Re: Cat 1900 and Full Duplex

2000-05-25 Thread J Neib

Nevermind, I've discovered the answer. There used to be a model 1900C that
is half duplex only. That is the model most prevalent at our location.
That model is no longer available. The 1900 series now consists of the 1912
and 1924, both of which can do full duplex on their 10 meg ports. It turns
out that we have two of those, so I verified visually that the duplex
options is, in fact, in the port configuration section on the 1924 model.

Cat 1900 and Full Duplex

2000-05-25 Thread J Neib

Cisco's website documentation says that full duplex operation is available
on all ethernet and fastethernet ports. However, I have several 1900s and I
cannot see how to turn on full duplex operation on ethernet ports. The
fastethernet ports have an option under Port Configuration, but no such
setting exists for the 10baseT ports. There is also no mention when you
view the port whether it is running half or full, or if it autonegotiating.

Do only the new 1900 switches support full duplex on all ports?

Ah, I just read that RFC. I see now that with the new QoS features, the
nationality and specific lineage of the avian carrier is not entirely
relevant...unless it's a penguin.

I would say that depends on whether the avian carrier is African or
European. :-)

Because the CCNA is about 1000 times easier than the CCIE, which makes it a
nice entry level certification. That's like asking, "Why would anyone

You'll love this. The command to enable ip routing is "ip routing".

Re: Difference Between T1 & Frame relay

2000-05-22 Thread J Neib

Frame Relay refers to the data network that your provider uses to get data
from one endpoint to another. Inside their frame relay cloud, they usually
run ATM, but that's another matter entirely.

T-1 is a digital line that is used to access the frame relay network. so,
you have this:

Router --> CSU/DSU -(T-1)-(frame cloud)...

There are other options for accessing the frame cloud, but T-1 or a
fractional T-1 are the most common.

You could also have a T-1 point-to-point circuit and choose not to use frame
relay. In this case, you could use some other layer 2 encapsulation such as
HDLC or PPP. Your choice all depends on your needs and your budget.

Re: Local Director load balancing

2000-05-19 Thread J Neib

Perhaps he's referring to an Arrowpoint content-aware web switch, which is
now a Cisco box. :-) (Resistance is Futile)

The Arrowpoint switches can do load balancing using such criteria as he
mentioned. They are quite cool and they beat the heck out of anything Cisco
has. Which explains why Cisco is buying the company!

Go to www.arrowpoint.com to see the future of Cisco web switches. Now let's
just hope that Cisco doesn't screw up Arrowpoint's customer service
department. They are truly amazing.

Re: Intermittent Packet Loss

2000-05-19 Thread J Neib

Hmmm... we have 1900s, 2924XLs, 5000s, 5500s ,etc. And we have no problems
with our LAN.

10% packet loss is indicative of a problem, but I doubt it is the hardware.
Check the speed/duplex settings between the switch and the router. If they
are mismatched, especially if one side is full duplex and the other is half,
then you will certainly have problems.
