Dales mentioned that real world, tires have differences. Once you select
a size or brand, go to Tirerack.com . Search for your selection, then view
the "specs" link. They give info on circumfrence, diameter, reommended
width, revs per mile and other stuff too. Very informative.

And if you do decide to go for a larger diameter (than stock) wheel/tire
combo; its really not "that" difficult to change the drive/driven gears in
your tranny.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Tires for my 67

2010-05-11 Thread Dale
Wouldn't a 70 series tire give a narrower tread footprint than a 65 series
tire for a given size? A comparable 215/65R15 and 215/70R15 BF Goodrich
Radial T/A shows a 7.0-inch tread width for the 65 series and 6.4-inch read
width for the 70 series.

Technically the blanket statement that *any* tire size change will affect
your speedometer reading is correct but as long as you keep the overall
diameter within .1 or .2 of the original, you shouldn't notice a difference.
Even with the 205/65R15 your speedometer will only read 0.1% too fast. At a
real 65mph *real* speed your speedometer will read 65.65. A taller
205/70R15 is .8" taller and will make your speedometer 3.1% too slow; a
65mph reading on your speedometer would really be 67mph.

I've owned a lot of 67 Chevelles and if you can read their sweep
speedometers within 2mph, you're doing pretty good! :*)

You might check my web page at http://chevellestuff.com/tools/tire_calc.htm.
Just plug in the 195/75R14 in the Stock tire size and play with the New tire
size. It'll compare Sidewall, Radius, Diameter, Circumference, and Revs per
mile for each size and report how slow or fast your speedometer will read as
a percentage.

One should be aware that 'calculations' don't always reflect the real world
and tire manufacturer's differ a bit and many tire sizes just aren't readily
available. Looking at the same BF Goodrich Radial T/A chart doesn't list a
205/65R15 size but does list a 225/60R15 which is .1-inch taller and would
make your speedometer read 0.4% too slow. Play with the calculator then
find your favorite tire mfg and see what they offer.

As long as the tire height stays the same, your speedo will be fine. You
need to "Plus size" your wheel tire combo. This is when you make your rim
size bigger and your tire sidewall smaller. Like going from a 14" rim and 70
series tires to a 15" rim and 60 series tires.

A lot depends on the driving conditions and weather.  Being in the Chicago area
we get all weather conditions.  When my wife needed new tires for our van I
went to Costco and they recommended Michelin HydroEdges.  Great dry weather
handling, unbelivable in wet weather - like you are on dry pavement, and real
good in snow too - which most of it is salted here, turning to water.  I just
put HydroEdges on my Camry this past weekend since I have been so pleased with
them.  Hands down if you belong to Costco they are the cheapest and offer the
best followup service - free rebalance/rotation every 6 K, free flat repair -
can't beat it and they hand torque every wheel to factory specs.

Rick,

I just turned over 111,ooo miles on a set of Michelin MTX MS on my '04
Colorado. When I first put then on, it felt like I was driving a new, different
truck. Very quiet and I felt like I was floating on air; good in the snow as
well. Still have another 5k left before changing for a new set. Tread life was
a bonus for me. Nothing, IMO, is equal to a Michelin tire. With that being
said, the Long Trails have a decent rep as far as I know, but will give you
half the tread life. At about 2/3rds the price, probably not a bad trade off.
And, btw, thay are made by the same company.

wheels? (4.25" back spacing).

I'm just looking for a nice near stock-sized tires, or something that
just looks appropriate in the wheel well.

And the same size for all 4 tires.

Thanks!

Wow, that's cool. How much wheel can you get up front? Maybe I might do
235/60/15's in the front and 255's or 275's in the back.

I have Firestone Indy 500's on my '70. The size is 255 60's on all four corners.
I have them on 15 X 7 5 spoke chrome Cragar look alikes. They fit just fine no

plenty of room between the rear inner fender and the tire. You can see for

TJ,
Save this
(and Clint's) email for when you get back and put on the 17" wheels.

I have
275/40/17s on 17" x 9.5" V45
wheels with 5 7/8" backspace by Vintage Wheel
Works and I also have the F-body front
spindles (which do change the requirements a bit).  Unless you are going
for the absolute max, then you should ease off and use 5.5" backspace in the
rear.  I had to clearance my wheel well a bit on one side of the
car.  I have lots of room to the outside, so your 285s should have
lots of room with the 5.5" backspace.
In front,
a 17x8 with 5.5" backspace would work (although being 1.5" narrower, Clint's
suggestion of 4.5" should be fine as well).  I wanted the to be the same so
I could rotate the tires, but it does make for a tight fit.  If you don't
care about that, then 255's in front should be OK.

Thomas' post answered that question but 4.5"
backspacing on a 15x8 is what you want. As for tires,255's would work well and

rim. I also don’t know why If (I) x2 (times 2) is greater than 12.125"
(G), obviously your maximum offset must be just under 4" or why G is measured
on the outside of the wheel while the caliper is on the inside, but I have time
to figure this out.

My '70 Malibu has 15s on
the back now and when the air shocks are not pumped up they rub. Offhand I
don’t know the tire size, which could be the cause of the problem. I suppose
I'm going to have to see how she sits with new shocks and then decide what to
do about tires and wheels.

A 15x8 wheel with zero offset will have around 4.5"
backspacing,TJ. Those are good numbers and why your present wheel & tire
combo fits.
When you switch to the 17's,I would suggest 4.5"
for the 17x8's and 5.5" for the 17x9.5's.

Backspace and offset are two different
animals,John. However,if you need air shocks to keep the rear tires from rubbing
the outer fenders,it's a sure bet your wheels don't have enough
backspacing.
It's a critical measurement on all wheels, not just
15". The bigger the tire, the more important it becomes.

I don’t think that’s enough
backspacing for 15x8 ARE wheels without some mods to the front lip.  I
tried 15x8 ARE Outlaw I’s on the front of my 67 and they rubbed when
turning – had to go back to 15x7 for the front.  My 15x8 rally
wheels would work on the front but not the 15x8 ARE wheels.

You forgot the Keystone Classics. But, that was the look of the day.
When I sold tires, as a young man, in the early seventies, we could sell

would come in about once a month to replace the rear tires that they had
burned off.

A side note to your side note: Futura tires are made by Lee, a
division of Goodyear. I ran a set of 70 series performance tires ( I forget
what model ) on my '91 Caprice and got excellent service out of them. If memory
serves, I put about 90 K on them with mostly highway driving. I'm running
Futura Dakota LT truck tires on the '67 GMC with good service as well.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Tires for 65 chevelle

2004-09-16 Thread 65ss.com

For the rear, if you have 8" wheels, you need a
+12mm offset or 5" backspacing.  The -12mm offset is equivalent to 4"
backspacing.

I have some 8" wheels with -6mm offset / 4 1/4"
backspacing with 275-60r15 and they rub.
As a matter of fact, I posted the known fitting
backspaces on my website www.65ss.com

I found this on chevelles.com

I have used them for years. I think they're great: good tread, traction, and

I just did a comparison on tire rack, and while the Dunlops are $10 cheaper
than the BFGs, they are equal or better in just about every rating except
snow traction. The Dunlops have a higher ratings for speed, wear, warranty,
dry traction, wet traction, ride comfort, and noise comfort. So, I guess
that's the way I'll go.

According to www.coopertires.com the rim width for this
tire should be 5.5-7.0", so you could have 14x6 or 14x7
wheels. Looks like you'll need to measure...

I had the same wide rear end in my 67 SS hardtop for a few years and ran
a 235/60x15 tire on 15x8 ARE Outlaw I wheels w/3.75" backspacing and there
wasn't much room left for a larger size.  I think 245's would have rubbed
the lettering off the tires.  I put those same wheels and tires on my 67
Elky (with a 67 rear end) and have no clearance problems at all.  It's that
little bit of extra width that'll get you.

 Got 245/60r14 on my 65 it's at 65 mph rpm @ 3100 with 3.7 gears. I look
for a rear diameter of 25 1/2" to get that speed at rpm. So that would
be a 295x50r14 for a contact patch width of 11 1/2"?
Does anyone make a 295x50r14 size tire??? If so I'll be trimin' out
the wheel wells and puttin on the MEATS!

Think it will depend on what offset wheels you have, but keep in mind by moving up to 245/60R15's you are gonna gain approx. a 1/4"-1/2" in height and 1/4"-1/2" in width     Are you running the original width rear end. [Chevelle-List] tires?

2002-05-23 Thread Capt Crunch
I need to get some new meats out back on the Chevelle. 4.10 gears and the weenie 225/60R15's that sit about 24" tall is no joy at 55 mph. How the guy I bought it from ever got anywhere quickly I don't know, but how big of tire can be fitted out back with the plain old stock Malibu springs? What is everyone else running for wider and taller tires? I do plan to go bigger later and lift the rear a touch with new slightly larger springs, but for now I'd just like to be able to hit 65 mph with out the tach reading 4 grand! Here are a couple of size I was looking at...   255/70R15 (rated to be 29.10 tall and 10.25 wide, but we all know this varies) 245/60R15 (26.55/9.45) 255/60R15 (27.05/10.25) 275/60R15 (28/11)   BTW... the back spacing on my wheels is like 4.5 or 5" if that sounds right... just kinda did a quick on the car measurement.   Your input and thoughts are appreciated, thanks Mikey

If you are only rubbing on the left, how much room do you have on the right? Its
possible that the rear is not centered.

On the lugs, many of the chain parts stores carry a variety of different styles.
Take a good look at what you have & try to match them. Or if they are American
Racing, go to their web site and find a Tech number or email address. BTW - I think
that the ralleys look great on any year chevelle.

OK guys. Here's the situ. I got a 65 SS with a later year 12 bolt rear. So I've
already lost an inch. I'm currently running Goodyear Eagle ST's P235 60R15's on 7
inch rallys and I've got some thump and rub on the left rear side. These came with
the car. Changing the rear is NOT an option at this time. Can I just go to a 225 for
added clearance or an 75R series or what?

Now I really like the Coker Red Line radials and they come in 185-235 75R15's. Now I
also have a set of American Brushed slotted 2-4 1/2's for the front and 2-7's for the
rear and they've never been mounted. They have been checked and will fit the disc
fronts. How do I find lugs to fit? These are out of production wheels. In addition
I also have a set of 15x6 rallys that I just refinished. Any and all comments and
advice greatly appreciated even if you're just thinking out loud. Let me have 'em.
THANKS.

Hi John,

Currently I have Centerline Billet
Hammers, 15x8 w/ 245/60HR15 on front (4.5" backspace) and 15x10 w/
295/50HR15 on rear (5.5" backspace).  The fronts fit just fine, but
for the rear I had to trim the inner fender lip about 3/8" and move the lower
shock mount towards the center of the car about 2" (I made relocaters out of
1/4" flat stock).  Pictures can be seen on my web page.
