Stupid Question time [7:41465]

2002-04-14 Thread Kris Keen

All, im studying for my CCIE. Can someone point me in the direction of
information about RIF's..I've got the Rossi Paper but its unclear at the
start.

Am I right in saying, a RIF is a Routing Information Field, its used to
determine the list of rings and bridges a frame has travelled through a
token ring network?
The RIF field is the first byte of the Source Mac address?

Foggy topic!

Use the show line command to find out what the line number is and you can
set the flow control for the line in the line configuration.

conf t
line xxx<--- line number
flowcontrol software|hardware|none

software for xon/xoff
hardware for cts/rts
none for well none =P

RE: 100Mbit cable can't shorter than 6 feets????? [7:41448]

2002-04-14 Thread Ouellette, Tim

Chee,

I've never heard of anything like that. YOu do have to be carefull with
fiber though. I've got 10baset cables that are less than a foot and
100baset cables that are 10. I think there is a restriction (51.2 bittimes)
for fast ethernet on the long end but nothing stated as to how short it can
be.

Re: CCIE Written Beta Announcement [7:41340]

2002-04-14 Thread Michael L. Williams

I appreciate the info. I'm eager to see this new beta. But as you know
tomorrow is the 15th, and I'm shocked to see nothing on Cisco's website
about it, as usually Cisco is very forthcoming with information about beta
exams, what they cover, when they start/stop, etc.

I'll call Prometric tomorrow to see if I can schedule and keep my eyes on
Cisco's website for more info.

Thanks!
Mike W.

PS: I'm surprised the cost isn't $150 (1/2 of the normal $300). Perhaps
they just price all betas at $50 and I just assumed $50 was 1/2 price of
$100 (for CCNP exams before they went to $125)

Re: 100Mbit cable can't shorter than 6 feets????? [7:41448]

2002-04-14 Thread Michael L. Williams

I checked the web, and saw some places that say a minimum of .5M (1.5Ft),
but I also ran into another place that says 2M (~6Ft). I know that we have
and do commonly use 3Ft patch cables for 100Mbps ethernet and it works fine,
so between the two, I'd say that 1.5Ft could indeed be a minimum. However,
I believe that in the olden days, the minimum distance between stations on
10Base-2 was something like 6Ft, but modern ethernet uses a different
electrical technology that 10Base-2.

Here's an URL talking about this topic:

Hi there,

I've just done 503, and now ready for the next one. I've got the budget of

Could any please tell me which course I should go to? Remote, switch, or

Thanks,

BGP route info Question [7:41454]

2002-04-14 Thread Hunt Lee

Ok, now I'm even more confused:-

When I do a show ip bgp summary, it clearly shows that my AS is 7496 (I've
confirmed this with show run). Also, my only EBGP neighbor is from AS 1221
(all the others are IBBP neighbors), which does not match any of the values
in 3840 703 2764 4648.

It would be greatly appreciated if someone can shed some light on this.

The best place for FLASH would be Ebay. I think if you're shopping for
2500- you will find an 8 Meg stick ranges from $35 to $50. This is a
far cry from the $100 to $150 it once sold for just a few short years
ago.

As far as RAM- that's and easy one. The specs are:
16 Megs/ 72 Pin/ 60ns/ Parity

You should be able to pick up a 16 Meg stick for less than $10. I have
ordering RAM from M.C. Howard Electronics [[EMAIL PROTECTED]] for
approximately 3 years now. You'll need to know the specs when dealing
with these guys (refer to the above paragraph).

On the topic of FLASH and RAM- I have had nothing short of perfect
service from Jeff @ PC Wholesale [[EMAIL PROTECTED]]. I buy most
all my FLASH and RAM for the 2600s from him.

I have found both of these sellers so trustworthy- that I generally
E-mail them with what I need and pay them without directly (without
using Ebay).

All the best !!!
Phil

RE: 2500 won't boot...any ideas? [7:41414]

2002-04-14 Thread Edward Sohn

I've tried an 11.0 version of the IOS, but i can't remember now what was
on there before to create the startup-config...

regarding interrupting the boot process...you guys will kill me, but i
can't remember the ctrl-break option on bootup. maybe this would solve
my issue altogether? haha...i thought it was the ctrl-shift-6-x, but if
not, i've tried ctrl-c, esc, and a few others. can someone refresh my
memory? i will go ahead and try another GR IOS after i send this
email...

i'm sure it's not the ram, b/c i've tried to boot up with 2 different
ram chips (one that i know is working on another box), and it still does
the same thing...

funny thing you mention the "read-only" status...this is probably what
got me into trouble in the first place. after seeing that, i thought to
myself "hey, someone makes non-writeable flash chips?" so, i did my
little mixing and matching of several different chips, only to find it
on other "imaged" flash chips, as well. anyway, correct me if i'm
wrong, but i believe that the "read-only" listing is because the flash
has an image in it that takes up most of the 16megs. in other words, i
saw it where i had 16megs of flash in another router, and the bootup
listed the first 8megs as "read only" and the 2nd 8megs as "read/write".
and that router was running version 10.x or something like that. so
this led me to believe that only the space taken up makes the flash
list as "read only" or "read/write", accordingly. i put this to the
test by loading a fresh 16MB flash in a router, and sure enough, it
listed as "read/write". after i loaded a 12.x image, it listed as "read
only." anyway, i hope i wasn't too confusing on that explanation...

thanks for all the help, everyone. i'm going to try another image, and
i'll post my results...

Ed- I'm trying to make sense of the output and your trouble shooting
steps, as explained in your E-mail. If the 2511 did not have 11.0(10c)
ROMs, then the router would more or less hang-up when upgraded beyond
11.3 or 12.0 (I don't remember the cutoff for the 10.0 ROMs).

If the router seems to be choking with the use of 12.2, issue the Cntrl
BREAK upon bootup and reload an older IOS (say 12.0 or 12.1) to rule out
some sort of bug. Though I have not had issues with 12.2 in my 2500s,
this code is not a GR (General Release) and most definitely could be
reacting with the FLASH and RAM "manufacturer" combination that have
going on in your 2511.

There is also a slim chance you have zapped the RAM (rare but true).

Anywho- I "believe" what you are showing us here is an issue where the
memory works fine in the 2522. The "Read Only" seems a little weird
(after the 16 Megs FLASH), but then again... certain versions of code
read this way and in the upgrade process automatically call for a
software reload that enables the "Read Only" to change upon coming back
up.

If I've missed the boat, please offer more info. For better or worse, I
have probably upgraded no less than a 100 2500s and 3000s (Y2K) in the
few short years I have been working on Cisco.

All the best !!!
Phil

my 2511 was working fine a few days ago with--i believe--11.0xx
software. i created a configuration and saved it. yesterday, i
upgraded the RAM so that i could load 12.2xx.

the router won't fully boot up, and it never goes into the config or
into rommon. i don't get it. again, it was working a few days ago.
unfortunately, i can't put the old chips back in b/c i overwrote them
already--ugh. i loaded up 12.2.7 onto the flash via another router and
tried to boot it up again in the 2522...

here's the output from when i start up the router, to where it hangs...

RE: network security [7:41440]

2002-04-14 Thread Michael Williams

IHMO, both points you made aren't really applicable to what you're asking.

You're asking if you should use CiscoSecure on NT for AAA, and I'd say fine,
go for it. Here's why I discount what your friend said:

1) Security holes, security schmoles. You're not wanting to use NT as a
firewall or WWW/FTP server in the DMZ, and the fact is, you should have a
firewall that's NATing (or at least a router that's NATing) you to any
outside network (internet or other company's private network), so the only
security threats would be from internal sources (not to discount that, but
again it's not like every hacker wannabe from the internet will have access
to this box). If you want, you can even put an access list on the router
that would be this boxes gateway and restrict traffic going to this box to
only TACACS. BAM! Done!

2) NT4/2000 are as stable as it needs to be for doing AAA. I mean, we're
not talking about a server that's going to be doing many complex things at
once (WWW/DNS, CGI-BIN, scripts, etc). It will run ONE thing, CiscoSecure.
Stability shouldn't be a problem. And the fact is, for (way) under $1,000
you can setup a second server running CiscoSecure, then in your TACACS setup
on the devices, simply point to both servers in case one fails. Again,
BAM! Done!

My 2 cents =)

Mike W.

I would like to second the question "Is this official"? I can't find any

IMHO, I would speculate that the price would be 50% ($150) which is what all
of the CCNP beta exams I took were (after going up from the lovely price of
$0)

network security [7:41440]

2002-04-14 Thread supernet

Hi Dear Friends,

My company is considering using CiscoSecure to do AAA and we are not
sure which one we should use, Windows or UNIX. I have the following
questions, please help me to clarify:

1. My friend told me Windows has a lot of security holes. My question is
if Windows is only using TCP/IP, it only has IP based security holes,
like SNMP vulnerability. But UNIX is also IP based, it also has this
kind of security holes, right? So if I put all the security patches from
Microsoft, this shouldn't be a problem. Is this statement valid?

2. My friend also told me that Windows is easier to crash. I knew NT 4
is not stable, but as far as I know, 2000 and XP are pretty stable. The
problem is if we have to hire a UNIX guy, it costs more than an NT guy,
right? So what other advantages UNIX buy me?

We definitely don't want to use any free AAA server since we couldn't
get any vendor support.

Thank you very much.

Yoshi

Issue a break and stop the bootup sequence. Go into rommon mode and change
the config-reg to 0x142. Reload and erase your config (WR E) when it goes

RE: WINS replication problem across PPP network [7:41410]

2002-04-14 Thread Mayo, Simer

I had already tested all the configs (with WINS server and other) earlier
but it didn't worked out.

Resolution:
I had on the following entry on e0/0 on Network 1 router:
no ip directed-broadcast
Once i enabled it, it started working.

Thanks again for your help. I did learned few more troubleshooting tips.

wins is a directed tcp connection. wins dosent need ip helper address. most
likely his wins is incorrectly configured.

he should have a push (and or pull) relation defined in wins manager between
the two servers.

I didnt get what he said about adding the ports. maybe his access lists are
killing wins replication.

I'm sure someone can provide a more detailed and accurate answer, but
hopefully I can help.

WINS is a TCP and UDP protocol. I imagine an IP HELPER-ADDRESS command might
be of use here. Try a search for WINS on CCO at www.cisco.com.

RE: Cisco Memory [7:41266]

2002-04-14 Thread Circusnuts_1999

E-mail them with what I need and pay them without directly (without
using Ebay).

All the best !!!

Another way to look at collapsed backbones is to consider why it's called
"collapsed".
Cisco uses a hierarchical campus model that scales down to small one-room
networks and
up to enterprise-wide networks that include multiple buildings. The full
model has
three "tiers" or "layers" (access, distribution, core) and multiple types of
building
blocks (switch block, core block, server block, mainframe block, WAN block).
I don't
have statistics but I've seen a lot more collapsed networks than networks
that fit the
full 3-tiered multi-block multi-building campus model.

The collapsed model is very popular and can scale up to hundreds of
endsystems and
dozens of workgroups (VLANs). All you need is a high-end switch, gigabit
cabling
(preferably fiber but cat 5e/6 works just fine if you keep the cable lengths
in the 90m
range and if you don't have EMI to worry about), and a high-end router to
serve as a
firewall and gateway to the outside. Some of the endsystems can be home-run
directly
back to the main switch, or they can be aggregated at active or passive
consolidation
points. The router can be a standalone or can be included in the same
chassis as the
main switch such as a "route service module" or "layer 3 services module".

RE: 2500 won't boot...any ideas? [7:41414]

2002-04-14 Thread Circusnuts_1999

RE: Collapsed Backbone [7:41418]

2002-04-14 Thread Howard C. Berkowitz

First, I wonder who comes up with these terms? Collapsed backbone
sounds like something that needs the immediate attention of an
orthopedist or chiropractor, while "router on a stick" sounds like
something from the Autobiography of Vlad the Impaler.

First key point. The backbone or core device is defined by topology
rather than product line. That point being made, it is true that
Cisco does position products for access, distribution, and core
applications generally based on the requirements of large
enterprises. But a core switch could be quite slow and small, if
everything else in the network is small and slow, yet still be a
reasonable design approach.

>single point for monitoring and controlling the network%.

Second point: as defined, it's also a single point of failure. With
a campus network large enough to justify a gigabit switch in a core,
this is a bad idea. It's usually better to plan on at least two
physical switches that normally loadshare (e.g., switch 1 is the
primary for odd-numbered VLANs and switch 2 is the primary for
even-numbered), but either can take over the entire load.

Re: CCIE Written Reading.. [7:41017]

2002-04-14 Thread Kevin Cullimore

I'm a little frightened at the equation of expressing corporate values with
managerial authority. If the organization is subject to such catastrophic
change due to personal whims or poorly-planned reactions to clearly
discernible macroecenomic trends, I'm not sure their issues and/or plight
are worth your attention/ire.

The higher up someone resides within a corporate structure, the more
valuable their "networking" (meant to invoke the non-technical use of the
term) skills are likely to be.

On balance, I'd MUCH PREFER the scenario in which managers participate in
newsgroups to exploit the interaction potential and make good use of their
time rather than the situation you depict. In this case, I suspect we're
dealing with an individual not neccessarily associated with the management
hierarchy who merely manages their time well enough to accomodate these
online conversations.

On a technical note, if more people paid attention to the free HT upgrade or
sought out an acceptable alternative, helpdesks would either find themselves
free to work on more interesting problems or pare themselves down to the
margin that you and your compatriots scream out for.

They show up on eBay quite regularly.

RE: WINS replication problem across PPP network [7:41410]

2002-04-14 Thread Joseph Brunner

wins is a directed tcp connection. wins dosent need ip helper address. most
likely his wins is incorrectly configured.

he should have a push (and or pull) relation defined in wins manager between
the two servers.

I didnt get what he said about adding the ports. maybe his access lists are
killing wins replication.

I'm sure someone can provide a more detailed and accurate answer, but
hopefully I can help.

WINS is a TCP and UDP protocol. I imagine an IP HELPER-ADDRESS command might
be of use here. Try a search for WINS on CCO at www.cisco.com.

Sean

Subject: WINS replication problem across PPP network [7:41410]

I'm having problem with WINS replication to 2 differ servers
Server 1 in Network 1 in Phx (PDC...WINS Server)
Server 2 in Network 2 in LA (BDC...WINS Server)

server1.cisco2600---PPP---cisco2600.server2

The server2 can browse all machines in network 1 and 2 but server 1 cant see
network 2.

I have enabled the TCP ports 42 and 135 on both the routers but still no
success.

The network is NT 4 domain.

Thanks in advance for help

Simer
