Re: ISDN Help [7:12365]

2001-07-14 Thread Dennis Bailey

This happened to me once and turning off fast switching on the BRI interface
made it work. command is 'no ip route-cache'. I am not sure if that will
solve your problem but give it a shot.

I also notice that you are routing for network 10.0.0.0 and 192.168.0.0 but
do not see any interfaces in those networks. You can probably remove those
from the config.

On your dialer-list, unless you want the line to stay up all the time, you
may want to narrow your definition of interesting traffic.

I think it's hit or miss on anything sooner than March 2002. Basically, I
think you can 'luck out' if you happen to search for dates at the same time
someone may be cancelling and re-scheduling or trying to swap a date. I
scheduled mine last week and came up with an available date during this

Re: Connecting a 6509 to a 3500 [7:13229]

2001-07-22 Thread Dennis Bailey

You don't need an ip address on port 2/1 on the 6509. The ip address you
want to set on the 6509 is int sc0 which is the management interface on the
6509:

set int sc0 up
set int sc0 192.168.3.100
set ip route 0.0.0.0 192.168.3.254

(I may be slightly off on the syntax, just use the online help if I am.)

Next steps apply if you are running more than one VLAN
Set up a VTP domain
Set 2/1 on the 6509 and 0/1 on the 3500 as trunks if you are running more
than one vlan.

Keep in mind that the IP address and route on both switches is for in-band
management only and has nothing else to do with L2 switch operation

Re: HELP!! EIGRP and Multiple Connections (VLANS) [7:14579]

2001-08-01 Thread Dennis Bailey

How many remote sites off each 7500?
Are the remote sites all 'stub' sites?
Do the remotes have connections to both 7500's (ie. primary and backup pvc)?

The passive-interface idea you have is probably a good one.

If your remote sites have a connection to both 7500's, make sure that you
have outbound distribution lists on the remote routers so that the remotes
don't advertise anything but what is behind them.

If your addressing is organized in such a way that you can summarize
everything behind each of the 7500's back into the core RSM's that would
probably also help. This way if a remote link bounces, the 7500 will see
the change and deal with it but the RSM's will not be affected.

Re: suggestions for CCDP book [7:14846]

I used the Cisco Press Books "Cisco Internetwork Design" and "Top Down
Network Design". The first one was probably enough for the exam, but the
second helps to put things into real world perspective.

As with all the exams, use the exam objectives on cisco.com/certifications
to avoid putting too much energy into topics you will never see on the exam.

Chuck is right on the money. I used nearly the same strategy for studying
but did not spend enough time on the Token Ring papers. Passed anyway but
could have been a little sharper on those papers. For practice tests I used
Boson #1 and #2 from www.boson.com If you have taken the CID test, that is
also a good way to guage if you are ready for the CCIE written.

Good Luck

Re: Cat 6.5K error messages [7:15250]

2001-08-08 Thread Dennis Bailey

If this is a server port then I would troubleshoot as follows:
Set speed/duplex on both ends of the connection and disable all other
autonegotiation features:
set port channel 8/48 off
set trunk 8/48 off .
If problem continues,
Replace the patch cord from the server to the jack (or the server to the
switch if there is no jack) If the problem continues,
Replace the patch cord from the patch panel to the switch. If the problem
continues,
Move the server to a different switch port(properly configured). If the
problem continues,
Try another NIC card in the server.

Re: CID [7:30456]

Hi Juan,

This link may be helpful. The is the exam objectives for CID test from the
cisco website. I have found that it is best to use these as a guideline for
studying regardless of the study material used so that I do not focus too
heavily on areas not covered.
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/10/wwtraining/certprog/testing/current_exam

I used Cisco Press Cisco Internetwork Design as the main material for
preparing for the test and also read Top Down Network Design.

Re: using the upgrade command on a GSR [7:17767]

2001-09-03 Thread Dennis Bailey

Nasty stuff. I had similar issues with GSR's recently. If you aren't
careful, you might end up with hardware that is not compatible with the IOS.
What I found was that some of the new versions of IOS (i am running
12.0.16S) are not compatible with some of the older versions of hardware. I
don't know if cisco is not doing regression testing on older hw before
releasing new IOS but I ended up replacing both GSP's. It was a very long
night..luckily the parts depot is less than an hour away and my four
hour contract usually gets parts in my hands in less than 2 hours. It took
two attempts to get the right combination.

Work with TAC and if these are critical have them raise the priority of the
case to 2 and stay on them. I was able to get the TAC engineers and DE's
working together to resolve my issue very quickly. When all is said and
done, the support from Cisco is absolutely tops.

Re: Cisco Router Issues - very good link [7:18264]

2001-09-03 Thread Dennis Bailey

Chuck,

I have just about everything together for my CIE home lab but am having
trouble finding a complete CaveBear Percussive Maintenance Kit. The site
recommends several items which I have but was wondering if you or anyone
else on the list has ever tried to pass the test without hands on or at
least taking the Percussive Maint course.

I realize that this may start a flame war b/c what I am saying may actually
reduce the value of the CIE if in fact the tests can be passed without many
years of practical experience. Paper CIE's.

PS--Anybody have config examples using Opto-Cables in a back to back setup
with a pair of MMR's?

Simple pre-sales level stuff on 'stratacom' is all I remember having to

Re: PIX out of a PC.... [7:19419]

Using software which designed for use on a cisco hardware platform on
another hardware platform is a violation of the software license(see General
Limitations (i). Be careful, read the license. A lot of the people here

this. Besides, how many of you would flame the pants off someone looking

Re: EIGRP problem [7:21510]

2001-09-30 Thread Dennis Bailey

An easier way to see if you have any active routes would be sh ip eigrp
topology active

You could also add 'eigrp log-neighbor-changes' (double check the dashes)
under the eigrp configuration. Make sure you have no logging consol in your
config as well and either log to a syslog server or to a buffer. You will
also want to have the time on all the servers synched so you can match up
the log messages.

Re: clock setting problem [7:21487]

2001-09-30 Thread Dennis Bailey

On the clock question, the smaller routers do not have a battery to keep the
clock settings during a reboot. You could add ntp to your configuration so
the clock is set automagically when the router's links come back up. Not
sure what you are asking on the second question but why wouldn't you force
the speed of the link to the speed of the hub or switch port you are
connected to?

CiscoSecureACS to control terminal access to routers [7:21958]

2001-10-03 Thread Dennis Bailey

I am wondering if anyone has been able to use CiscoSecure ACS for controling
access to router console and vty lines. I am currently running ACS 2.5 and
am using it for authentication of dialup and vpn remote access users. I
have been trying to figure out how to use it to control access to my routers
but seem to get to a point where authentication fails and the message in the
failed attemps log is "unknown NAS"

Is it necessary to define every device in cisco secure for this to work? I
know I must be missing something simple, I can get it to work fine when I
configure it for terminal access on one of my remote access routers (which
are defined as NAS in cisco secure) but nothing else.

Any ideas, links, examples, abusewhatever you feel is appropriate :-)

Thanks,
Dennis
