.6 225x65 - 26.5 Other mfgs tires may vary but that should get you close. RE: [Chevelle-list] Tire size ?
OK guys, I'm asking about tire size on original SS wheels. How big of a tire will fit on them? Thanks, Mark ___ Chevelle-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://chevelles.net/mailman/listinfo/chevelle-list_chevelles.net
RE: [Chevelle-list] Tire size ?
When you are talking about 15s and 17s, that refers to the wheels rather than the tires. You can presumably have a 17 inch wheel with a low-profile tire that doesn't take up any more space than a 14 inch wheel with a higher profile tire. Re: [Chevelle-List] Tire Size
You need to give us a little more info,Ken. A lot depends on the wheel's backspacing and the car's ride height. Depending on those factors, you could probably run a 265 front and 275 rear. 275 60 15 or 255 60 15 on the back, and probably 235 60 15 on the front. Those are the widest ones In think you can run in the front. I have 275 60 15 on the rear of my 70 and 215 65 15 on the front. On my 69 I have 255 60 15 rear and 215 65 15 front. My 69 has 15 x 7 rallys all around while my 70 has 15 x 8 Cragar SST on the rear and 15 x 7 onthe front. your offset also comes into play when selecting tire sizes. I have a 69 Cutlass S that has 15 x 8 all around and I believe the tire size is 235 70 15 all around and it has no clearance issues. I'll double check when I get home tonight. Re: [Chevelle-List] : tire size for 67 Chevelle SS=original question
My 2 cents --- Just keep in mind that with this "dangerous" combination of low profile tires on large diameter wheels (I'm not talking about the insane 20-23" diameter wheels, just 17" diameter), steering response and, therefore, accident avoidance and safety of the occupants is greatly improved. Only in the hands of a seasoned driver would any such gains be a positive...any other drivers would likely not be able to realize any gain...instead it would make it easier for the car to get out of hand. That was the original reason for the lower profile tires. The ones I speak of are in the ridiculous category...17" with just an inch or so of sidewall spells trouble on rough roads at any speed (maybe that's why the cars go so slow here!) Larry, You're absolutely right. Typically though, directional tread design tires are only used on "G" machines for handling. They have real low aspect ratios (narrow side walls). Most guys just use regular performance radials which are not directional (i.e. Cooper Cobra, Firestone SS, BF Goodrich). Are we still beating this dead horse? Mark
Re: [Chevelle-List] : tire size for 67 Chevelle SS=original question
I use to work with big equipment tires. nver had to keep track of what tire went where! If there was a flat, change it and put it on the next replacement. never had a problem with tire wear-seperation, etc. just a flat or normal wear. thanks greg

Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List The fronts will be a bit taller and narrower than the rears. A great site for measuring tire sizes is http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html. Plug in the size of your front tire as the "stock" and use the rear tire as the "New". It'll show you in numbers and a rough graphic the differences in height and width. If you change the aspect ratios around, 60's on the front and 70's on the rear, it might look better overall. The site will also tell you how much your speedo will be off from a stock to new tire sizes. Re: [Chevelle-List] : tire size for 67 Chevelle SS=original question
The tire diameter of a 235/70x15 is approx. 27.9 while a 255/60x15 is approx. 27". The front tires will be taller than the backs. Not to mention the sidewall will be taller on the 70 series. Look at www.speedworldmotorplex.com. On the horsepower calculator you can also plug in tire sizes and it will calculate tire diameter. This may help. I've always had good luck with either a 225/23560Rx15 all around or either one in the front and a 255/27560R15 on rear. Fronts use 6 or7" rim and backs use 8" rim. My 2 cents Mark
