Re: Damn, I can't get this to work, please help!! [7:8797]

2001-06-17 Thread sagae mitz

I have a same suggestion as Daniel =)
After you create subinterfaces per vlan on the C2600 fastEthernet interface,
you must issue the encapsulatin command before you actually assign the IP
address.

In my case, that was not the problem. I was doing InterVlan Routing between
C2600 (with fa interface mod on it) and Cat5505 w/o RSM. After setting
everything right on Catalyst side, I created the subinterfaces on fa1/0.
The problem is that C2600 did not perform any InterVlan routing. I changed
the encap type to dot1q, and suddently it worked. Very strange Any idea
anybody???

Thanks

ISTR that they're not, according to cisco itself. Search the archives
for "adaptive" if you want more details. It was discussed before.

Re: Teltone ILS-1000 OR 2000?? [7:8866]

2001-06-17 Thread JC

Hello,

Since I've had dialog with you offline I thought I would fill you in on the
difference. The ILS-1000 is the demonstrator model and it only offers the U
interface. All 2500 series routers have S/T type BRI interface, so if you
were to use the cheaper ILS-1000 series you would have to buy an NT1
adapter. However, if you buy the ILS-2000 you get both U and S/T interface
support so there is no additional hardware requirements, just plug your
RJ-45 in the S/T connector on the ILS-2000 and then plug the RJ-45 on the
other end to your S/T type connector on your router. Hope this helps.

Thanks,

I might be wrong, I think the demonstrator may be a different version all
together. It looks as though the ILS-1000 also has both U and S/T support,
it must be the outdated version as suggested in a previous post in this
thread.

RE: BGP on BSCN? [7:8810]

2001-06-17 Thread Howard C. Berkowitz

>I would say that less than 7% was devoted to BGP when I took it. Halabi's
>book is excellent and if memory serves me correctly our own Mr.Howard
>Berkowitz was going to be writing a new BGP book, Howard is that still in
>the works?

Yes, with somewhat different focus than Halabi -- the working title
is "Building IP Service Provider Networks." As you might suspect, it
begins with the "What Problem are you trying to solve?" In many
respects, it's the mirror image of my last book, the "WAN Survival
Guide." WAN Survival Guide focuses on the choices the enterprise has
in the WAN, including multihoming, VPNs, and developing their SLA.
The new book deals with how the provider responds to these customer
requirements, and how it builds its infrastructure.

While there may be configuration snippets (which will include Juniper
as well as Cisco, and possibly others), it's not a how-to-configure
book. It's how-to-design and how-to-operate. For example, I will
spend much more time on the applications of communities (including
extended communities) than community commands.

Completion is scheduled for November, but it's flowing pretty quickly
and I hope to have it done before then. It would be nice if it could
be out late this year, but early 2002 is more likely.

Incidentally, I was just part of a panel on Internet routing system
scalability at the Internet Society INET meeting in Stockholm. Since
there has been confusion about the ISOC site, Sue Hares of Nexthop
put them on her site at www.nexthop.com. Nexthop makes the
commercial version of GateD.

You might get some insight from another document,
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-berkowitz-bgpcon-01.txt
on single-router BGP convergence. That version has coauthors from
Nortel (me), Cisco (Alvaro Retana), and NextHop (Sue Hares and Padma
Krishnaswamy). It's becoming a standards track document in the
Benchmarking Methodology Working Group, and will split into two
documents, one on terminology and one on the basic test. The new
versions will also have a Juniper coauthor (Marianne Lepp), so the
procedures should represent a pretty good consensus.

Re: Push Function in RFC 793 [7:8756]

2001-06-17 Thread Howard C. Berkowitz

Remember that TCP only understands a byte stream, not the structure
of application records within it. Brian is correct about one
application for interactive traffic.

Another might be if you had, let's say, 2000 byte application
records, but the window size had worked its way up to 64 K. You
might not want to wait for the window to fill before a given record
was sent, so you might push it. Doing so does not optimize
throughput, but would improve application latency. Everything is a
tradeoff.

Ken,
Install the CD as you would normally do. Then copy the documentation CD to
your hard disk. Edit the search.ini file and change the following two lines
to point to wherever you copied the documentation CD.

Example:

InitialURL=/c:/program files/cisco/cd_data/home/home.htm

SourceDrive=c:/program files/cisco/cd_data/

Couple of items:

CEF is a very low overhead process and, in terms of
CPU and memory, you should be fine. I am not as
certain that your intentions to use the MAC address of
the router as a filter point will work. Typically you
use an IP extended ACL for CAR. Also review how
routers filter outbound traffic.

Hi
I have 3 routers running a point-to-point network.There are 2 branches and
the 3rd router is at the ISP.All the links are 64K and I am using static
routes.I can telnet into and ping all 3 routers both serial and ethernet
interfaces , but I cannot see the WINS and DNS servers at the ISP. I have
put a static route on the fastethernet interface at the ISP router 0.0.0.0
0.0.0.0 fast 0 and the same route on the serial interface at the second
branch which connects at to the ISP router 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 serial 1. B

But after that I still cannot see those 2 servers from branch1 and 2.If I do
a show arp on the ISP router I can see the 2 servers and ping them from that
router, but not from the other 2.

How is BCMSN ? [7:8900]

2001-06-17 Thread boysnake

Hi.

I'm planing to take BCMSN and wonder if it has many comand line questions, I
don't hav access to a 5000 switch so the "set" command can be difficult.

I use the Cisco and Cybex books.

Thanks

Re: Static Routing [7:8896]

2001-06-17 Thread Gareth Hinton

Can you do an extended ping from the ethernet interface of your branch
routers to the ISP router? (ie Does the ISP router know how to get back to
your local LAN's.)
The only ping you've mentioned that does work is from your branch router to
the ISP ethernet. As far as the ISP router is concerned this only involves
directly connected subnets. What routes are there on the ISP router?
Your next step after that is to confirm the connectivity from the ISP router
to the Servers and back. Can the servers get back to your branch subnets:

Do the servers use your ISP router as default gateway?
If not, does their default gateway know how to get to your branch subnets?

Depends on your IP addressing scheme as to whether it matters, but not
having 'IP classless' in the config can mess things up.

Something to start with anyway.

Gaz

Phil,

URL for IP Mobility RFC. I believe there are plenty of other RFC's for the

Don't know whether this is your cause, but it's an interesting read anyway.
Anybody used it/using it/know about it?

Thanks Circusnuts. Problem solved. The interface connection was wrong
between the routers.

By the way can someone clarify on this one - Is it wrong to connect Serial 0
of Router A to Serial 1 of Router B. I did come across this problem while
playing on my home lab with rip configuration.

My antivirus software just detected a virus contained within an attachment

delete e-mail rather than quarantine so I can't tell the source.
Virus was the w32.badtrans.etc as below.

Re: Complete Redundancy [7:8409]

2001-06-17 Thread Bradley J. Wilson

Right now I'm dealing with a situation in which my company has two redundant
frame relay links to Botany Australia. One through Sprint, and the other
through AT&T. We were experiencing really bad latency on the AT&T link (up
to 1.2 seconds), so I moved all the traffic over to the Sprint link once it
was installed. No change, though, in the latency. I used Concord Net
Health to measure the latency, and it was *exactly* the same over both the
AT&T link and the Sprint link - they spiked at the exact same times, and to
the same degree. They must be going over the same satellite link or
whatever, but *something* is amiss here

The world is a single point of failure. :->

Seriously, something often overlooked - the ISP's themselves, their
backbones, their peering.

Not too long ago, up in the Sacramento area, some folks found out the hard
way that even though they were dual homed, both ISP's used the same backbone
provider. When that provider had a failure, both ISP's were down ( along
with several others in the area, all of whom used this same Tier 1 as their
backbone )

If the customer really does require "absolute complete redundancy" then you
and they should be doing a lot of research.

I have a client who needs "absolute" complete redundancy for their Internet
service.

I assume they should be using 2 separate links with different ISPs. What I
don't have hands-on experience with is the physical connections and HSRP.

Will I connect both routers to the local switch and then configure HSRP
between them?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

RE: frame relay Down [7:8648]

2001-06-17 Thread Christopher D. Buzby

Unfortunately I never had access to the equipment to place a loop-plug in
it, The Telco ended up dispatching and testing to the Smart jack clean,
they ordered the replacement module and I am waiting to hear from the
customer, BTW I am almost positive that the interface does not have to be
in HDLC in order to go up up and be "testable" can anybody verify that?

Chris,

In order to see a telco provided loop towards your CPE, you will need to
change your encap. to HDLC. I don't think Frame-Relay enap has the
capability to see loops. Also, try a 'sho cont serial 0/1'. Look for the
various alarms on the card; AIS, LOS, etc.

And make sure that your local loopback passes as well. change the encap to
hdlc, number your int, and enable 'loopback local'.

Your interface should be up,up (looped) and you can then run a extended ping
to your interface. That should at least prove connectivity between your csu
and interface. 'no loop local' will drop the loop. Then ask AT&T to put a
loop up towards your site again.

Check with your service provider and see how they have this connection

I have passed Switching 2.0 last month, without practicing the commands.

There are few command questions in the test (5 - 10), and they are for the
most enough simple. Most are type in command questions.

Just memorize the commands, it should be sufficient.

couldn't believe how poorly worded some of the questions on this test
were. I mean, do the cisco guys review these questions and try to
answer them? Not only were old technologies (SNA, TR) tested heavily
but I found on some questions it wasn't the point of picking the
correct answer, but more like picking the answer that's the least
wrong. Just a tidbit for you guys studying. Take care.

Onto ccie written for me. Tons of reading ahead.

Tim

RE: IP Phones [7:8898]

2001-06-17 Thread Tim Medley

You could use a 12sp+ or a VIP30. These are a couple of the origional
Cisco IP Phones that Cisco aquired from Selsius.

You would still need a Call Manager to actually use the Ip Phones. They
cannot just talk to each other.

You're best bet for the CIPT and CVoice tests are to take the actual
cisco courses.

In my experience both the CVoice and CIPT exams really actual hands on
experience.
You could get away with studying the Course notes and CCO. Cisco Press
just released a hardbound edition of the CVoice class material and there
is a similar book being released in August for the CIPT.

If your interested I may still have a couple of Cisco 12sp+ IP Phones
collecting dust that i'd sell off.

I am looking to pass the Cisco IP Telephony and the CVOICE exams. I
would like to get a hold of some cheap IP Phone for IP Telephony. Does
anyone know where I can get them. I am not interested in quality, just
something to test and study with. Thanks.

People,

STOP sending me email requesting for Olive code. I have the code but I
am NOT going

to give it out to anyone. Doing so would be against the law. If you
don't have Olive, too

bad but I can NOT help you.

If you do a search on a security related site you can find a tool to
dump the SAM database in NT and then you will be able to "retrieve"
the administrator password.

I would say contact the administrator and ask them for their password.

Bridging: "no ip routing" and "no bridge xx route ip" [7:8917]

2001-06-17 Thread Jerry Seven

Hi All,

I have a question on "no bridge xx route ip" command, what I want is to
disable IP routing inside the bridge group, but I found after I use this
command, router still routes the IP packets.

My configuration is as follows:

 .2172.10.37.0/24.1.1172.10.36.0/24 .2
R7 R3 R6

The configuration on R7 and R6 as usual, no bridge group is configured on
them, on R3, I have(stripped):

bridge irb
!
interface GigabitEthernet1/0/0
 ip address 172.10.37.1 255.255.255.0
 no ip route-cache distributed
 no ip mroute-cache
 load-interval 30
 negotiation auto
 bridge-group 1
!
interface FastEthernet2/0/0
 ip address 172.10.36.1 255.255.255.0
 no ip route-cache distributed
 no ip mroute-cache
 half-duplex
 bridge-group 1
!
bridge 1 protocol ieee

But on R7 I still could ping 172.10.36.2, after I use "no ip routing", then
it
failed, so my question what is the relationship between "no bridge xx route
ip" and "no ip routing", why after I run the first command, ip routing is
still enabled in the bridge group?

Thanks,
Jerry
