OT: URGENT - Require lab 28 Oct - 4th Nov 2002 [7:52627]

2002-09-03 Thread Ash Aslam

Hi,

My lab date is on 17th October 2002 in Brussels's, and I would like to swap
for a date in early November (before the 4th), or late October (after the
28th). This is due to work related reasons, e.g. major project assigned,
etc. Ideally I would like the date in Brussels's but other locations around
the world will be considered.

Please let me know ASAP if you would like to swap or give up your lab date
between the listed dates.

Thanks Regards!
Ash

Subinterface P-2-P [7:30070]

2001-12-24 Thread Ash Aslam

Hello group,

I am trying to set-up a point-to-point subinterface but I do not see the
point-to-point or multipoint options under the physical interface as
follows:

r5-s(config)#interface serial 0.1 ?

I am having problems creating the point-to-point subinterface on both the
2500 and 2600 router platforms. 2503 has IOS Version 12.1(5) and 2612 has
IOS Version 12.1(4). I am not sure if this is IOS bug related.

I have tried various things but to no avail. Can anyone shed some light
with a brief example?

Thanks in adv,
Ash

Frame Relay Basics - Inverse-arp problem [7:23321]

2001-10-17 Thread Ash Aslam

Hi there,

I am trying to set-up the following Frame Relay config's on my routers:

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/125/14.html#14-A

I am having a problem in not being able to see anything when I issue the
following command:

Spicey#show frame-relay map

In the above URL the output is listed as:

Spicey#show frame-relay map
Serial0 (up): ip 3.1.3.2 dlci 140(0x8C,0x20C0), dynamic,
  broadcast,, status defined, active

The serial 0 on my Spicey Router just keeps going up, down, up down, etc.
etc every 10 secs or so. The serial cable is connected and checked ok via
show controllers serial 0 as DTE.

The DCE clocking is not configured, nor is there a Frame Relay Switch in the
URL config's. I can't quite understand how the dynamic mapping is taking
place in the URL and why I am not seeing Inverse-arp working?

Any responses appreciated.

Thanks Regards,
Ash

How many STP are possible to have on one Catalyst Switch?

Can anyone confirm if each VLan has it's own Spanning Tree priority number?

The above (second) question is in reference to Bruce Caslow's explanation in
BRS Vol. 1, Page 821, last sentence in Paragraph 2.

Any thoughts!

Hi Group!!

I would like to know if it's possible to separate the two ISDN B Channels so
that one remains active whilst the other one is free. I have checked on the
Cisco web site and Cisco press books but could not find anything on how to
configure the BRI Channels separately.

Can someone pls shed some light by providing a small config or point me in
the right direction.

Thanks kind Regards,
Ash

Hi Phil,

Yes, your were correct in saying that there was no .bin @ the end of the

I agree with Gareth- No .bin @ the end of the image you have flagged for
copying

 Source file name? c2500-jos56i-l.121-5

I always go to the source file highlight it for "Rename" on a right click
to the label area of the file. Hit Rename, then either copy or Cntrl C.
This method will save the name of your image in your Windows buffer you
are free to past it into Hyper Term. It's less work I can't tell you how
many times I've left off a letter or dash.

Let us know how you make out !!!

I have recently installed Windows 2000 Pro. on my PC and I am having

Initially I had Windows NT 4 and Windows 95 and never had any problems.

I can ping the tftp server OK:

RE: 2509 start-up message!! Still not working....

2000-12-08 Thread Ash Aslam

Hi there,

I have tried the recommendations made and it still doesn't work. As
mentioned previously I get the following error at start-up:

%SYS-4-CONFIG_NEWER: Configurations from version 12.0 may not be correctly
 under stood.

I have tried the "write mem" and "reload" commands after upgrading the
image, but no joy!! The registry key is set to 0x2102 which is ok.

What is the remedy for the above warning message?

Another problem is that the router tries to resolve the actual hostname
after the boot/POST check:

Translating "RouterC_TermServ"

==END OF ROUTER OUTPUT DUMP=

As you can see on the very last line the IOS is trying to resolve the actual
hostname "RouterC_TermServ". The router stops responding at this stage just
before it gets to the user level (Router) prompt. I press the Return/Enter
key several times but nothing happens.

I found the only way around this is to physically re-boot the router, go
into boot mode, change the registry from 0x2102 to 0x2142.
Once the image is loaded, I go into privilege mode and change the registry
key back to 0x2102.
I issue the "no ip domain-lookup" command to stop the Router name from
resolving, I then do "write mem", "reload".

The router starts to work fine at this stage.

But when I physically turn the Router off (or issue a reload command during
the small lab exercises I do), it goes back to the same problem of trying to
(Translating "RouterC_TermServ") just before it gets to the user level
prompt.

I have also changed the flash modules to see if that will make any change
but still the same problem?

Any hints on this issue to save me from going through all this each time I
turn the Router on?

Thxs again,
Ash

RE: dream lab

2000-12-08 Thread Ash Aslam

Hi Nandit,

Answer to this question took me quite a lot of time and research to find out
when I first got interested in Cisco and wanted to build a home lab for
practice.

I don't believe there is a right or wrong way in building a lab at home for
practice as there is quite a selection of Cisco hardware to choose from. It
all depends on how much you want to spend. Of course the more you spend the
better your lab will be.

My personal opinion is that the most important thing in building a home lab
(especially for CCIE level) is the selection (variety) of interfaces on the
routers and not really what router types you have (unless of course your
going for better performance, i.e. faster routers, modularity, etc).

I would say that for CCNA having three routers to practice on is a bonus.
2500 Series and above would be ideal. For CCNP having 4 Routers and a
Catalyst switch would be great. One of the Router's should have at least 4
Serial interfaces for Frame Relay Switch set-up, BGP Route Reflectors, etc.
Switch type could be any but more generally used for home practice are the
Cisco Catalyst 2901 or Cat. 5000 Switches.

I am currently in the process of building the following CCIE lab at home for
practice. I have:

Catalyst 2901 Switch
-12 port 10/100 Ethernet module - Software 4.5(9).
-Supervisor I engine - Software 4.5(9).

Cisco 2924XL Enterprise Switch.
Cisco 2502 (16MB/16MB) (2 Serial, 1 Token Ring)
Cisco 2503 (16MB/16MB) (2 Serial, 1 Ethernet, 1 ISDN)
Cisco 2509 (16MB/16MB) (2 Serial, 8 Async, 1 Ethernet)

Cisco 4500 (8MB/32MB)
-Dual port serial module (NP-4T)
-Dual port Ethernet module (NP-2E)
-Dual port token ring module (NP-2R)

I will be getting:

Cisco 2513 (16MB/16MB) (2 Serial, 1 Ethernet, 1 Token Ring)
Cisco 2522 (16MB/16MB) (8 Serial, 1 Ethernet, 1 ISDN)
Cisco 2610 with 1 x VoIP module
Cisco 2620 with 1 x VoIP module (Used for ISL/Trunking)
ISDN Simulator.

This is by no means a perfect (dream!!) lab and is based on my own research.
You probably will have noticed I do not have any ATM gear as this is a bit
pricey and I will be hiring some time on ccbootcamp, etc...closer to the
actual CCIE lab.

Hope this helps!!

RE: Colt Exams??

2000-12-08 Thread Ash Aslam

I will also be taking the BSCN on December 20th.

As for if there are "fill in the blank" or "choose from the list" type
questions in the BSCN exam. They give your a list of 50-60 questions to
choose from (most of the choices are bogus) and you can quite easily
eliminate it down to 1-2 choices if you know the answer. You have to select
the correct answer from the list and type it in the line provided. You must
know if the command is used in global mode, interface mode, etc.

There is was a good archive on the list a few week ago for BSCN exam from:

Niraj,
I am studying for the BSCN and using the Colt Exams as well. I find there
are many errors in the scoring and in the questions themselves. I have been
looking up the answers in the book. To me the benefit is to see the range
of topics and detail Cisco is showing us. Perhaps a glimpse into the actual
test.

I find that in looking up the answers I am learning more than I would if the
system worked as it should.

A question for the group...
I purchased the Boson tests for the BSCN and in these tests there are many
"fill in the blank" questions where you must type in commands. Is this the
format on the actual test or are the answers there to choose from? It is
much more time consuming to study for a "recall" test than for a
"recognition" test. There are no "fill in the blank" questions in the Colt
Exams.

RE: 2509 start-up message!! Still not working....

2000-12-08 Thread Ash Aslam

Thanks to all respondents to this email. My 2509 Router is now working back
to normal.

%SYS-4-CONFIG_NEWER: Configurations from version 12.0 may not be correctly
under stood.
Solution: Upgrade to newer version of bootrom.

Router freezes at "Translating "RouterC_TermServ".
Rodgers Moore's solution worked:
The "no ip domain-lookup" command should be on the router behind the
terminal server, this won't get rid of the "translating" line/error/whatever
but it will cause the prompt to return quickly. When domain lookup is ON,
I've seen it take up to two minutes before the prompt comes back. So just
be patient.

Thanks chaps,
Ash

I just wanted to add a comment about the "translating" statement. I've
seen this many times working with my lab equipment.

When a router is behind another router acting as a terminal server you will
sometimes get this message when reverse telnetted into the router. It's
normal and caused by the router's prompt being echoed by the term server
back to the CLI on the router you're connected to.

The "no ip domain-lookup" command should be on the router behind the
terminal server, this won't get rid of the "translating" line/error/whatever
but it will cause the prompt to return quickly. When domain lookup is ON,

 Hi there,

I have tried the recommendations made and it still doesn't work. As
mentioned previously I get the following error at start-up:

%SYS-4-CONFIG_NEWER: Configurations from version 12.0 may not be
correctly
  under stood.

I have tried the "write mem" and "reload" commands after upgrading the
image, but no joy!! The registry key is set to 0x2102 which is ok.

What is the remedy for the above warning message?

Another problem is that the router tries to resolve the actual hostname
 after the boot/POST check:

Catalyst 2901 IOS Upgrade ??? Pls Help!!

2000-11-15 Thread Ash Aslam

Hiya all,

I have a Cisco 2901 Switch. When I bought the Switch it had IOS version
2.1(8) loaded. The Switch was working great until I decided to install IOS
4.5(5), so that I can practice ISL/Trunking.

I upgraded the Supervisor module to version 4.5(5) as follows:

100BaseTX Supervisor WS-X2900 - IOS 4.5(5)
10/100BaseTX Ethernet WS-X2901 - IOS 2.1(8)

Now I cannot seem to be able to ping the TFTP workstation.

Can someone please shed some light as to why I cannot connect to the TFTP to
upload/download IOS images. Is there another alternative to uploading
images without having to go through the sc0 interface. Maybe directly
through one of the 12 Ports on the 10/100BaseTX Ethernet WS-X2901.

Also the Switch now for some reason seems to reboot itself automatically
when I issue the "Show version" command at the IOS prompt. The output for
this can be seen at the bottom of this list.

Any feedback will be appreciated.

Thank you for your help.

Best Rgds,
Ash
