Re: TREMEC 5sp was Re: [Chevelle-List] T-56 + BB
The problem as I see it is a 3.27 first gear trans will have a large ratio drop to second gear, almost like a 700R4. As for the .83 fifth gear,it just doesn't make a lot of sense to me. If I'm going to spend the big bucks to install an overdrive transmission,I sure as heck want more than a 17% OD in top gear. 30-40% would be the optimum. My ZR-1's sixth gear is a 50% OD. Otherwise,I'll just run a 3.25 cog in the 9" and install a 540" BB,,if the Muncie 4spd can handle it. TREMEC 5sp was Re: [Chevelle-List] T-56 + BB
Ooh, ya, the 4.10s will be plenty steep unless you have a 30" tire. 3.42, 3.55, and even up to a 3.73 would work much better. TTC has claimed that they are working on a 2.92 1st gear, but I've not heard anything about it for several months now. Even if they do it, VERY likely 5th will change to a 0.83 (rather than the 0.68), which is a bummer. Forte says he also has plans for a 2.92 1st gear, but I've not heard much about it either. My car has 4.10's. Sure hate to have to change 3rd members but if that's what it takes, that's what I'll do. The car has a 9" ford rear so a 3.25 or 3.50 ratio might work well. Clint, You could always cut back to 3.55's to put you in the 11.6 range for 1st gear or even 3.31 for 10.8. Any particular reason for the 4.10's? Re: [Chevelle-List] T-56 + BB
Hey Clint, no problem. I like to help where I can. Gear ratios here http://www.5speedTransmissions.com/tr-3550.html 3.27 1st, 0.68 5th. If you have the TH350 crossmember, you don't need to do anything but move it back about 2". The TH400 crossmember will need modified some. Yes, the TKO has a C6 31 spline yoke, You'd need to install it onto your driveshaft, and shorten the driveshaft about 2". Speedo is no problem. I also have a tech ref article at Team Chevelle, check it out here for install details specific to my '69 http://www.5speedTransmissions.com/3550_68-72abody.html (note the link) Ask away. :-) Mike, Clint Hooper wrote: > Thanks for the link and info,Mike. How much would a Tremec 5spd trans cost me,Mike? Is its 5th gear an OD gear or 1:1? Does it use the same type of shifter set-up as the T56? Sorry for asking so many questions but I'm really interested in using one of these behind a 502". It'll bolt right up to your GM bellhousing, use your clutch components (fork, linkages, 26 spline clutch, bearings, etc)! It has a 0.62 6th, is rated at 400 ft/lbs. The 6 speeds typically require more tunnel surgery, as it's a larger transmission. And the shifter location is 5-7" rearward of the Muncie shifter location. The TREMEC 5sp is rated higher at up to 525 ft/lbs,and will fit in the '68 and new GM cars without much, or any, tunnel work. The shifter is 2.75" rearward of the Muncie shifter. The 5speeds are raced regularly, drag and road racing, but I've not heard of too many 6speeds being raced. The point being that the 5sp will likely last longer behind a BB. Sure, there is a GM Aftermarket T56 available for about $1976.00. I'm not sure what T56 will bolt right up,Andre. However,I think you can buy a new T56 that will bolt up to a Muncie bolt pattern. Has anyone seen or heard of these? A T56 or Getrag 5spd behind a big Rat would make a nice combo. Any of you ACES members remember that Black '70 SS El Camino with LS6,T56,and 18" Budnik wheels that was in one of the ACES magazines? That was a killer ride. If possible,I really want to convert my ProStreet 69 over to a ProTourer by changing out the rolling stock and re-working the suspension on both ends.
