For NAT on version 11.3 it must be an ip plus IOS.

I believe NAT was built into IP only around the 12.1
 release

RE: Cisco Study Library for Sale [7:23047]

2001-10-22 Thread Will's e-mail

It is so nice to see the response from this caring and compassionate group.
I am so glad that I work in an industry with such helpful peers. I have
received I email in response and that said what I had wasn't worth anything.
That may be, I don't know anymore. I guess I would have to say that I have
been very under whelmed by the response.

Thanks for all the compassion and caring. I see it is much better to remain
a list lurker than let a real need be known to the community of routing
gods. I hope I respond to someone's need in a better fashion.

Sorry, but you folks really suck as human beings. You may be routing
geniuses or soon to be, but you aren't human beings.

At least that's how your massive lack of response to a wannabe one of your
own in need could be seen.

Thanks for opening my eyes to the lack of any sense of community in the
Cisco Groupstudy Community.

Ok. Here is the deal: June of 2000 I had a tumor removed from my brain. It
has caused me to not be able to move data from shorttrrm memory into
longterm storage. Stuff that was there is still there, I just need to spend
an increadable amount of time on something before it moves into longterm
storage. As you might imagine, this has had a very real impact on the
certification process. I won't say it's impossible for me to do, but it is
so difficult that thr ROI just isn't there. For example, it is nearly
impossible for me to memorize. So there goes the stuff neded to pass the OSI
portion of any exam.

So you folks on the list have an oppurtounity to help me recoup some of my
expenses while I figure out what I can do for a living. Please don't just
offer advise, got plenty of people doing that. I really need to get back as
much of the expense of the books as I can.

I have more available. If I don't get blasted off the list I will post the
remainder at some future date.

Thanks,

Will Sahli

Re: Is Sybex CCIE study guide good? [7:13951]

2001-07-27 Thread Mail

I agree. You cannot go wrong with Halabi and DoyleCaslow is also very
good. The bottom line is that there is no one book that will do it all. You
will need to read a variety of books, each with it's own merits. I would
start with Doyle/Halabi first and then move on to books such as Caslows.

I just finished the Caslow book and it was very good. I'm right in the
middle of Routing TCP/IP by Jeff Doyle and so far it is the best book I've
read. I have the Sybex book also and have put it down for the time being
and
concentrating on the Doyle and Halabi books. Then I will go and read the
Sybex as more of a refresher.

When I first read through the guide I thought it was not
 in-depth enough
but it seemed to cover most of the topics. After taking the
 exam, I
would judge the book a little better. You still need to
 read of *lot*
of other material, but this book would be a good supplement
 to your

I am trying to find an in-depth guide to pings. I notice with my sniffer
that when I issue a ping from my laptop that there are three requests for
 each reply. Is this normal?

Also I want to learn more about the TTL field. Do routers really only
decrement it by one as the packet passes through?

I just have a few questions about the nuts and bolts of this and probably
traceroute also, stuff that isn't in the normal books.

I have read the RFC and what I want is not there. I have also looked
around
CCO quite a bit, and haven't found anything, not that this means that the
 info is not there.

If anyone knows of a good book or on-line source, I would appreciate it.

 Strange problem here.

The serial interface are UP UP on both sides, but we are not able to ping
each other - even though directly connected. A debug ip ICMP on the
remote site shows the ping coming through and replying, but the reply
never
 gets back.
Also the remote site saw my router using CDP, but I do not see him.

 Any ideas??

I believe this is Telco related, but the line shows clean from the

I like Jeremy's answer. It seems like the permit all at the end makes
everything else except the denies redundant.

I have a familiar feeling that I'm going to be completely off on this one,
but hopefully the correct answer will be posted so I can figure out why.

As long as the correct deny statements are there, it seems to me that
the
other permit statements would be redundant when used with the permit
all
 statement at the end.

 access-list 101 deny ip 172.22.30.0 0.0.0.255 192.168.18.27 0.0.0.0
 access-list 101 deny ip 172.22.0.0 0.0.255.255 192.168.18.64 0.0.0.63
 access-list 101 permit ip 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.255 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.255

 Looking forward to the answer,

It's much cheaper then buying two 6 foot $65 cables to connect two routers
two feet appart on a rack. Send me an e-mail if you have trouble finding
Brad, but he's on the list, and by the way, a really good guy. Good luck.

Sure, copy tftp startup-config (which doesn't affect your running conifg).
Then next time it comes up, it uses the new startup config.

Most that I've seen do all sorts of DNS and DHCP

There are lots of good ones out there. Check out Lucent's QIP,
Checkpoint's NetID, and Cisco's Network Registrar to name a few. If
you search back issues of Network Computing, you'll find a couple of product

my head in aluminum foil, I eliminated the headaches and prevented them from
erasing the configs on my AGS. Are you, by chance, close to Langley?

On a more serious note, you may be more senstive to EM and RF than most
folks. If it persists, you should see your doctor and get it checked out.
You can reduce your exposure to the cell phone by using a headset which will
allow you to move the phone away from your head. Of course, if you put the
phone in your pocket and use it in this manner, that can cause another slew
of problems I won't get into...

I used it extensively, both the CCNA and CCIE sections which helped me in
passing
the R/S written exam last July. I suggest you read every tutorial and do
every practice
exam after the tutorial. If you have access to a lab, you might wish to do
the labs also.

I took the practice exam twice. the first time, I was a long way from being
in a position
to pass the real exam. the second time I took it I was within 5 points.
That was at the
end of June prior to my attending Networkers in Orlando.

Again, for me it was money well spent. You have the benefit of gleaning
some knowledge
from a number of networking heavyweights such as Pricilla Oppenheimer and
Howard C.
Berkowitz. There is a new tutorial/exam/lab every month on a wide variety
of subjects.

I periodically take the practice R/S exam for review and to keep sharp.
Once I pass the lab
next year, I'll continue using certificationzone for when I have to
recertify.

You'll still need to use the Cisco web site; particularly the
internetworking guides and the
usual Doyle/Caslow/Halabit complement of books and I might also suggest the
CCIEprep
study guide by the Rossi family.

Hope this help..dj

Halfway through the test I was starting to get upset because the
questions
were vague to say the least..but if you have studied
hard and know your show and debug commands you'll be OK. Cisco really
shouldn't require you to sign a NDA for this exam, who in
their right mind could remember these weird questions?? :-) Here is how
I
 passed:

Used the Cisco-Press CIT book (OK)
Used the exam cram book. (also OK)
Used Boson test #2 (helpful, I reccommend it)
Used Priscilla's flash cards (very helpful)

Here's how I rate the exams from 1 to 10 with 10 being the most
difficult:
  CCNA - 4
  ACRC - 7
  BCMSN - 5
  BCRAN - 5
  Support - 6

I consider myself a CCNP Version 1.75 because of the ACRC test. I know
that makes me only a 1.0 so I'll probably take BSCN to get to
2.0. Oh well, I'll take it.

I've read *alot* of study books during this process and here are two

Also, could you give the exact titles of those other three books that you

 Hello all,

This is a brief synopsis of my ccie lab and the tools I used to study. If
you're not interested you may want to just hit the delete key now.

I just thought that I would take a few moments to share my study
methodology
for the CCIE lab. I've been meaning to do this since I passed the lab on
November 15th in San Jose, but I always seem to get sidetracked with all
of
my newfound free time. This was my first attempt at the lab and I found
it
to be fairly straight forward. It wasn't as convoluted as I expected and
I
had seen pretty much everything before.

 Day 1

The first thing that I did was read through the entire lab TWICE. I
realized that I knew how to do everything and went to work on my diagram.
I
found day one to be very easy and was done by 2 o'clock. I checked and
re-checked all of my work and felt very confident in everything that I had
done. After that I spent time making sure that ALL of my information was
recorded correctly and neatly on my diagram. I felt very confident when
I
left, but I have to admit as I tried to get some sleep the what if's were
 creeping in my mind.

 Day 2

I arrived for Day 2 happy to see the Day 2 binder on my desk and went
through the same process of reading the entire lab twice. I realized that
I
knew exactly what to do on 90% of the lab and may have to browse the cd
for
the other 10%. Again, I found that there was plenty of time and I had
completed everything that I knew how to do by 10:30. I spent the next 30
minutes reviewing the cd and configuring the remaining 10%. I then
re-read
everything and checked over all of my work and made sure that my diagram
was
complete. Documentation is very important in the lab not only for
troubleshooting, but to ensure that the proctor can see what you were
doing.
The proctor spends all day at the lab and then has to check your work in
the
evening or at lunch for day 2. The last thing he wants to do is spend 30
minutes trying to read your diagram. Of course, this is just my opinion.

After day 2, I felt real good about my work, but nervous none the less.
This made for what seemed like a never ending lunch. Once we arrived back
at the facility I was called first and on the way back to the lab I was
told
that I had made it to troubleshooting and that I had three hours. When I
returned to my desk I found the paperwork for troubleshooting and for the
first time found out how many points I had. I had gained 70 of the 75
points and only needed 10 of the 25 from troubleshooting. At that point,
I
knew that I had passed and just needed to knock out the troubleshooting.
As
I looked around I realized that no one else had progressed from Day 2. I
spent about an hour and a half on troubleshooting and felt like I fixed
everything so I turned in my sheet. About 5 minutes later, the proctor
returned with a yellow sticky note with my number on it. He then asked me
if I would erase all of my configs and then I left with a huge grin on my
face. I just couldn't believe that all of my studying paid off.

I met Chuck Larrieu a few hours later for a victory dinner. I knew that
it
would be nice to have some company one way or the other and I was glad
that
it turned out to be for good reasons.

Passing the test was very rewarding, but the journey was just as
rewarding.
It's amazing the amount of material that you learn along the way and the
many friends that you make. I have become friends with many people that I
may of never met if I wasn't studying for the CCIE.

 Study Materials

I studied the normal books Caslow, Halabi, and Doyle and found them all to
be very helpful. I also used three other books extensively that I don't
see
mentioned very often. I used the configuring cisco routers for bridging,
dlsw+, desktop protocols and the Cisco Press Lan Switching Book. I
found
them both to be very helpful as I work extensively with cisco routers and
rarely use cisco switches. I also used the CCIEBootcamp labs which I
found
to be an excellent resource for practice. There are a lot of other labs,
 but most of them

We generally have a class C range set aside for loopbacks for most customers
with networks of any size. I can only think of one reason to not assign it
as a host route (ip with 255.255.255.255 mask), and that's for policy
routing (required when you're doing NAT Pools + Static NATs + VPN so that
your Static NATs can hop around the VPN tunnel to the outside interface).

Two routers in an OSPF share the highest priority. To break the tie and
determine the DR, OSPF looks at router id, which is the highest interface
address (let's say serial interface) and determines a particular router
has
the highest id. It becomes DR. Without a loopback address, if the serial
interface goes down, then the BDR comes online and a new BDR election
takes
place. This requires processing power and could slow down the network.
With a loopback interface configured with the highest IP address, then if
a
router is the DR and looses its serial interface, it would remain the DR.
 Is this correct?

My second question involves the configuration of the loopback from
real-world experience. What do most of you use - an address from the same
subnet one of the interfaces is on or a seperate address?

Subject: Re: question about loopback interfaces

The notes I have here suggest that using a loopback interface provides a
more stable interface than a physical interface. As the loopback
interface
is up as long as the RAM is working the chances of losing this interface
are
 greatly reduced.

Both OSPF and BGP use the highest active IP address as the router ID. If
a
loopback address is configured they will use the loopback address.
Therefore the loopback address provides more stability.

It can also make network management and troubleshooting tasks easier.

Hmmm... My kids could go for some Sesame Street certs:

SSCEF Sesame Street Certified Elmo Fanatic
SSCCMA Sesame Street Certified Cookie Monster Afficionado
SSCSGE Sesame Street Certified Super Grover Emulator
SSCKTFAS "" Certified Kermit the Frog Alphabet Sayer

My twin girls could nail all of these certs no problem... I hear that they
are working on a certification with Bert and Ernie which would involve a lab
