Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List You may be right.. I dunno... I just noticed that the second and third time I installed Norton it said it expired a year from the date I installed... of course this was after fdisk'ing and reinstalling the OS, so of course the registry info wasn't still in there... Shouldn't be too difficult to do a reg hack though. Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Just a note about Norton Anti-Virus 2002. I have remove the virus from many systems using NAV 2002 and it will quarantine or delete the files if you run it while the computer is in 'SAFE' mode. It cannot quarantine or delete the files in NORMAL mode because they are identified as Windows system files that are currently in use. Bob Hiller - Original Message - From: "Kelly C. Re: [Chevelle-List] Virus information update
Well, I initially scanned my entire system and it did not find anything. I then verified the current date on my definition files, 08/08/01. After seeing thread stating the definition file required a current date of 11/24/01 I then completed a live upload of my definition file which made it 11/24/01. I then scanned my system and it then detected the virus. Again my fault for not updating the file more often. Dwaine

Rodney, It can if your Norton definition file date is 08/08/01 and not 11/24/01. My bad and now I am working through it. Like it was said by others we all should update our definition files more often. Dwaine

If you delete the email and do not view it or open it then you are OK. Just as I say in previous email. Do Not Open the attachment and you will be OK. Delete the email and you will be Ok (Delete it from the Delete Folder also.) Open or View the email and you got the viurs. Please read pass emails. I am only trying to stop the virus from the email and specially from my favorite Chevelle list. Everyone must readl the emails and follow the instructions. Re: [Chevelle-List] Virus information update
Michael, Well, I remember receiving an email with no body content and opening an MP3 file that was sent earlier by another chevelle friend. Interesting the attached MP3 file had covered an earlier subject matter from the list that I sent to the group for feedback. The subject matter was about stripping and repainting a radiator. Thinking this was good I opened it and saw a quick flash of an icon short cut to MSDOS. Nothing else appeared on my screen. I sent the individual a reply asking them to resend the doc. I then checked my email later and received an invalid email address error to the individuals email address. Note: The individuals email address had an _ in front of it from the virus which makes it an invalid email address. Also, it was an MP3 file which was described by other members in the list. I then ran the virus scan with Norton's 2002 and the software identified the infected files. End of story. Now, I am working on fixing it. PS. Bob K, thanks for the information on what you did to fix the problem on your computer. Dwaine

Re: [Chevelle-List] Virus information update
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List But if you have Norton setup to scan your incoming email, it will scan the file and detect that it's badtrans. Then when you hit repair, it will say cannot repair. Then Norton asks if you want to quarantine it. When you say yes, it takes the attatchment and moves it to quarantine so that you cannot run the attachement from your email program. Thus, the virus was detected before you ran the program. So how could it have possibly infected the kernel32.exe file if the attachment was never run? It couldn't have. Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Your are right Rodney, Norton will detect the virus, but it can not repair it. You will have to delete the Kernel32.exe file and restore it from the CD. Check the date of the virus definition file. I got the virus because the program was not updating the definition file. It was only updating the program. See my email on Virue information update on where to manually get the new definition file if your program is not updating correctly. This is a bad virus. Re: [Chevelle-List] Virus information update
Your virus software should caught the problem. If you opened the file then you sent the virus to everyone in your address book and or all messages in your inbox. The virus seems to be damaging the Kernel32.exe file. Let me know if your virus program finds the virus and infected files. The virus is W32.badtrans.B@mm. I have seriously chewed out his ass. My Norton Anti-Virus 2001 program did not catch the virus because the automatic update was not updating the virus definition file. It was only updating the program and not the virus definition file. I had to go to http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/download/pages/US-N95.html to manually get the new virus file. It found two infected files, kdll.dll and kernel32.exe. The virus starts out as Readme.mp3.scr and changes to News.doc.scr, humor.mp3.scr etc, but virus is really the W32.badtrans.B@mm virus. I did not start the virus, but from all the emails returns and messages from service providers about detecting a virus, it has been sent to everyone in my address book and every website I have been. Again I am sorry. If you do not open or save the file you will be OK. I would update your Virus Definition Files for whatever virus program you are using. I am seriously embarrassed about this. I work on computers and if anyone has this virus and needs help restoring these two files, please email and I will give you instruction on how to do this repair. Mike, you may have been a victim, and I sincerely hope that you did not do this intentionally. My suspicion comes from the fact that the email that I received from you was directly from your address [EMAIL PROTECTED] it did not have the underscore prefix _[EMAIL PROTECTED] as all others seem to have. Please keep in mind, I did not intend to accuse you of doing this intentionally. In the heat of my disgust, I may have done so. For that I apologize. I will continue to run traces on all of the virus files I get from all the lists I am on. Hopefully there will be a common thread to aid in finding the culprits. This is my last post on this subject. Title: Message The virus is finding the email addresses from the inbox and contact lists. The chevelle-list does not accept attachments so it *shouldn't* have come through with any mail sent from this list, it bounces the attachments out. It also bounces out about 50 spam emails a day that marketers are trying to slide in. A note however. Please do not send pictures or documents to this list. In the past week alone about 15 pictures were attempted and they end up coming into my 56K dialup - for a very long time.
