Case Sensitive Passwords on Cisco IOS CLI [7:4718]

2001-05-17 Thread Marco P Rodrigues

According to the book written by Karen Webb on page 65 it states
that passwords on Cisco Swtiches using the Cisco IOS CLI AREN'T case
sensitive, while passwords on the Cisco Switches using the set/clear CLI
don't. I've tried this out myself and it seems to be both case sensitive.
I've tried it on a 5505 and 2924. Is this a typo? I've looked for an
errata on www.ciscopress.com and couldn't find anything..

And clarification would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Switch Classification [7:6412]

2001-05-30 Thread Marco P Rodrigues

May be a question already answered many times, but I was just
curious to what classification a switch falls under? Is it usually
referred to as a DCE or a DTE. I would think a DCE because when you connect
a Switch(DCE) to a
ROUTER (DTE, could be DCE) you use a straight. When connecting Switch(DCE)
to Switch/Hub(DCE) you use a crossover. Could someone elaborate on this
issue? Is my train of
though wrong on this one? The only reason I'm asking is because I've never
read anyone refer to it as a DCE, a better question is can it be reffered
to as one?

Another question (may be a little off topic from this discussion group)
does anyone out there know a *nix platform that supports EtherChannel? I
know Data ONTAP for Netapps support it, but I just wanted to know if there
are any *nix that do.

Thanks group.

Connecting Two 3548XL's with GigaEthernet [7:9098]

2001-06-19 Thread Marco P Rodrigues

I recently accquired two 3548XL's I want to connect both via giga
ethernet. The problem I'm facing is that the link light will go up on one,
but not on the other. I had the TX/RX ports reversed ie RX going to the TX
on the other switch and vice versa. I configured both 0/1 modules with no
negoiation auto, and duplex full. When I bring an interface up say on
3548XL-A and 3548XL-B, the A comes up, the B comes up but goes down right
away. The link light stays up on the 3548XLA. When I switch the cables
around (multi mode fiber) the opposite happens. IE. B interace comes up,
and A goes down. I can't provide configs right now, but I will in a few
hours (I'm not at home right now). I've tried different fiber cables and
no go. I know for a fact they work. If anyone who has this type of config
or knows how I should tackle it could drop me a line, I would appreciate
it.

RE: Connecting Two 3548XL's with GigaEthernet [7:9098]

2001-06-20 Thread Marco P Rodrigues

Actually I got it working. SOMEONE at work here told me the cable I was
using was good, and when I asked for another one he gave me another fiber
cable which was sitting on a computer (without the caps on). Anyways, I
got a new fiber cable (with the caps still protecting the fiber ends) and
both interfaces came up.

Thanks for the replies.

Possible Errata Additions: CCIE(TM): Cisco Certified [7:74091]

2003-08-18 Thread Marco P. Rodrigues
Edition
By Rob Payne; Kevin Manweiler

If someone is reading this book can they confirm some inconsistencies
I've come across while reading the book. I'm currently on Chapter 7
and I've found the following problems (at least I think they are
problems)

Pg 98.

Paragraph Five last sentence reads:

"DTE devices include terminals, PCs, routers, and bridges
(customer-owned end node and internetworking devices) and DTE devices
are devices such as packet switches"

Shouldn't it read:
".. and DCE devices are devices such as packet switches"

Pg. 193.

Figure 6.1 Bit 46 should read U/L and not I/G as listed in bit 47.

Pg. 194

Figure 6.2 (Ethernet II Frame)

Sync (Pattern 11) should read 2 bits and not "11 bits"

Pg. 207

set port duplex 2/10 full is issued in the config but the show port
output lists the duplex speed as being half. All the other config
changes match up with the output.

Pg. 223 (Explanation of the command channel-group 1 mode desirable)

Should read PAgP and not DTP.

I've come across more , a few matched up with the Errata on Sybex's
website. I just haven't been keeping track. I guess I'll start noting
mistakes as I find them.

If someone can confirm this with me I would appreciate it, and I'm
sure the authors would too.

RE: Possible Errata Additions: CCIE(TM): Cisco Certifi [7:74184]

2003-08-19 Thread Marco P. Rodrigues
I was hoping someone from the publishing company or even an author
would have read my message. An author did and confirmed these errors
and several more. I figured they were wrong just wanted to
confirm. Just scary to think if mistakes like this are made on
material I understand imagine stuff I'm actually trying to learn.

.:probably have truly found some mistakes that you should report to the
.:publisher. By the way, is the book good otherwise? The Amazon reviews look
.:positive.

Seems adequate so far. I'll find out if it's a great book if I pass my
test on Monday. :)
