Kevin,

How about adding a secondary address to the router interface, that would
allow you to telnet to the switch and change it's address.

Our group got a support call that a port wasn't working on a switch.

A colleague started looking into the case and found that he couldn't connect
to the switch. (or ping etc)

He was able to get to another switch which is directly connected.

Using CDP he was able to see that the switch is incorrectly configured with
the wrong IP address.

The real subnet is 10.235.x.x but CDP nei det says that the switch has
10.255.x.x configured.

Is there a way we can get to the switch and fix it over the wire?

John,

It will be half duplex unless it has been configured for full duplex.
Setting an ethernet interface to full duplex is done in software and
requires a recent IOS. I have forgotten the minimum rev required but I know

RE: PIX in parallel with another appliance box

Pat,

You can use a seperate hub or switch outside the PIX, or if the switch on
the inside has a lot of available ports you could make another VLAN on it
and have the new VLAN active on three ports; one for the ISP and one for

 Hello,

My PIX is sitting directly on the internet. The
cat5 connection from ISP is connected to external
(ethernet) inerface of PIX. The inside(ethernet)
interface is conneted to switch. From this switch
internal network is connected. I have another Firewall
appliance with 2 ethernet inerface which needs to be
connected in parallel to PIX. Can anybody give some
hints as how these connections are to made? I am
thinking just to connect ISP connection to an ordinary
hub from there take two connections to outside
interface for both firewall. Connect inside interface
of both firewall to same switch. Is this right way of
doing it? My only concern is can both outside
interface of firewall be connected on on same hub? In
fact External IPs for both default gateway fall in
same subnet. OR is there a requirement of any kind of
 a router or switch?

Both firewalls need to be in parallel. One can't sit
behind other OR can't be in DMZ of other.

Thanks a lot for any advices...

RE: DMZ

2001-01-28 Thread Dave Swink

John,

http://www.pcwebopedia.com/ will give you a brief description.

It is not really too complex. A DMZ is an area of intermediate security
between the Internet and the internal network. The idea is to allow access
to some resources (Web servers, mail servers, etc) for users coming from the
Internet without allowing them full access into your internal network.

This link discusses setting up a PIX firewall with a DMZ:

NAT meaning are you referencing the DC by a false IP address, or by it's
  valid address.

If you are not using NAT, then forget about the IPSec, just
 think of it as
 a
router to router link. You will be attempting to talk to the DC using
internal addressing, so really all that is required on the remote end is
that the WINS server entries are configured correctly OR a

   UDP-level broadcasts (like
138/139 Netbios) to the NT server.

The other thing you can do is bypass that broadcast

LMHosts files on the workstations at the branch

(if you use the #PRE designation) the NetBIOS cache

   things will work just
   fine then.

   In LMHOSTS. :

(ip address) (Netbios name) #PRE #DOM:(domain name

Have you ever stopped to think about how many potential employers are

 Dear Pradeep Kumar,

You don't add anything positive to the discussion, and in fact, only cause

You obviously don't understand "normal" discussion group conduct. You also

RE: Port Flapping

2001-01-15 Thread Dave Swink

John,

This could be a very serious problem. It looks like you have a bridging
loop. Check both ends of the trunk to make sure everything is set the same:
duplex, speed, native vlan, FastetherChannel settings, trunk encapsulation,
VLANs allowed on the trunk, etc. This problem can grow to crash your whole
network.

Very important: do not reboot any of your switches until you have resolved
the conflict. A lot of Spanning Tree traffic is definitely to be avoided
until the problem is fixed.

A PIX will not allow a telnet session to the outside interface unless it is
running IPSEC. I will usually open a hole for telnet from the management

applying the telnet command on the PIX. It's a little convoluted but more

 Subject: Pix Failover Question

Hey gang! Any Pix gurus out there?

I've been playing with a couple of Pixs (510s) trying to get the
 failover to
work. I thought it would be a piece of cake, but it just isn't showing me
any love. Ive got (2) Pix 510s that each have 3 NICs in them (internal,
untrusted, DMZ) each running 4.4. Everything seems all fine and
 dandy until
about 10 minutes later when the standby PIX starts stealing the DMZ
 connections.

 Any thoughts?

RE: MSFC

2000-09-12 Thread Dave Swink

Jeff,

Try this link: http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/473/14.html , it has the
recovery procedures if you have erased the msfc's bootloader flash. It is
not too bad if you have a 4500/4700 router to reinstall the image.
Otherwise you can try the xmodem procedure (it did not work for me). I had
to have TAC RMA a replacement flash. It's embarrassing but there is just
not a good recovery procedure if you don't have a 4500/4700 handy.

 Subject: MSFC

Hello all. Quick question... I cleared my running-config and then
 foolishly
gave my start-up config the boot as well. I can still access the msfc, but
 it shows:

 Router(boot)#

I tried to change the hostname and it's still showing this. Also,
 I tried to
go ahead and configure from global ip routing and no dice! I
 can't configure
any routing period. Any clue as to how to fix this?

 Cheers,
 Jeff

RE: NO. of CCIE

2000-08-29 Thread Dave Swink

Earl Aboytes announced achieving his CCIE status (congrats Earl!) in
groupstudy just yesterday and gave his new CCIE number as #6097. Since
Cisco started numbering CCIEs at 1025 that would make the worldwide total
just about 5,072. Still a pretty elite group.

Thats right, there are only like 7800 or something. I guy I work
 with just
passed his lab last week and he is 78xx if I remember correctly. 3,
c'mon, the site would state that.

RE: DELL

2000-05-24 Thread Dave Swink

Clark,
Thanks for bringing some interesting opportunities to the list. Come again.

Michael,
Do you know something negative about these jobs or this recruiter that you
are not telling us? Have you already corresponded with Clark to verify that
these jobs do not involve Cisco or internetworking? If you are just being
rude because Clark is not offering anything that works for you today, then I
would suggest your Delete button will do the job with less fuss.

The job titles have little importance, but I don't see anywhere
 in your job
description where the word "Cisco" shows up. So, unless the positions you
offer have anything to do with the subject of this mailing
 list... please go
 spam elsewhere.

We are aware NT and Novell are not networks-that they are
 operating systems
to facilitate utilization of particular systems that are networked
 together.
Most everyone understands job titles are hacked, cobbled and
abbreviated...Network Systems Admin, Systems Admin, with the billions of
acronyms floating about I'm sure we will disagree on the best usage of
all-but at the end of the day...where does this issue stand in relative
 importance?

 NETWORKS,

 idea that job
offers can be sent out to the list, thats pretty cool.
