RE: token ring rj45 to db9 cabling [7:53860]

2002-09-24 Thread Munoz, Michael

When I made filters for my token ring routers to my 3900 I used this link as
a reference:

http://www.walshcomptech.com/ohlandl/NIC/TR-cable.html

The pins we are worried about on the 9pin D plug end are 1,5,6, and 9.
The pins on the rj45 side are 3,4,5, and 6.

9pin 1 = rj pin 5
9pin 5 = rj pin 6
9pin 6 = rj pin 4
9pin 9 = rj pin 3

Okay, I give up. I can't seem to get this to work. I've tried various
adapters (self-done) and I'm stuck. I have a 2502 and I don't have the
rj-45 to db9 adapter, and I need to fabricate one. Does anyone know the
pinout colors that will work with a Cisco 2502?

I thought it was 1-red 5-black 6-green 9 -orange (on the db9 to rj45
adapter), but lately I've been thinking it might be: 1-green,5-black, 6-red,
9-orange

Or perhaps I've got a bad db9 port on my 2502? I have a known good rj45
token ring mau/lam. It works when it connects to servers/workstations that
have rj-45 ports on their token ring cards, but not with my "home-made"
rj-45 adapter for my Cisco router.

Can anyone assist? Thanks in advance.

Since I noticed a plug for another company I'll throw in my 2 cents.

I'm not sure what services you are looking for but we offer quite a few and
have a good global presence. While most company's are in piles of debt, we
have a surplus of cash. Even after making acquisitions such
as Exodus, we still sit on top.

I know this probably isn't the best forum, but I thought I'd post it here
since I'm sure some of you guys have insight and opinions...

I've seen so many problems in the carrier market in the last few years that
I'm no longer sure who to trust when they tell me that they're financially
stable.

Global Crossing is very weak. We all know about WorldCom/UUNET. Qwest is
struggling.

Who, in your experience, is still a stable, major player in the US carrier
/ dedicated transmission market?
Genuity?
AT&T?
Cable and Wireless?
Time Warner Telecom?

Who would be your first choice for carrier in today's economy?

RE: Carrier Transitions : Any Comments [7:30829]

2002-01-03 Thread Munoz, Michael

I have worked on the telco side and as you can imagine, this happens a bit..
At least you were working with the telco.. You don't know how many people
would refuse to change anything..
Did the problem clear after telco testing or after you replaced the wire?
That will tell you where the problem was.. I'm curious, how did you know
the carrier transitions were within 24 hours? Had you experienced the
bouncing and cleared the counters the previous day? If so, those were the
only errors you received?
For a T1, telco will usually run QRSS, 1's and 0's.. DDS, 2047, 1's and
SP5.. More can be run of course but generally not, from my experience..
I remember I used to see a common problem with a certain 12.0x version and
2600 with WIC-1DSU-T1 (imagine trying to tell someone to change their
IOS)

Subject: Carrier Transitions : Any Comments [7:30829]

My networking skills are apparently being tested these days, because the
frame relay circuit went down to one of my branch offices.

I got someone at the local office to telnet into the router, which was
down/down, and the LMI was down/down, and there were just under 10 carrier
transitions in the last 24 hours.

I had them powercycle the router without any luck.

I concluded that my provider was most likely the cause of the problem, and
that it was at the branch office circuit, since my router here was talking
fine with the other two remote offices, and my LMI was up/up.

My provider told me that the circuit was bouncing, or in other words, it had
been going down and back up several times since yesterday evening.

After several hours, they did an out of service test, where they told me
that it had tested dirty to the CSU but clean to the SmartJack, so they were
going to put it on hold until I had replaced the WAN cable and reseated the
WIC-1DSU-T1 card in the 1720 router.

I went out to the branch office and did that, and the PVC has after I
powered it on been up for about an hour now.

My question now is:

Is this (A) a normal thing that you suddenly have to reseat the WIC and/or
replace the WAN cable, and that it can cause carrier transitions, or is this
more likely (B) my provider that has found and corrected the error on their
site, but now is trying to make it look like it was my equipment that was
faulty, or (C)

Thanks for any comments to this,

Ole

Thanks for the response.. I know the router is able to run at 10mbs.. I'm

that trunking is only possible at 100mbs.. I'm thinking that since the Cat

I also feel that url's are more useful than someone who just responds with a

Here is the link for configuring Frame Relay as provided by Cisco:

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/software/ios120/12cgcr/wan_c

Here is the link for configuring your T1 WIC card:

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/software/ios120/12cgcr/inter

You may want to ask your carrier more questions for your WIC card... This
is a full T1? If so, who will provide the timing? On our network it would
be you, on some networks the carrier would provide the timing for you. I'm
assuming your T1 is ESF which is usually the case but these are things they
should tell you.

Hope this helps... I prefer emails with links for learning purposes, if you

RE: Frame relay and dropped packets... [7:4529]

2001-05-15 Thread Munoz, Michael

You need to look at multiple factors when checking for dropped traffic. You
say forget DE and such but this is actually important when checking for this
type of information. Discard Eligible packets are not guaranteed to cross
the pvc. Do you know what your CIR rate is from your carrier? They only
guarantee this amount.. If you send over this amount for an extended amount
of time (which many customers do) then you can definitely lose traffic..

Like someone already mentioned, clear you counters on both ends and monitor.
You may also want to do extended pings based on your pvc size during a time
when traffic on your system is low.

Hi all,

We have reason to believe we are experiencing Dropped packets
between us and our remote branch. What I need
Is proof, so I can go to my manager and say, "here, look at this". He
believes just because he looks at the router and does a "show frame pvc" and
the Dropped Pkts statistic is 0, that there are no packets being dropped.
Logical Assumption, but I've been told that just isn't the case. Let me
throw this out to the groupForget about the FECN's, BECN's and the DE
pkts...If you were to telnet to both routers and look at the statistics of
the point-to-point DLCI and compare the Output pkts on one end to the Input
pkts on the other end, and if you see a discrepancy of 500,000correct me
if I'm wrong here, but wouldn't that symbolize Dropped packets???Thanks!

RE: Frame-Relay Sub interface question [7:4432]

2001-05-14 Thread Munoz, Michael

All you should really need from the carrier is the pvc information, and even
then you should be able to see the local dlci's with inverse arp.. You will
also want to know the LMI type, we always use ANSI unless specifically
requested. Some of you may think that the new version of Cisco IOS detects
the LMI type automatically but I have seen this not happen on more then on
occasion!

Also, configuring your dlci for IETF is only when you are connecting a cisco
router on one end of the circuit and some other vendor's router on the other
end. It doesn't matter what the Frame Relay switches are.

I'm also wondering about you using Frame Relay to access the internet and
not HDLC but that was not your question...

Here is more info about configuring frame relay from Cisco:

Nope. You'll have your DLCI's anyway, and that's really it. You could ask
them if they've got Cisco FR switches at both ends so you know if you need
to configure 'encap frame IETF' or can leave it to the default using Cisco
FR encapsulation (allows for more options, especially with VoIP/FR), but
that won't really affect a simple FR Data network.

interfaces.. Voice, ATM.
I'm thinking:
2511
2620 with 2-port fxs int card
2610 with 2-port fxs int card - I'm wondering if these also need the Voice
interface cards...
2504 - tokenring and BRI
2503 - BRI
Catalyst 5000 or 2901

I was hoping to do ATM.. Maybe instead of the 2600's, use 3620 or 40 and
add Single-port 155-mbps ATM OC-3 MNM to each with a Lightspeed 1010.
(dreaming? I'm guessing the above modules will not be the optimal match.)
2 tokenring mau's..
We actually have 2 ISDN lines I hope to incorporate as well for the ISDN.

Any criticism/help would be appreciated. If this is the dumbest thing you
have ever seen, let me know... That is why I'm asking for help!!

Subject: Killing a console

When I was messing around with my lab, I telnetted from my 3640 to my 2501
and changed the ip on the 2501 interface I was connected on and it of course
killed my connection. It did not exit me back to the 3640's prompt though. I
can log in on the aux port and see that the console is still active, but is
there a way to kill the console? I know I could turn the router off, but
then I wouldn't learn anything. I could also put a timeout on the EXEC
session. Any other suggestions?

Thanks,
Joey Fowler

RE: O/T Digital Cross Connect

2000-10-31 Thread Munoz, Michael

For the first question:

Digital cross-connect systems (DCSs) have been used for several years to
manage the digital DS0, DS1, and DS3 channels between switches--the
intermachine trunks. Digital cross-connect systems provide a termination
point for backbone trunks in the local and long distance network. A variety
of DCS products can terminate DS1 and/or DS3 trunks, copper or fiber, and
cross-connect channels within them. Through this cross-connect arrangement,
end-to-end circuits can be established at speeds ranging from 2.4 Kbps to
44.736 Mbps. Using manual reconfiguration commands, circuits can be rerouted
by establishing new cross-connect paths at one or more local or remote DCSs.

DCSs are planned for deployment in the local loop to provide the same
level of control for customer access circuits. In this case, customer access
circuits would terminate on a central office DCS where individual data,
voice, or video paths would be cross-connected to the appropriate local
service equipment or intermachine trunk.
DCS provides centralized operations, administration, management, and
provisioning capabilities to the carrier. This includes facility and
performance monitoring, loopback testing, and alarm generation and
processing.

Once a circuit is defined via cross-connected channels, the DCS is
transparent to data flow. The DCS can be considered an electronic version of
a manual patch panel. The DCS also can support a dual path capability
between two DCSs. These self-healing services all function in the same
manner. When a DS3, for example, enters a DCS, the signals it carries can be
sent out on two separate transmission paths to their destination. At the
destination DCS, the best signal is selected for delivery to the customer. A
failure in one path will generate alarms, allowing repair and restoration to
occur while customer service continues uninterrupted on the other path.

I have a few questions to ask .

1st what exactly is a digital cross connect i know it had to do with
sonet/sdh but i need a better explanation on this or a good web site /

2nd what is the normal address block providers allow you to advertise from
CIDR. IF anyone can provide this information it would be greatly appreciated

RE: Total number of CCNP's worldwide?

2000-10-26 Thread Munoz, Michael

Someone just sent this on the 22nd Do you read the emails sent through
groupstudy? I don't know if the numbers are correct but then again does it
really matter??

Here is the email that was sent.

Hi

I spotted this on the alt.certification.cisco list this AM and thought I
would forward it here since the question has been asked s many times. In
a follow up post asking where he got these figures, his reply was from his
network academy instructor.
