Re: EIGRP [7:49678]

2002-07-25 Thread Oleg Oz

I had a conversation with a cisco engineer about why there are so many
undocumented commands. He basically told me that before a command is
documented it needs to be documented (no pun intended) by the engineer, this
as it turns out is not as easy as it would sounds. There is a process that
needs to be completed on the engineers side that documents all possible
output, provides debugs and command syntax in all possible compinations. The
fact that this is so time consuming many engineers avoid doing it!

RE: VLAN Trunk Protocol [7:49647]

2002-07-25 Thread Oleg Oz

VTP - is only used to disseminate information among switches in the
same VTP domain - or manage VLAN configurations. Setting a switch as a
server allows you to add/delete/modify VLAN's from that switch for the
entire VTP domain. If the VTP domain server dies :( no problem, your domain
will be fine, however you will not be able to perform your
add/deletes/modifys on that domain. This can be remedied by making another
switch a SERVER.

 Hope that answers you question.

Sorry,
I should have been more clear. What I meant to say was the CCIE Power
Session Manual - you get this when you attend the CCIE power session at
Networkers (Cisco's networking event)

Yes, I meant the book that you get when you attend the CCIE Power Session.
My company did not want to pay for it either, until I said I would pay for
it myself. Go figure, beside 450 bucks is nothing with respect to the
information that you get out of it!

Frank,

Like you I did not study for the beta exam (I wanted to know what it
was all about and not loose 300 bucks.) I have not received my graded beta
exam yet not did I expect to pass (however if the pass grade was 45, I may
have passed.) You are on target with saying that the current exam was much
easier (mostly becasue the beta had newly added subjects that I have no
practical experiance with.)

BTW: I highly recommend attending the PS session (or atleast trying to
get your hand on a copy of the PS CCIE book)

2002-06-29 Thread Oleg Oz

I wanted to drop a line to the group and thank everyone for adding
thier 2 cents! I mean it! Having other folks point out potential issues/uses
of a specific technology really helps fill in the picture. So Thanks again!

I took the beta (351-001) exam at the beginging of May (have not
recived the officialy graded exam yet) and did not feel like I passed so I
took the current exam (350-001) at networkers and passed !!!

I spoke with another person at Prometric. She basically said dont count
your chickens before they hatch. Also, she said they sometimes put a P in
there just for giggles and . (pardon my periods)

So, if you took the test out of curiosity and never expected to pass you
probably did'nt. :(

CCIE beta results [7:45853]

2002-06-05 Thread Oleg Oz

I took the CCIE beta exam at the begining on May (a day beofore the
end) and could wait no more. I called prometric to see if they had a grade
in thier system, they told me that thier system showed a "P" for pass (I
called twice to confirm.) Cisco's system does not show anything yet (I know
it can take up to ten days to show up.) Now, I still do not belive that I
passed (until I have the printed copy in my hand) and wanted to check with
the group to see if anyone else had this experience. That is, not getting
the official results and calling prometric to get the results (and the
finding out the the info prometric had was not correct.

 Thanks
 Oleg.

One more thing I forgot to mention. If a Client is powered off and
disconnected (physicaly) from the network and then powered on. The client
will retain the last known VTP domain/VLAN configuration.

RE: Not the whole domain - Re: Delete VLAN [7:37254]

2002-03-05 Thread Oleg Oz

I belive that the part about a VTP client not saving VLAN information
is not correct. Yes, a client gets updates from the VTP server and Yes
"changes" (add, delete, mods) can only be initaited on a server. But, I belive
that the client does save the most current revision of the VTP domain config
in memory. Also, If a VTP server reloads and some how loses (or has cleared)
its VLAN info but retains the VTP domain configuration and its revision
number somehow is lower than a clients revision, the server will accept
config the VLAN conifguration from the client.

Atleast that is what I think/remember.

RE: Ethernet or FastEthernet [7:35245]

2002-02-14 Thread Oleg Oz

Mike, yes the IEEE802.1Q does insert the VLAN tag into the frame (ISL
encapsulates the frame.) I am going to try and get this part right. The max
frame size for an ethernet frame is 1518, however if you are going to insert
the 801.1Q Vlan tag you would require an additional 4 bytes.

 2 bytes for Length/Type = 802.1Q Tag Type
2 bytes for Tag Control Information)

Bringing the grand total to 1522. I belive that the older chip sets
supported a max of 1518 (later the standard was changed to support 1522.)
So, I belive that the age on the hardware has a bit to do with this as the
change to the frame size (or the IEEE standard change) did not occur until
sometime in '98.

Now Cisco's ISL came along and decided to take it a bit further.
Cisco's implementation encapsulates the frame (the original 1518 byte frame)
and by doing so adds 30 more bytes. This 1548 byte max. frame again presents
a problem to older Ethernet chip sets.

So you may find certine Ethernet HW that will support the 1522 byte
size and not the 1548 byte size (I am pretty sure of this but will not swear
to it) and hence some hardware will support 802.1Q and not ISL.

I hope I am not wrong about this.

RE: Ethernet or FastEthernet [7:35245]

2002-02-13 Thread Oleg Oz

I also belive that it is possible to run isl/802.1Q over ethernet. I
seem to remember reading that the limiting factor was the age of the
ethernet hardware. The originally ethernet chips used in cisco network
modules only supported a fixed frame size. When ISL/802.1Q came along, the
hardware needed to support some additional space to accomadate the VLAN
info. This was a problem with older ethernet chips sets however the newer
hardware supports this. The chip sets used on the FE board did not have this
problem because they were already designed to allow for a larger frame.

 Can anyone verify my recollection???
