Re: [Chevelle-list] winter storage
i would at least put a plastic tarp under the vehicle, even if it is just dirt the underside of the car will quickly rot sitting on the damp ground, it would also be a good idea to get the tires off the ground but support it by the suspension, dont just let it hang (don;t support it by the frame) i think that can cause damage to the suspension. not positive on the engine rebuild, but you might get condensation if it was heated, cooled, over and over.and then rust. Re: [Chevelle-list] winter storage
Are you using a quality car cover? Many have a moisture layer. If you raise the car up use jack stands under the boxed part of the frame. I suggest using one layer of cinderblock covered by a one inch piece of plywood under the jack stand since the car is on dirt not concrete. Just use plastic sheeting from the hardware store the same kind that you would use under the house. Since there will not be any liquids in the block the temp does not matter. If the garage is connected to the house consider building a clean room using some 2x4 and plastic sheeting on wall the that is next to the house. You will be surprised how a small space heater will work in plastic lean-to. Also a halogen work light kicks off a bunch of heat. Re: [Chevelle-list] Winter storage
I put a "BatteryMinder" on the battery, slide soup cans over the exhaust pipes (steel wool stuffed in the end works too) to keep unexpected mice out. Mouse proof! and everyone has opinions on what works best. I remove any source of food/water and set a few traps. Cover car if it is in a dusty environment. Crack windows 1/2 inch for circulation. Holley carb bowls tend to evaporate out and can then hang open a float (been there done that) so I run the engine to full temp once or twice during winter, but then comes the condensation issue in the exhaustuahst system - you can't win. My winter Chevelle storage is actually in my basement - taking about 1/3 up, connected by a ramp (concrete floor)that is the 3rd stall in the attached garage. The incline is very gradually so I can still park other vehicles on the ramp. A garage door at the bottom of the ramp closes this basement portion off from the garage. Quite unique, heated and right by all the tools. Put this in when I built the house - building dept only required a 6" gas curb from the rest of the basement and 5/8 Firecode drywall (which should be used everywhere in my opinion). If I was better organized I could get 3 cars down there. Some people call it the "Bat Cave". Here is what I do with my 70. I clean it up thoroughly, fill the gas tank up and put some dry gas in it. Then I put it in the trailer, cap off the tailpipes with a couple rags to keep anything from entering, disconnect the battery, cover it and close the trailer. The only time it ever will come out of storage during the winter months is if I need it in the event all my other cars are down or if I decide to take it to an indoor show. Other than that, it stays in there from December to March. Tom
Re: [Chevelle-list] Winter storage
Where do you purchase the storage bags from? Thanks Tim 1966 SS 396 2004 Monte Carlo Late Model 1985 Monte Carlo Street Stock Quoting [EMAIL PROTECTED]: I store my cars in car bags. I remove the batteries, use gas treatment. The bags come with re-useable desicant packs and are rodent proof. gm66 --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: From: mike f [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: The Chevelle Mailing List chevelle-list@chevelles.net Subject: Re: [Chevelle-list] Winter storage Date: Wed, 25 Oct 2006 05:48:46 -0700 (PDT) I have see where some suggest getting most of the weight off the tires. Leave some to keep the beed. There is also a product that is a charcoal pack/s that you put in the car to pull moisture from the interior. And disconnect the battery.
