Re: ATM svc?

2000-06-17 Thread Joe Martin

ATM SVCs are used for many things. LANE uses them. You can map IP
addresses to NSAP addresses and have SVCs do the call setup. CLIP uses SVCs
also. There are even SPVCs that are hard coded PVCs on the edge, but use
SVCs in the middle to allow for routing around failures. This is a method
used for Circuit Emulation under ATM.

Re: voip problem in link

2000-06-17 Thread Joe Martin

The garbage you talking about is probably an issue with the default codec.
They use G.729, but some of the routers use the PRE-IETF spec and some the
full IETF spec. On the router that supports the full IETF, add the
following: codec g729r8 pre-ietf, and all will begin to work.

Re: SLARP (Serial Line Address Resulation Protocol)

2000-06-17 Thread John Swartz

SLARP - Serial Line Address Resolution Protocol.

SLARP is most commonly used with auto-install.
Please note: the documentation and how it actually behaves, seems quite
different.

1. A router without a configuration boots
2. Router determines the is no config, and attempts to enable all
interfaces.
3. Attempts to find an IP addresss
A. On LAN interfaces it sends a BOOTP request
B. On Serial Interface it sends out a SLARP Request

A SLARP request is asking for the IP address of the device on the other end
of a point-to-point link.
The other device replies with it's own IP address.
The Appendix of the ICRC books states:
"The device will take the first available IP address on the subnet."
In reality, it seems to work best if you have the IP address at the other
end of .1 or .2
If the existing device is .1, the new router with choose .2 and visa versa.

4. Auto-install continues find network-confg file, determine router
name, find routername-confg file, etc...

Re: Cisco Documentation CD

2000-06-17 Thread Bharat Suneja

I think it sucks big time. why couldn't they make a better documentation
CD ? Does it make any sense for a company like Cisco to stick to a dying
platform like Netscape ? That browser has so many incompatiblities with
standards, it's hard to believe!! And this was true even before the AOL
acquisition.

I tried the latest documentation CD - I think I have March 2000. The CD says
I can set it up to use it with IE! However, after installation, it craps
out!

I can't even open simple HTML docs on the documentation CD (on Windows
2000) - all I get is garbled text!! Now, isn't HTML supposed to be read
equally well by all browsers ???

Please help Cisco!! A lot of us are now using Windows 2000 (it works great
on laptops, btw!! Much better than any other OS I've ever used!!), and
probably the majority of us use IE now! Don't shut us out of the
Documentation CD please!!

Re: Questions from a new CCNA (repost)

You're too new to complain about the group. You're only allowed to complain
after you get your CCIE!!!

I jumped straight from a CCNA to a CCIE. Although, I didnt study for my
CCNA AT ALL and Ive been in the business for 7+ years. It depends on your
experience level. If you've been doing WAN/networking for a long time, go
ahead, jump straight to the CCIE. If not, build a better foundation and get
your CCNP first.

I pass the exam with 8xx score. For simple question is good enough, but
hardest question(truly hard not include any reading material) not cover in
Boson test. Lammle book miss out a lot of wan protcol material. For my
recommendation, you read Lammle Book and ICRC book. By using your clear
mind clear CCNA test.

CCNP1 vs 2 Questions, (was Re: CCNP 2.0 objectives!! U asked for them!)

2000-06-17 Thread Venkat

Hello,

"Also I have it on good authority (rumor) that the CCNPs version 1 will
have
to recert prior to Jan 01 to maintain their cert"
--
1) Does anybody know exactly what is the process for "re-certification"?

2) Do we need to take the regular 50x CCNP2 exam OR will there be
separate
e-Certification Exams?

3) I am a CCNA/CCDA now studying for CCNP, if I have to take the Regular
CCNP2(50x) Exams to maintain Qualification, may be it is better to just
go for
the 50x exams now, right?

4) Also, Can I take the ACRC, and CLSC before July 31, and take the
BCRAN, and
CIT2 after July 31 and still be CCNP1, or do you lose all chance of
becoming
CCNP1.0 after July 31?

If anybody has more info on the RE-Certification Process along with any
suggestions, please let us know.

Sincerely,
Venkat
