I had
a 72 Camaro as well and I know I put a HURST labeled T handle on the shifter. I
would think I did that because it was a HURST shifter as well. I am thinking it
had a round shaftwith a flat spot with HURST label engraved
onit.

I
don't know which model it was though and although I was the second owner I am
quite certain it was the factory shifter.

What's
the difference with the competition plus? Which model do you think the factory

Steve

GM did not build the H/O olds 442. Hurst bought the W30 equipped 442 cars from Oldsmobile, took them to their plant and did their thing to them. Hurst was not factory equipment on most GM vehicles although there may be some exceptions. It is sort of like what Saleen does with Mustangs. I am going to do some research on this for my own benefit just to see.

I did a lot of research on Hurst and have the Hurst book which is a great
book if you can find one. This is what I remember.
Chevelle Never used a Hurst Shifter from the factory
Camaro used a round handle Hurst shifer 1969 to 1971
The only Nova to get a Hurst was the LT1 COPO Nova that Yenko special ordered
to build his Yenko Deuce
The Chevy Hurst was a round handle that has a snap in design. This was done
to aid assembly where the shifter was on the trans with no handle before
installation then the handle was snapped in from inside the car.

Do i have to use a muncie shifter and attach it in to the crossmember and go through the binding or is there another alternative? And does someone make an after market one to represent the Muncie shifter? In the case that i have to use the Muncie? Thanks Again Peoples

There is another brand of shifter that you hardly ever hear
about, but the quality from what I have seen and heard is above anything out
there. Chuck Hansen put one in his Chevelle Wagon on a Horse Power TV show.
I had a tranny demo guy at a car show tell me there is no better shifter

on the phone confirmed his belief in their quality and said they can't be
beat.

Someone, either on this list or at TC did manage to
break one of the rods. He was trying to heat and reshape it to make it
fit his application and it
snapped.

I know
they come standard on some types of trannys when you buy them but don't
remember which ones. Tremec 5 speeds maybe?

I
think the Tremec uses an internal rail shifting arrangement. Maybe
you're thinking of theG-Force? http://www.g-forcetransmissions.com/whygforce.asp

The trouble? Very hard to find a place that sells one
outright, and they are not cheap, around $450 for a 4 speed I believe. I
think you have to go directly to the manufacturer now. For whatever reason I
don't know Jegs doesn't carry them and Summit stopped.

Maybe the
cost?

The name brand? "LONG" brand of
Shifter.

If
you want one that looks original, original would be the way to go. I don't
know if it'd work in your car or not, but on 66/67 models, you can make an
adapter to bolt the stock Muncie shifter tower to a Hurst Comp Plus
shifter. Unless someone looks underneath or pulls the console/boot, you'd
never suspect.

The Comp Plus bolts to the trans where the factory model bolted to the

My
70SS has a M21 transmission as well as a Muncie shifter. My car has a
console so I don't know if they came with different shaped handles for
non-console cars. My shifter handle bolts to the shifter assembly
horizontally with two bolts and then turns vertically at about 90 degrees coming
up through the shifter hump. About 1/3 of the way up the handle, it twists
a little and comes toward the drives seat (I assume so that the driver doesn't
have to reach over as far).

As
far as quality, I hate the stock shifter. It has a very long throw from
first to second and feels like you are shifting a sausage) I figure this
is why many Chevelle owners tossed the stock shifters out and bought Hurst
ones. I'm thinking about doing that myself and figuring out some way to
attach the original shifter handle to make it look stock (the handle says Muncie
on it).

Yes,
that is true. Mine transmission binds up often using the stock shifter
assembly...usually at shows when everyone is watching or when hot girls are

back-an-forth a few times to knock it out of "Firverse" gear (not quite first

phone confirmed his belief in their quality and said they can't be beat.

Someone, either on this list or at TC did manage to break
one of the rods. He was trying to heat and reshape it to make it fit his
  application and it snapped.

  I know
they come standard on some types of trannys when you buy them but don't
remember which ones. Tremec 5 speeds maybe?

  I
think the Tremec uses an internal rail shifting arrangement. Maybe
  you're thinking of theG-Force? http://www.g-forcetransmissions.com/whygforce.asp

The trouble? Very hard to find a place that sells one outright,
and they are not cheap, around $450 for a 4 speed I believe. I think you have
to go directly to the manufacturer now. For whatever reason I don't know Jegs
doesn't carry them and Summit stopped.

  Maybe the
  cost?

  The
name brand? "LONG" brand of Shifter.

I don't agree with the Muncie shifter being Hurst.i was always told they were Muncie shifters. I have no idea who made them.
