Tonight's Homily - Studying, Writing, and Teamwork [7:51886]

2002-08-22 Thread Chuck's Long Road

Slightly different points for tonight's closing thoughts.

I'm hard at work writing a study guide for one of those places that sells
certification training materials. As I work, I find myself thinking about
all those training materials, all those study guides, all those books out
there. As critical as I have been about many of them, I have to take my hat
off to those who have actually written white papers, study guides, books.
Now that the pen is in the other hand, so to speak, I find I have to admire
those folks. It's hard work to write study guides. It's hard work to write
responses to RFP's and customer project proposals. It's hard work to write
even bad books and papers, let alone good ones.

It is an interesting form of study. I must keep returning to the equipment,
keep verifying what I am writing. As I learn new information I must validate
it, booth in the writing and on the command line. As I work, I become
familiar with the equipment. I am internalizing the commands. I am making
ready for the next trip to the Lab.

I am quite fortunate in that I am partnered with someone who is great to
work with. She questions things, chides me to clarify, pushes me to be
better, demands that I take control of this project. She is an author in her
own right, so I accept the advice, consider the words, rethink what I am
doing, rewrite or accept, based on the advice and the rethinking I am doing.
With any luck we will still get this thing out in a timely manner.

I am also quite fortunate in that I have the good example of some folks here
on this list who have written good work, and whose advice is timeless. I
think it was Kent Hundley who said in his excellent book Cisco Access Lists
Field Guide that writing is a team effort. I am now learning that first
hand. I believe it was Priscilla Oppenheimer who said that the most
important thing one can do is to re-read everything, and re-write as
necessary. I am finding first hand the truth of these statements.

So tonight's final word is a hearty and sincere congratulations to all who
have written, be they good, bad, indifferent. You have done well. I commend
you for that.

Keep plugging away, all of you seeking certifications. You can do it.

Still waters. Green valleys. A gentle breeze on a late summer day.

Goodnight.

RE: Traceroute IP displays twice (previous post by [7:51823]

2002-08-22 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hello

If R1 send a frame with the DE bit set and router acting as frame-relay
switch is really working as a switch frame-relay, it only changes the dlci
number ( if needed ) and forward the frame to the output interface, it must
keep DE, BECN and FECN bit as arrived, in this case the frame going out from
the switch must have the DE bit set. If, as I'm afraid, router acting as
frame-relay switch in not working as switch, it must read the packet at
level three and forward the packet to the output interface creating a
totally new frame without considering the original frame ( at level 2 ), so
DE bit is not set because router is not configured for that. Normally, this
type of forwarding is done using policy-routing, but don't forget that
policy-routing also decrement TTL and don't forward a packet if arrive with
TTL 1.

This must be a explanation to why you see three hops in traceroute, but if
this is true the router acting fr-switch has the same ip address that
R3..Who provide the ip addresses for the exercise? If they are invented
by you, my theory is not valid. In another case it could be a trick of the
person who created the exercise.

Finally, you can see if the frame arrived with the DE bit set with show
frame-relay pvc.

Thanks for the ideas. I did try some of those things. I didn't know that you
could tell if a device was a Frame Relay switch or router based on whether
it sets the DE bit, though? And how would I know if the frame arrived with
the DE bit set??

This was on a virtual lab. I didn't have access to the FR switch. I agree
with you that it was acting funny.

If I have time I'll go back and do some more testing, but I can't promise
that I will have time. Thank-you very much for your inteest in the problem
and your suggestions, though.

Can you put debug ip icmp in both R1 and R3 routers? or better
 debug ip
packet detail. This is for checking if R3 is really sending six

 exceeded when traceroute is executed.

Also, you can use ping with record option set instead
 traceroute to see the
 path.

I'm suspecting that frame-relay switch is not configured with
 frame-relay
switching, but this introduce several issues about ospf. Can
 you check with
show ip ospf database that you have only three routers.? Also
 you can check
if frame-relay switch router is really working as a switch
 frame-relay
sending traffic from R1 marked with DE. If this arrive to R3
 without DE mean
that frame-relay switch is really routing ip traffic instead of
 switching
frames. The same test must be done between R2 and R3

Another test should be send pings from 172.16.1.1 to
 172.16.2.2 with ttl
set to 1, 2 and 3. Debug ip packet detail in all routers must
 help you to
 identified what is wrong

Is cdp active ? If yes, can you check neighbours of R3? You
 must see only R1
and R3 is router acting as fr-switch is working properly.

Please, could you update me with result of this issue ? I'm
 very interesting
 whit it.

 Hi Mark, etc.

I never got a satisfactory explanation for my results with
 Trace Route. In
my case, a particular router was claiming to be the first hop
 and the second

two different routers are claiming to be the first hop (due to

 trying to trace
to another spoke through the hub. The trace succeeds. The
 network is
working, but what's with the router replying twice? (It happens
 if I go the

The hub router is 172.16.1.3. Why is it sending back the dest

Not to sound too harsh, but if you have problems with
dlsw+,ipx, voice, bgp and atm... then you have a big problem.
The good news is that you have identified your areas of weakness..
For dlsw+, get the book by Tam Nam Kee...for BGP make sure you read
thru Halabi's book a few times (concentrate on the last few chapters)
and of course download TrafficGen at www.nantech.com/software . As for
the atm and voice, you may have to rent time on an online lab and just
practise..remember that's cheaper than the $1250 you pay for each lab
attempt...

Well, according to RFC, TTL decrement is 1 and that's the law.

it doesn't mean some bad boys out there do things to make TTL adjustments
 possible.

I checked the obvious suspect - route-map set statements - and did not
find
anything. I quickly looked elsewhere in the global config did not reveal
anything that hit me over the head.

That said, the only place I know for sure where a TTL can be adjusted
manually is in the use of the ebgp multiphop command, which changes the
TTL
from 1 to whatever you want.

It wouldn't surprise me to learn that Microsoft or Linux routing
implementations would permit this. Microsoft because they believe they
should be able to do whatever they want, and Linux because the open source
community just likes to play with the knobs. :-

I would suggest that screwing with TTL's is not the best way to manage
things. Why would you want to, anyway?

Maybe you should wait then until after November, when they are going to drop
IPX and TR stuff... (that's what I'll do), but don't forget that DLSW+ is
still valid with Ethernet (it should be easier, though)... in the meanwhile,
practice BGP like hell... voice and atm you really should get a rack but
only after you figured it out on the books, so you won't waste your time...

By the way, once they are droping a few things next November, does anybody
knows what will replace those things by that time?

No , If you want to monitor ISIS adjacencies, use this command :

SHOW CLNS neighbor or SHOW CLNS NEIGHBOR DETAILED

The host ID is SNPA and the traffic is classified with L1L2 or L2L2.

The command may be used only in the router connected in the same ethernet of
the clns traffic than you monitor.

Cisco PIX 520 amp; Motorola Surfboard 4100 on Com [7:51884]

2002-08-22 Thread Michael Gunnels

I have been having a recurring problem in the past 2
weeks (usually daily) which is solved by power cycling
my Motorola Surfboard 4100 cable modem. I'm using a
PIX 520 firewall with the attached config.

When the problem occurs, the cable modem's LED's
appear normal. And Comcast is able to ping the cable
modem's management address, but they don't have the
skills to do further testing (and won't escalate it to
a more technical person). The ethernet side of the
cable modem appears to hang. The pix shows the
connection is still up and I have link lights, but it
stops passing traffic. When I power cycle the modem,
the problem clears instantly.

Comcast blames Motorola, Motorola blames Comcast, and
when I tell them I have a PIX, they both blame Cisco.
I don't beleive the problem to be related to my PIX,
but I figured I'd see if anyone on this list has had a
similar problem. In the meantime, I am running w/o
the PIX just to narrow down the possibilities. Please
help if you can.

Thanks,

Mike

RE: How to use SNMP to get network utilization of Fast [7:51885]

2002-08-22 Thread 416South

If i'm reading your situation correctly you should be able to poll all
information. I'm not sure if each VLAN has an assigned IP address as in
MLS. If so I believe you should be able to poll each IP segment.

 Hi all,

I just setup vlan trunk at a fastethernet port of a Cisco 7200
 router and it
running IOS 12.1. If I have 5 vlan at the fastethernet port,
 then I create 5
sub-interface at that fastethernet port. Can I use SNMP to get
 network
utilization of each sub-interface (vlan) ?

RE: MLS for 6000 series [7:51871]

2002-08-22 Thread 416South

Yes it is still L3,L4 switching as long as you have the MSFC you will have
no problem. You have to enable MLS on the Sup Engine as well to have this
work.

Hey folks, 6000 and 6500 switches are IOS based and do MLS,
right? Cisco's website says so, but they they say something
confusing on their Configuring IP MLS webpage under hardware
 requirements:

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/cat5000/rel_5_2/layer3/mls.htm

and make it sound like only the 2926G and 5000/5500 series do
 MLS.

Is there something significantly different about how the 6x00
series handles MLS? Evidently they use a different software,
and different routing hardware, MSFC and PFC instead of the
 5x00 NFFC. But it's still L3/L4 switching/MLS, right?

Hmmm. . . your experience with these products is appreciated.
