Anyone know how to reset the enable password on a 5000 series switch when

Re: OT: IRR Why?

2000-11-15 Thread Martin-Guy Richard

Hi John,

I had the same question as yours. I did not get an answer, so what I did is the "So be
it" approach.

You will need an ASN (Autonomous System Number) and what you need to do is get it from
ARIN. Once you have it from Arin, you can register your Routing Object (Maintainet,
AS,
and so on) through ARIN and it doesn't cost a dime. I don't know what is the
difference
between having your object in an IRR and not having your object there, but I did it
anyway, I learned how it works...so be it!

BGP Problem

2000-11-01 Thread Martin-Guy Richard

Hi Group,

Anybody heard about Endless BGP Convergence Problem in Cisco IOS
Software Releases. I am multihomed to two ISP. My two routers speak to each other
with
iBGP. And one of my routeur, that is version Version 12.1(1)E3, EARLY DEPLOYMENT
RELEASE SOFTWARE, kept receiving BGP UPDATE from its iBGP peer at every 60 seconds. I
have all the symptoms described in the document below, but I don't accept MED and I
don't have route reflector neither do I have confederation...I only have two router, I
don't need route reflector or confederation...do I?

My friend, maybe you got a power spike (I don't know how to call it in english!), a
voltage peak, just as
you pressed enter. No joke, it happened to me just this week. We moved, everything

UPS (because it died!). When I opened the door to the Switch room, BEEP BEEP BEEP,
Reboot...huh? So I
bought a UPS right away.

Look at the power, there may be to much peak! Maybe!

Re: BGP question - Multihoming

2000-09-21 Thread Martin-Guy Richard

Thank you Chuck, I got the BGP "Bible" and read page 354.

And as your previous advice, the (the provider) will advertise my /23 so I am
kind of lucky on that side. And since the bulk of my traffic is coming out of
my AS, what comes in will only be some kind of request.

Thank you.

Are those really CCIE type of questions?

BGP question - Multihoming

2000-09-15 Thread Martin-Guy Richard

I have a tricky version for you guys:

I am multihomed to two provider. I got a /23 from Provider1. I
announce my /23 two Provider1 and Provider2. Since my /23 comes from
Provider1, he is supposed to aggregate in in is /16 CIDR. But, I have
to announce my /23 to my other provider. Somebody told me that the
longest prefix becomes something of a traffic magnet (or something like
that). So, all of my traffic would come from Provider2 and not
Provider1. How is it so, since BGP use aggregation?

I don't understand!

Re: Subnet Calc/Database tool?????

2000-09-07 Thread Martin-Guy Richard

Hello Bmurphy,

I got one yesterday.

Go to solarwinds.net and download their FREE subnet calculator. You can save
everything in a txt file, it is pretty nifty.

http://solarwinds.net/tools/free_tools/Subnet%20Calc/index.htm

That's it for today.

Re: what is dark fiber?

2000-09-05 Thread Martin-Guy Richard

Hi,
Dark fiber

Dark fiber is optical fiber infrastructure (cabling and repeater) that
is currently in place but is not being used. Optical fiber conveys information
in the form of light pulses so the "dark" means no light pulses are being
sent. Dark fiber can refer to infrastructure that is in place but not yet
ready to use. For example, some electric utilities have installed optical
fiber cable where they already have power lines installed in the expectation
that they can lease the infrastructure to telephone or cable TV companies
or use it to interconnect their own offices. To the extent that these installations
are unused, they are described as dark.
"Dark fiber service" is service provided by local exchange carriers
(local exchange carrier) for the maintenance of optical fiber transmission
capacity between customer locations in which the light for the fiber is
provided by the customer rather than the LEC.

I took that definition on www.whatis.com:

bahadir korkmaz wrote:
hi.
what is dark fiber?
i found some sites that says dark fiber means unused fiber.
is it so?
i think dark fiber must be different then unused fiber.
i mean for example. 10gigabit ethernet runs on dark fiber.
dark must be something related to bandwidth or wavelength.
if someone knows dark fiber definition i ll be happy.
