Re: [Chevelle-List]was Auto Movers ,black plates

Here in Virginia we get antique plates and no longer need to get an annual
inspection. As long as you are not driving the car more than 600 miles a
year. The plates are a one time fee and never expire. They have no way of
knowing how many miles you drive. My neighbor across the street he has
classic plates on his 72 elky SS because he drives it daily got an
inspection sticker.

RE: [Chevelle-List]was Auto Movers ,black plates

2003-01-31 Thread Richard M. Pruett
When I registered my 69 in Virginia, I questioned the lady at the DMV about
the difference between antique tags and regular tags. I don't remember
anything about the 600 mile rule. I was told:

1) Keep the vehicle within 250 miles from home.
2) One time fee ($10) for the tags and no inspections.
3) Restrict driving to and from parades, holidays, Sunday pleasure drives,
car shows, test driving and some occasional pleasure driving.

I told her it was a muscle car from the 60's and would be a pleasure to
drive anytime. She smiled and said just don't drive it to work.

So I got the antique tags and contacted my insurance co. I was told by them
that since it had those tags, and I wasn't going to be driving it that much,
they could insure it for $8,000, full coverage, for $138 a year as opposed
to about $800 a year for a daily driver!

What a deal!

Rich

Wisconsin has similar plates available. At least a couple of different
types - Collectors or Antique, maybe more. Non-expiring, one-time fee, etc.
I think they are not valid in January...certainly not a problem with most of
our cars! I did use my convertible in a Winterfest parade one time, and had
no problems with anybody. And once a plate is issued, the number is mine and
I can put other cars on the same number series, but with a new plate with a
suffix of B, C, or something. And that fee is cheaper than the original.
A good deal for those fortunate to have more than one 'investment' car. I
haven't checked into that second registration yet, but will when 'my wife's'
'66 SS hardtop is done!

My 69 has antique and/or classic plates, same thing here.

Here is the dealio in Washington State:

Operating Restrictions for an antique vehicle -

 * Capable of operating on the highway
 * Driving to and from -
 Auto Shows
 Circuses
 Parades
 Displays
 Special Excursions (Sunday drives)
 Antique car club meetings
 * Driven for testing purposes
 * Driving others for pleasure w/o compensation
 * The plates can't be used on replica vehicles
 * The vehicle can't be used for commercial purposes or to carry a load
 * The vehicle can't be used like a regularly licensed vehicle entitling
the antique vehicle to full use of the highway

I have never run into a problem with the troopers around here. Their
regulations are very loose as you can see. At any time I can be taking
a special excursion, testing something, or driving others for pleasure.
I can always say that I am testing my rally gauges that don't work.

This is a state regulated thing though so every state is different. For
example, I paid 100 bucks and I never have to pay another dime. The
insurance company does limit me to 5000 miles a year.

Hey you can get Antique plates, they are now $65.00 for 5 yrs ;)
No sticker needed, your not supposed to drive them everyday though.
