Reverse telnet [7:1328]

2001-04-19 Thread A.Strobel

When setting up reverse telnet, it is good to match the connection with the
router number:
1 for r1
2 for r2

6 for r6

What is the trick to have connection 6 to go to r6 even if there is no r5?

Tks.

Can't telnet- Can't ping

2001-01-03 Thread A.Strobel

Working for an enterperise has its disadvantages. Based on the new policy, now
I (network engineer) am unable to ping the outside world nor telnet to the
outside world.

Although my main job is taking care of Cisco gear inside the enterprise, I
hate the fact that someone with a half brain sitting at a proxy server
dictates me what I can do and what I can not do.

I might have a chance in removing these restrictions if I can justify that I
need to ping or telnet the ouside world.
Can you guys think of any justification?

TIA,
A. Strobel

Re: Cisco 3920 in CCIE Lab?

2000-12-01 Thread A.Strobel

The TokenRing switch WS-C3920, although part of the ccie Lab, it is a very
BAD
investment for a homelab.
If Cisco drops it ( that I presume will shortly ), it will not be even worth
the electricity it consumes. Other boxes that we collect, like 2500s, 5000s,
2900s are alive and will be around for a while. 3920 is on a life support.
Stay away from it!
FYI, huge Proteon token ring switches with 84 ports, are sold for under
$10.00
on ebay.

Router Firewall Config

2000-11-29 Thread A.Strobel

I have a cable connection to the Internet with one static IP and I am running
a webserver as well. For security, I would like to use a Cisco router as a
firewall.

Has anyone implemented such a setup?
Will a router with two Ethernet interfaces cut it?
I would appreciate if you could share your (masked) configuration.

I found this link on CCO
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/cisintwk/ics/cs003.htm
but it is calling for and additional serial interface and more than one static
IP.

Any input highly appreciated.

Two resources helped me the most to pass my MCNS:

Re:Failed CID (640-025)

2000-11-20 Thread A.Strobel

Why is it that some of you so underestimate the importance of SNA and token
ring in the industry? Why do you think that everything orbits around tcp/ip,
ethernet and windows?

Where do you think your insurance company, your bank, DMV, state and federal
agencies keep their data? On a pentium II 233 with 4.1 G hadrd drive, running
ip?

Hell no. All the huge databses are kept on IBM mainframes and they run SNA and
are token ring based. That is why Cisco improves DLSw to DLSw+. That is why
Cisco makes sure that his ccie's know RIF and know how to calculate it. SNA
and token ring are here and they will be here for at least another 6 to 7
years.

You underestimated the CID. I bet you finished with still 30 minutes to go and
you were sure that you have passed. This happens to everyone.
It is a tough, SOB exam. You can not compare it with DCN. If you got 500, it
means that you did not take it seriously. If you can get your hands on the
official Cisco courseware (on ebay?), buy it and read it line by line and
memorize and understand line by line.

Also, buy the practice test from Boson and make sure that you score 100% every
time. Then go take the test and pray that you pass.

For your information, I passed ACRC with the first try, but it took me three
tries to pass CID. And when I passed, I passed with a very very very narrow
margin.

I have a good news for you though. After you pass CID, you are just a tiny bit
away from ccie written.

Re: Thoughts on the 640-25 CID exam

CID is a tough exam. Even Brad Ellis ( as a CCIE ) has failed it once.
It is kind of exam that you finish with 30 minutes time left and you are

Study hard for it. Use all the resources that you can get your hands on,

Re: Scripts for IOS upgrades

2000-11-17 Thread A.Strobel

For God's sake do not even think about using CWSI RME (Resource Manager
Essentials)to upgrade IOSs.
It looks good (GUI), but it is damn slow, sensitive, and fails for all kinds
of reasons.
A few months ago we decided to upgrade IOSs on about 15 of our 2924 switches.

With telnetting I could have done the upgrade in 150 minutes max.
First, It took us a week to collect all the information that RME needed and
take care of error messages and snmp communities and enable passwords. We had
allocated 4 hours to do this job after we thought we are ready. To cut the
long stroy short, after four hours, out of 15 only 3 were done with the help
of CWSI RME, the other 12 we had to upgrade through telnetting. Easy, fast and
reliable. The irony is, to upgrade by telnetting I used an old 486 laptop.
CWSI needs (minimum!) 256 meg RAM, 4G HDrive and PII200 or above!

experience using this could give a better and more in depth response.

As I understand it, you load software images into RME and it evaluates
the routers to see if they support it them and then uploads when specified.

Cisco Teminology problem

Network people have a language that when they speak, no other non-networker

I thought I am a networker and I understand the language, but I am stuck on

What is Cisco talking about?
Does it mean to use syslog or logging buffered to put less pressure on the

Translation into human language is much appreciated.

Boot Sequence

2000-11-06 Thread A.Strobel

How in the world is it possible that there are so many contradicting answers
to a simple question:

On a router: config register is 0x2102
there is no boot system command in the configuration
and there is no valid image file in the flash
what will happen?

Simple question, right?

Now watch the answers:

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/access/acs_fix/cis2500/2501/2500ug/conf.htm
- xtocid288623
This link says:

If after five attempts a valid Cisco IOS image is not found in Flash memory,
the router reverts to boot ROM mode.
So, the answer is [boot ROM]

Next: Cisco Net Academy, Sem.2 CBT Chapter 5, 5.1.2 or Cisco Networking
Academy Program: First Year Companion Guide, pg. 252. says:
- Try to boot from network and then from ROM
So, the answer is [Network, ROM]

Next: CCNA exam book by Wendell Odom (official cisco book)
says: will not proceed and terminate the boot process. You must do password
recovery to change the cofig register.

Can someone with a hard evidence ( apparently my evidences suck ) please tell
me which answer is the correct one?

No guesses please.

Agreed - IN SPADES!! I studied the subject material on the objectives list
and still managed to fail a few times. Finally I gave up and read an actual
study guide that helped word the information the way the test words it
(Robert Padjen's CCDA Study Guide by Sybex - Highly recommended!). This is
simply the only way to go with the old Cisco tests. Knowing the material
just isn't enough; you have to know the TEST.

don't kick yourself too hard, its a pretty challenging test with a broad
 range of material.

I saw some typos as well. The questions are actually probably intended to
be vauge, intended so that the answer isn't obvious, or that maybe their

CID test which I also thought was horribly written. I put in alot of
 study

several

Well, hopefuly you will re-take it soon too, while its still fresh in your
head. At least now that you have seen the test, you probably know what to
 start readin up on.

Then to make matters worse, I was mad driving back to my office and I
 wasn't
paying attention and I got a speeding ticket. Hopefully my day will

About Frame Relay

2000-10-01 Thread A.Strobel

Sometimes, understanding just one sentence takes hours.
The following sentence has taken my time for more than a week, still I can not
get it.
Could somebody please explain and enlighten me please:

"Frame Relay network, like most WANs, is based on star topologies, and does
not support one-to-any broadcasting. "

This is from the CID book by Matthew Birkner, page 302.

TIA

CIR and routing metric

2000-09-25 Thread A.Strobel

Hi,
I have a discussion here with my boss regarding the effect of CIR on the
routing metric.

He says CIR has nothing to do with the routing metric and I think It is
impossible that routing metric is no affected by CIR. Non of us can prove the
other one wrong.

Can some one please shed a light on this subject?

Thanks
