Better not tell all the people who have been doing it for years, nay
decades.

Jeff - spend a bit of time figuring out how the track arming works. you
can arm only the video track and play about with that while the audio
stays the same. That way you can just play out the A roll with the
interviewee while you drop in bits of the B roll. In general you don't
want to cut from B to A exactly on questions, because it just looks
shit. Instead, you should cut back to the interviewer occasionally
(noddy shots), cut during the question or if it's a short question leave
the shot on the interviewee. Play with it and see what works for you,
but don't forget to watch a lot - a *lot* - of interviews to see how
they work!

I found it's easiest if you've got the audio from both mikes on one
camera but if you didn't shoot that way, don't worry about it. If
you're using a single camera, try and find a reference point for the
interviewee's eyeline - that way you can shoot the noddy shots with
another member of the crew or a lighting stand with a bit of tape or
something standing in for your interviewee.

Re: [CinCVS] Still Pictures not exactly in the manual

2007-06-05 Thread Randolph

My version of Cinelerra does not recognise .jpg and .png extentions for some
reason. For still images, it only recognises .ifo and one other. I have
attempted loading .jpg and .png stills as all files, but they fail to load.
The extension renaming method for .png seems to work fine for Cinelerra, so I
really have nothing to complain about. I just thought I'd mention this because
the manual is not specific. It's possible that the Cinelerra that I'm using is
just plain screwy.

Why are you renaming any kind of still image file to .ifo? That extension
is for DVD metadata; I would strongly suggest that you leave your .jpg
files named .jpg and your .png files named .png.

[CinCVS] most of the php files are all static!

2007-06-05 Thread Pierre Marc Dumuid

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone know's why (a number of) the php files are all
static at the website?

Some time ago I moved the html files to php files, and moved the
sidemenu index to a single php file that was included (so editing of the
side menu only needed to be performed once.) For some reason this has
been undone?

FIXED.

I am still not on the mailing list (soo please reply to my address, not
the list address) but I browse archives from time to time and noticed
this message. I just logged onto skolelinux, and found that the php
file that I spent a little while writing has been overwritten with
static content!

Luckily, at one stage I had gitified that directory so have managed to
restore it.

j6t: BTW: the git binaries in ~j6t/bin/ aren't working anymore, I had to
scp the .git dir home to extract the file... if you recompile, I'd be
most appreciative..

[CinCVS] Re: A better MPEG-2 encoding than HDV

2007-06-05 Thread Terje J. Hanssen
Unavoidable a typo, corrected 2) [EMAIL PROTECTED] below to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I'm in touch with a fabricator planning an Anolog to MPEG-2/1394 unit
supporting also Linux. I've suggested to also include a HDMI IN on this
unit, making it even more useable.
When Sony V1/FX7 is operating, the EIP generates uncompressed 1440x1080i
with a color 4:2:2 color space. Digital 4:2:2 data are output via HDMI
port while 4:2:2 analog is output via component out.

Therefore I've suggested for this fabricator which isn't limited to
25Mbps datarate on DV tapes (DV25 or 1080i HDV) to preferably also make
use of a higher bitrate over 1394 and a better MPEG-2 encoding.

HDV applies the [EMAIL PROTECTED] profile, 1440x1080 or 1280x720 resolution,
4:2:0
color sampling and 25Mbps (out of max 60 Mbps defined) bitrate.

1) The better MPEG-2 profile for possibly HDMI IN I think of is
[EMAIL PROTECTED], the same 1440x1080 or 1280x720 resolution, and better 4:2:2
color sampling. Here is also Sony's XDCAM HD 4:2:2 with datarate 50
Mbps (out of max 80 Mbps defined).

2) A better MPEG-2 profile for Analog IN I think of is [EMAIL PROTECTED] with
720x480 or 720x576 resolution at 30fps/25fps, 4:2:2 color sampling at up
to 50Mbps (i.e Sony IMX using I-frame only)

Can Cinelerra use the MPEG-2 formats 1) and 2) above?
Which formats does Cinelerra really support?

Other viewpoints and suggestions?

If each video track has its own synced audio track(s) and it's an
interview, you could probably just arm both the audio and video tracks,
and assemble your interview by cutting and pasting chunks from the
appropriate audio along with the video, instead of trying to sync the two
video tracks to each other and cut between them. You could even apply a
fast crossfade as the default audio transition to smooth out any clicks
created by the audio cutting. Syncing between the two video tracks is
only necessary if you really need to avoid cutting the audio.

If you are absolutely frame synced with the audio. Just align them, and
make make tracks transparent on keyframes. Now you say you are not, and
you are @#$(&@#. Is the audio of the interviewee and interviewer
serperate? Then just make hard cuts: [question][answer] and add them on
one track, maybe two so you can make a nice face nods etc. ;)

[CinCVS] Two camera editing method - howto

2007-06-05 Thread Jeff Gerritsen
I have a two camera interview I'm trying to edit, one camera always on the
interviewer and one camera always on the interviewee. I want to edit both
files into one file where the interviewee says something, then cut to the
interviewer, then back to the interviewee when he says something, etc, etc...

What is the best method to perform this in cinelerra?

For example, I have tried placing both video and audio tracks on the timeline
(six tracks in total). The top video track is the interviewee with related
audio tracks. On the bottom is the interviewers video and audio tracks. I
use the audio tracks to align the timeline for sync purposes. When played
in the compositor window, timing between video and audio is way off and
within a few minuets of playing editing becomes impossible.

Any suggestions?

[CinCVS] Still Pictures not exactly in the manual

2007-06-05 Thread Randolph
I know the cinelerra manual speaks of using still pictures. The thing
is - I've learned that I can't use any old picture; it has to be from a
.png file. When I try renaming the extension from a .jpg file to .ifo,
then I try loading that file, cinelerra completely crashes - I mean
dissappears along with any work if I didn't save it. When I rename the
.png extension to .ifo, everything is fine. Then I can load, drag and
drop all I want. The manual mentions nothing of this.

[CinCVS] ANNOUNCE: anonymous pushable git repository for cinelerra

2007-06-05 Thread Christian Thaeter
It happens sometimes that people send new patches/bufixes to this ML
which eventually might get forgotten. To offer a chance that such things
are picked easily up somewhere. I created a 'mob' repository on my
server where anyone can push patches anonymously.

Little HowTo:
# first clone the repository
# (use the --reference option when you already have any other
# git clone of a cinelerra repo)
git clone git://git.pipapo.org/cinelerra/mob my_cinelerra
cd my_cinelerra

# then create a branch for your work
git checkout -b yourbranchname

# work and commit
..hack..hack..hack
git commit ...

# send it to my server, maybe with some branch description,
# see the git-push manpage
git push --all

IMPORTANT:
Do not trust the code in this repository, anyone could add potentially
dangerous code, review every foreign commit before run anything
(autogen.sh, ./configure).

I'd suggest to use gpg signed tags when you reviewd some state and trust
it (man gpg-tag). Such tags then sign the state and all its history.

Further I don't make any rules how this might be used, feel free to
acknowledge with other people to make this repository useful. The only
thing I will do is regulary or automatically rebasing the master branch
on the ongoing SVN synced repository, I'll tag the tree before doing so,
but any conflicts occuring during this rebase will be thrown out of the
master branch (they are still reachable from the tag) but contributors
would need to resolve conflicts and reapply them on the master branch
again if they didn't worked in topic branches.

If you have any questions about this, feel free to contact me via mail
or on IRC.
