Re: [Chevelle-list] To "antenna or NOT TO ANTENNA, that is the question."

2003-10-18 Thread Malibu65

An antenna for the FM broadcast band is typically a little longer than
2 feet. That's a quarter wavelength. A low impedence coax cable (50/75 ohms)
is usually supplied with them. It would even be possible to transmit
on it. AM radio wavelengths could be measured in miles so any AM antenna is
going to be too short. Most AM receivers have a little adjustment in the
side (varible capacitor) to "tume in" for best reception. An AM only antenna
should have a coil (inductor) at the base to make it appear electrically
longer and would be bad for FM recption. I could'nt tell you what's in a
windshield antenna...
On my '65, I have a 19 1/2" antenna on the back where the broadcast one
used to be, and use it with a 2 meter ham radio.

Windshield antennas are 70-72 only.  69 and older had them mounted on the fender in most cases, some were on the right quarter panel.

Nope, the original AM antenna in my 69 picks up FM stations better than any of my other cars.

I believe it comes with everything from the two-terminal lug
that attaches at the base of the windshield to the plug at the back of the
radio. I haven’t seen one in a while though and don't have one right here. Here
is the part number if you are interested - PP00102.
You can click that or type windshield antenna into the search box on our web
site.

Where would I get an antenna lead?  It's an 18 inch

Can one be made somehow?  Or whaaat!!?

Also what is this I heard that there were AM antennas

It is true that the AM antenna will not effectively pick up FM. The way the AM only radios were made, utilizing a cheaper grade antenna with a higher grade internal receiver, it is virtually impossible to use an AM only antenna for FM stations. That is why when you have an AM/FM conversion done on radios the internal receiver is changed also.

Antenna extension cables are readily available in many parts
stores.  Most aftermarket antennas I've seen have some cable with them,
just plug the extension(s) in to meet your needs.  Been a long time, but
doesn't a FM antenna hav to be a specific height for good
reception?  My wife's last two cars (93 SHO and now a 03 Sable) both have
windshield antennas and get good reception probably 75 miles out of major
areas.  After that we talk or listen to CDs anyway.  In the GR8PMKN or
my Elky, I'm listening to CDs or the highway anyway. :*)
