Re: CIM Expert Labs Routing

2000-10-07 Thread George Zhang

Brian,

I just used CIM expert lab the past couple of days. It consists of five labs:
Frame Relay, OSPF, OSPF Summarization, EIGRP and BGP. It's very basic. I
would say that it's good starting point of your lab test preparation. While I
have not taken the CCIE lab yet, I don't know what exactly is tested in the
lab. But from what I heard about the lab test and what I know about the CIM
Expert Lab, the CIM Expert lab is not as challenging as the CCIE lab test.

Hope it helps.

About University CCIE practice labs

2000-10-11 Thread George Zhang

I am thinking to take the Cisco University CCIE practice lab (described
at
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/625/ccie/exam_preparation/practice_labs.html).
The closet one to me is the one in University of Minnesota. I wonder if
anybody in this group has used the University CCIE practice lab. What's
your opinion of the practice lab? Is the practice lab at the same level
of difficulty and complexity of the real CCIE lab test? Any comment is
appreciated.

Try 'clear frame' on the spoke router, see if it still works. If that does do it, save
the config and reload the spoke router.

I think it's RIP v1 by default. To enable RIP v2, you need to use the

Re: Terminal server not able to Reverse Telnet

2000-11-04 Thread George Zhang

You probably still have a session connected to that router. To check that, use "show
session" command. It lists all active sessions. If you see a session connected to the
router you want to telenet to, just type the number, for example 2, then return. It
will take you to that particular router or switch. Hope it helps.

Re: bri flapping with demand cirquit/igrp redistribution

2001-03-27 Thread George Zhang

I also had the same problem a few days ago. Here is how I fixed it:

1. Isolate the problem by shutting down all other interfaces besides the interfaces
between the two related routers;

2. Disable all other routing protocols (non-OSPF ones);

3. Turn off IGRP redistribution to OSPF;

3. Now, verify the ISDN demand circuit. It should be quiet now.

4. Now, start unshut the interfaces you have shut down one by one and verify
that the ISDN demand circuit. It should might come up briefly but it should go
down and keep quiet after some interfaces are unshut. If the ISDN line
keep dialing, you should know which interface is causing the problem.

5. If the ISDN line is still quiet after you unshut all interfaces, turn on your other
router
protocols such as IGRN, RIP, etc one by one. Again, verify the IDN line after
each change as above.

5. If the ISDN line is still quiet after you enable all other routing protocols, turn
on your
redistribution one by one. Again verify ISDN line along the way.

If you follow these steps, you should be able to pin down what is causing your ISDN
line to stay up.

Hope it helps.

CCIE#8903 [7:37490]

2002-03-06 Thread George Zhang

All,

The title says it all. I took my first attempt at the CCIE lab test
yesterday (March 5) in Halifax and received the "Congratulations on Passing
the CCIE Lab!" this morning.

I was the only person taking the lab test in Halifax yesterday. I was told
that there was another person scheduled yesterday but did not show up. My
test started about 8:15 AM in the morning. We broke for lunch at about
12:20PM. By then, I only finished all the IGP stuff and felt some pressure
on time. But I have already reviewed rest of the test and knew that I could
go through the rest quickly. After the 15 min lunch break, I worked through
rest of the test very quickly. By about 3:00 PM, I finished every thing
except one small requirement that I had no clue how to do it. I decided to
skip that item. Then, I started reviewing and checking my config. Along
the way of reviewing/checking, I spotted and fixed a few issues. Just about
the time I finished reviewing every thing, the proctor walked in and told me
that it' time. I looked at the watch. It was 4:30 PM. My proctor was
Steve. Steve is a great proctor. He answered quite a few of my questions
and cleared my mis-understanding and confusion about the requirements of the
test.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all people who helped me to
achieve my goal. First, I would like to thank my wife for her support and
understanding. Without her support, there is no way I could achieve my
goal. Next, I will give my thanks to Bruce, Val, and Fred of
NetMasterClass. As I said earlier, the NMC1 class is the most important
part of my final preparation. Thanks to Katie Wong of Cisco who scheduled
me to access the ASET racks. Thats my primary resource for hands-on
practices for the past couple of months. Thanks to Eric Fairfield for
lending me a few routers when I was in Wisconsin. Also thanks to those that
I've either studied with or have helped me one way or another. Thanks also
to Paul for putting this great list together.

As far as my story, I started my quest of the Cisco certifications a little
over two and half years ago. I got my CCNA and CCNP in the first year.
Three months later, I passed the CCIE written test. I wanted to take the
lab a year ago. However, due to work and personal reasons, I did not get
time to do it until now. Last year, I was too busy to do much study. At
work, as a consultant, I was billing at least 40 hours/week for the whole
year. At home, my second child was born in February, my wife finished
school in July, and we moved to New Jersey from Wisconsin in September. In
October of last year, I foresaw a window of opportunity for me to take the
lab test early this year. Then, I lobbed my manager to let me go to the
ECP1 class. By the time my manager approved my training request, I found
that Mentor Technologies went belly up. However, I learned that Bruce and
Val founded a new company called NetMasterClass, LLC
(www.netmasterclass.net) and offering the NMC1 and NMC2 classes. I
registered and took the NMC1 class by the end January. By the end of last
year, the project I worked on finished. So since the beginning of this year
I got a lot of time to study. For the past couple of months, I have studied
8-10 hours every day.

As far as how I prepared, I have read most of the books (Doyle I & II,
Caslow, Halabi, Tam-Nam-Kee, Solie, Satterlee, etc.) recommended by people
on this list. Among this long list of books, the only one I dont like is
Solies book because there are too many errors in the book. There are a few
topics I was more confused after reading the book. I dont have a home lab.
So my primary resource for hands-on practice is remote labs such as Mentor
Technologies vlabs (not available any more), Cisco ASET lab. Because I
dont have a home lab, my preparation included more reading than hands-on
practice. That actually worked out very well for me. Above all, the most
important part of my preparation is the NMC1 class taught by Bruce, Val and
Fred. IF I HAD NOT TAKEN THE NMC1 CLASS, IT PROBABLY WOULD HAVE TAKEN ME
ONE OR TWO MORE ATTEMPTS BEFORE I COULD GET MY NUMBER. There are a lot of
things that just cannot be learned from reading books or practicing. So the
NMC1 class helped me to fill in that gap very well. It also helped me to
access my strength and weakness. So I know what to study on the last few
weeks. I strongly recommend taking the NMC1 class a few weeks before your
lab date.

Thanks again.

OT: How is the job market for CCNPs and/or CCIEs in NYC/NJ [7:16344]

2001-08-16 Thread George Zhang

Hi All,

I am very curious about the current job market in New York City/New
Jersey area for CCNP, CCIE type of people because I am in the process of
moving to northern New Jersey. If you are in that area, from that area
or know about that area, please kindly provide your answer/comments.
Your inputs will be greatly appreciated.

Q1. How hard/easy is it for someone with CCNP and/or CCIE with several
years of experience to find a decent job in that area? Let assume this
candidate has fair amount of hands-on experience and can configure a six
router lab with frame relay, OSPF, EIGRP, RIP, redistribution, IPX RIP,
IPX EIGRP, VLAN, etc in one hour or so.

Q2. What companies in that area are currently hiring?

Q3. What companies in that area are currently frozen? I know the answer
to this question might be a long list.

Q4. Which employer do you recommend?

Q5. Which employer you don't recommend?

Q6. Which reputable headhunters/search firms are specialized in placing
network professionals in that area?

Q7. Which headhunters/search firms you recommend?

Q8. Which headhunters/search firms you don't recommend?

Q9. Do employers still work with headhunters/search firms nowadays? It
is said that employers don't work with headhunters/search firms now
because of cost and availability of qualified candidates.

I think that many people in this group might be interest in the answers
to these questions as well. So your comments/input will be greatly
appreciated.

Thank you for all your help in advance.

2001-08-23 Thread George Zhang

Chuck,

Thank you for your response. However, there is difference between S.100 and
S100.

Following is what I found at Cisco website about S.100:
"S.100 is an industry standard architecture and API methodology providing
Computer Telephony"

While, S100 BUS is a standard (also known under the name IEEE 696) for
connection on Zilog Z80 or Intel 8080.

I am trying to dig out more information about "S.100".

Please let me know if you have any further information about S.100.

Thanks.

When you do 'copy tftp run', it merges the two configuration. I guess that
it's true for 'copy start run' too. Am I right?

CCNP Security Questions

2000-08-02 Thread George Zhang

I am interested in learning about CCNP---Security secialization. I wonder
if that exam is available now. If it's not available now, when will it be
available? What is the subject covered by this exam? Are there any books,
white papers, or any other resources that can be used to prepare for this
test? Any information is appreciated. Thanks.

Question regarding Catalyst 1912

2000-08-10 Thread George Zhang

With Cisco routers, you can backup the router configuration files by
using "copy run tftp". I wonder if there is equivalent functionality
for Catalyst 1900 running Firmware 8.x with the menu driven
configuration interface. Thanks.

Help needed with IPSec and NAT Configuration

2000-08-11 Thread George Zhang

Hi Group,

I gave a question regarding IPSec and NAT configuration. I am trying to
configure IPSec between a 3640 and 1605. The diagram of the network is
shown below:

--
--
||
150.26.154.249/30||
  ---fa0/0--|||3640
|||--S0/0---S0--|||1605   |||--E0---
 192.168.64.1/24 | |
150.26.154.250/30 ||  192.168.128.1/24
-- IPSec
channel--

IPSec needs to be configured between the 3640: S0/0 interface and 1605:
S0 interface.
Both 3640:S0/0 and 1605:S0 are using global IP address. Both 3640:fa0/0
and 1605:E0 are using private IP address. NAT is configured on both
3640 and 1606 to translate between the private and global IP addresses.

According to Cisco CCO, "If you use network address translation (NAT),
you should configure static NAT translations so that IPSec will work
properly. In general, NAT translation should occur before the router
performs IPSec encapsulation;in other word, IPSec should be working with
global address".

My questions are that,

(1) What does it mean by "NAT translation should occur before the router
performs IPSec encapsulation;in other word, IPSec should be working with
global address"? Does that mean I need one more router at both end to
do the NAT?

(2) Can I do IPSec with the diagram show above? If I can, how should I
configure the access-list? Should I be using the global or private IP
address in the acess-list, i.e. which one of the next two is correct,

A. access-list 120 permit ip 192.168.64.0 0.0.0.255 192.168.128.0
0.0.0.255
B. access-list 120 permit ip 150.26.154.249 0.0.0.0 150.26.154.250
0.0.0.0

I know quite a few people out there are CCNP-Security certified. Please
help me out. Thank you very much for your help in advance.

A question about IPSec

2000-08-31 Thread George Zhang

I read the following form Cisco documentation about IPSec:

"IKE uses UDP port 500. The IPSec ESP and AH protocols use PROTOCOL
numbers 50 and 51. Ensure that your access-list are configured so that
50, 51 and UDP port 500 traffic is not blocked ..."

My question is, what are the PROTOCOL numbers? This is the first time I
read or heard about "PROTOCOL number"? I know many protocols by names
such as TCP, UDP, ICMP etc, by I have never heard about PROTOCOL
numbers? What protocols 50 and 51 are associated with? Could someone
please explain that to me? Thanks.

Passed MCNS 2.0 and achieved CCNP + Security

2000-09-03 Thread George Zhang

I passed MCNS 2.0 a couple of days ago. It's a relatively easy test for
me. It has 60 questions and allowed time is 60 min. Most of the
questions are well written. It's much better than some of the CCNP v1.0
tests in this regard. Because there is no study guide is specially for
this test, I primarily used the Cisco Doc CD.

I would like to thank every one in this group. I learned a lot just by
reading the messages in this group. Reading this group and knowing that
every is studying and working hard in accumulating new knowledge and
skills is a big motivational factor for me. Thank you again.

CIT, CLSC and Rob Mathers

2000-05-17 Thread George Zhang

I am looking for Rob Mattews.

I read the following message posted here from Rob Mattews. He wanted to
trade his CIT(640-440) course material for CLSC material. I contacted
him off-line at [EMAIL PROTECTED] He asked me to send my CLSC material
to him. I sent my CLSC material to him through email about two weeks
ago. However, I have never heard from him after that. I have never
received any CIT material. I sent a couple of emails to him after
that. But I have not got any response. He must moved or changed his
email address or his computer is down since then.

Rob, please contact me off-line if you see this post. If anybody knows
him, please let him contact Thanks.

Passed CIT and now a CCNP

2000-06-05 Thread George Zhang

I passed CIT 4.0 today with a score of 834. It is my last test for
CCNP. I finished in about 90 minutes and had about 15 minutes to
review. The most difficult part of CIT, for me, is the ambiguity of the
questions. Another thing is that you have to guess what Cisco wants you
to answer. Without knowing how the score is calculated based on the
number of right/wrong answers, I had no idea if I passed or failed just
before I saw the "Congratulation". Overall, my test was in line with
previous posts regarding CIT.

Here is my road to CCNP:

ACRC: 12/22/99
CMTD: 2/7/00
CLSC: 5/1/00
CIT: 6/5/

I would like to take this opportunity to thank every one in this group,
especially those who have answered my questions and or communicated with
me directly. Knowing that many people are working towards CCNA, CCDA,
CCNP, CCDP, and CCIE has been a good motivation factor for me. Thank
you all.

I don't know if I want to get CCDA and CCDP before I go for CCIE.
I like to hear your opinions about the value of CCDA and CCDP. How much
can you learn by studying for CCDA and CCDP? How are they recognized in
the networking community? Your opinions are greatly appreciated.

Flavio,

I have not used the course manual. So I don't know if the questions are
closely related to the course manual. There are quite a few fill in the

CCNP Certificate + CID Training Material?

2000-06-13 Thread George Zhang

I passed my last CCNP test (CIT) a week ago and received my CCNP package
yesterday. Included in the packages are the CCNP certification, CCNP
wallet card and a congratulation letter. I remembered that in the
message posted about a week ago (by Chuck ?) mentioned that some
information about free CID training material was also included in the
package. However, there was nothing like that in my CCNP package.
Chuck, did it come in seperate package or the same CCNP package?
Anybody know if they stopped that give away? Thanks.

Problem reading CCO Doc CD

2000-09-15 Thread Yongzhi George Zhang

I have a problem reading the CCO Doc CD. The problem is that the
Figures in the HTML page is not displayed instead an ICON is displayed.
For example, if I want to read the "Internetwork Design Guide" at

http://127.0.0.1:8080/cc/td/doc/cisintwk/idg4/nd2002.htm

All the figures are not displayed while the text is displayed just
fine. Anybody knows how to fix this problem?

I know that if I read the PDF file at the same page as below

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/cisintwk/idg4/nd2002.pdf

The figures are displayed as expected. But it hard to move back and
forth while reading PDF file. I really prefer to read the HTML page.

Thank you for your help in advance.

Passed R&S CCIE written

2000-09-28 Thread Yongzhi George Zhang

I passed the CCIE - Routing and switching qualification exam today.
It's a pretty hard test. I got CCNP v1.0 back in June and CCNP security
three weeks ago. I thought that I was ready for the CCIE written after
I got CCNP. It turns out that there is a big gap between the two.
Regarding preparation for CCIE written, the most difficult part is
finding the information and putting all the pieces together because
there is no single book that covers all the topics of the test.

I would like to thank every body in this group, especially those who
answered my questions.

Any way, it's over and the real challenge starts now.
