Traffic Monitoring [7:64351]

2003-03-04 Thread Igor Vilensky
Greetings,

I have a 3640 connecting to the Internet on T-1 via PIX-515 in the central
office.
Multiple branch offices have frame relay connections to the central office.
One branch office is complaining about slow connectivity.
Checking 'show frame pvc' for that office indicates that they are
downloading 100x more than any other branch office.
Each branch office has its own subnet.
Can you recommend software to determine which hosts at the branch office
generate all this traffic and what kind of traffic (ie. protocol) it is?
I am more comfortable with unix tools, and I am the central office. The
branch offices only have windows machines.

Will summarize.

PS. please contact me at [EMAIL PROTECTED], I subscribe to the digest,
and want to get on this ASAP.

How Can I tell that someone else is in global config mode? [7:64079]

2003-02-28 Thread Igor Vilensky
Greetings,

I wrote a very simple script which logs to a router, executes a
configuration command ( usually 'username xxx password xxx'), and exits.
It has been pointed out that if somebody else is in global command mode it
might be trouble.
I know that problems occur when two people try to edit a unix text file at
the same time.
Is there any mechanism IOS utilizes to safeguard against conflicts of this
nature?
In case it is problematic, I would like to know how to determine if anybody
else is in global config mode.
Given that, my script could wait until nobody else is in that mode and then
execute the command.

Thanks for your consideration.
Will summarize.

Hello,

W2K and XP recognize CISCO flash cards without any problems, what do you
need - drivers, which you can download from internet. As soon as drivers
will be installed you can start to use your flash card as a removable HD.

Make sure that you have the cables from PBX to E&M interfaces made by the

Re: IOS firewall feature set

2001-02-11 Thread Igor Glavanic

You would need a different features of th IOS on your router.
Here is the the URL with all the details (you will need CCO login):
http://www.cisco.com/warp/customer/432/features.html

Perhaps you will need more RAM as well. Use IOS uprade planer on TAC to
learn the upgrade path. You can download the software from there as well.
I think your IOS must have letter "o" in order to support firewall.

Re: Intermittent ping

2001-02-06 Thread Igor Glavanic

Check your routing table.
You could have two routes to the same destination and one of them is not
working for some reason.

It looks like that

R1#ping 1.0.0.1
Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 1.0.0.1, timeout is 2 seconds:
!.!.!
Success rate is 100 percent (5/5), round-trip min/avg/max = 12/14/20 ms

2. All-in-One CCIE Study Guide (with CD-ROM) by Roosevelt Giles (Hardcover)
3. CCIE : Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert Study Guide by John Swartz,

4. CCIE Prep.com Study Guide by Louis D. Rossi, et al (Hardcover)
5. CCIE Prep Kit 350-001 Routing and Switching (Exam Guide) (Paperback)

Can I have some feedback on the books if anyone have used them for CCIE

Re: OSPF External Summarization

2001-02-05 Thread Igor Glavanic

It is not the range -
that is reversed subnet mask
Example masks:
try with 255.128.0.0 mask will become 0.127.255.255
or 255.255.255.252 will become 0.0.0.3

So in your case the original mask of 255.255.252.0 thas changed to reverse
of 0.0.3.255

Doyle Chapter 7 Troubleshooting Question 1?

2001-01-09 Thread igor vilensky

The network is diagrammed in Fig.7-30
Respective routing tables are in Figs. 7-(31-33)
The question regards which subnets are unreachable.
All ethernet links are subnets of 172.168.13.0.
ether interface address for Router A is:
172.168.13.86/29, subnet address x.x.x.80/29
for B: 172.168.13.90/28, subnet address x.x.x.80/28
for C: 172.168.13.75/27, subnet address x.x.x.64/27
how does this affect routing?
the answer key only addresses issues of rip version 1
and 2 compatibility.
RTC subnet includes hosts 65-94, covering A and B
RTB subnet includes hosts 81-94, covering A
RTA subnet includes hosts 81-86
the config includes 'no ip classless' on all routers
does that play a role?
what role does longest-prefix rule play,
and, lastly, what about the fact that these subnets
are
directly connected to their respective routers?

thanks,

igor

regarding perquisites,
cisco used to give you a t-shirt and a leather wallet,
but now, they just give you a diploma and a wallet
card.
good luck,

exam topics for various cisco tests

2000-09-13 Thread Igor

i just got my CCNA
i noticed that the online networking academy curriculum
had detailed list of 60 topics to review for
CCNA test (not that i did), which did not appear on
the exam info at the www.cisco.com
cisco website's exam info contains a detailed list
for routing 2, and CCDA/DP tests.
however, the list of topics for the other 3 CCNP tests
is very sparse
additionally, there are some goals for CCIE written test, but no detailed topics or objectives.
i think it would be useful to obtain this, maybe
contact cisco, or if such thing is not available
come up with our own list.
let me know if you have any ideas/interest in this.

Forming online networking classics reading club

2000-09-13 Thread Igor

i am setting up a reading club to explore networking.
i think it will be a good way to stay focused on the
subject and accomplish a fair deal of learning.
i have copies of Comer's Internetworking with TCP/IP,
and Perlman's Interconnections.
Both are very good, Comer is outstanding in its
clarity, Perlman's is more indepth,
i would like to read them again, this time doing
exercizes, and discussing them
i heard good things about Cisco titles 'Routing with
TCP/IP', and 'Internet Routing Architecture'.
incidentally, there is a new volume of ' Routing with
TCP/IP' announced, anyone knows anything more about
it?
also, i would love to get with others and chew on
cisco documentation cd, i hope it will be more
digestible as a group effort to keep motivated.
we could probably setup a yahoo club and meet on
a regular basis in a chat room online.
let me know if anyone is interested.
igor vilensky, CCNA

Re: RouterSim

2000-09-13 Thread Igor

I have used Sybex CCNA prep version of RouterSim,
it is innacurate, you can go through all listed labs
in less than 10 hours, and it costs 100 bucks,
although
you can get a deal online.
I thought it was rather disappointing.
there is some functionality, so you can setup your own
lab exercizes, has anyone tried that?

Re: Class 2 Fast Ethernet repeater

so, would 1 bit time for fast ethernet be 1/100,000,000 seconds and 92 bit times 92/100,000,000 seconds?
igor

A bit time is the minimum width of a 1 pulse on a network medium.i.e. The first part of an ethernet preamble is a 64 bit on/off/on/off pattern to synchronizes recievers at the physical layer. Bit times vary by Physical/MAC layer protocols. i.e. 16mbps Token ring's bit time is 4 times shorter than 4mbps token ring because it transmits 4 times as much data in the same timeslot.Original Message FollowsFrom: John lay <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>Reply-To: John lay <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]Subject: Class 2 Fast Ethernet repeaterDate: Thu, 7 Sep 2000 01:47:21 -0700 (PDT)Guys,On the CCDA book it is mentioned that "Class 2 Fast Ethernet repeaters havea maximum delay of 92 bit times"Is this means that the maximum allowed delay is 92 bit per second ?What is!

Anything by Douglas Comer, his Internetworking with TCP/IP is recommended for CCIE.
A great intro book to the field is 'Computer Networks and Internets' by him.
