I agree - do the CCNPget your MBA. There is a glut of Cisco people at
the moment - no matter what country your are in. The MBA would probably be a
better choice in the long term - anyways, once you attain your CCNP level
(or CCIP) and you keep your skills current by practicing regularly you
should still be OK for the CCIE further down the track.

BTW - Tim? Drop the 'CCIE Written' 'bit' from you acronym collection...it
ain't cool no more :)

My suggestion is to get your DP and NP and see if you like it, if you
have time. Then you can make a more educated decision. Certainly, if you
have access to most/all of the routers and switches that are in the CCIE
lab page exam, then it would be good to take advantage of your
 situation.

As far as availability of jobs and such, I don't know this
 information.

Well, now you know why so many people think all the Cisco written certs
are
 not very valuable at all.

Only the CCIE (the lab) continues to hold reasonable weight, and even that
has been tarnished to some degree by all these bootcamps and such.

  Hi All,
I took the Cisco PIX CSPFA exam yesterday and I was
suprised to find out that my score is 970/1000. I've
never worked with any type of firewalls let alone PIX
Firewall. I read the CSPFA book and borrowed the
materials from a friend of mine who went to global
knowledge training a few weeks earlier. I am very
disappointed with the exam. I don't think anyone like

myself should be able to pass the exam that easily.

I thought yesterday's test score was a fluke so this
morning I went and took the MCNS exam and I got a
  score
of 960/1000. I was completely shocked. A few hours,
  I
decide to sign up for the CCIE written exam.
  Amazingly
I passed with a score of 92/100 That is unbelievable.
To pass the exam for someone like myself really
de-value the prestige of Cisco Certification by some
bookworms like me. Cisco, after all, should make the
exam a lot harder than the way it is now.

Anyone care to comment on this.

Re: CCIE starting pay [7:33899]

2002-01-31 Thread Oliver Nadalin

I agree with everything said so far...what needs to change is the way
Microsoft, and now Cisco and most training providers and study guide
publishers advertise the IT industry as a way of making the 'big bucks' -
the only people making the big bucks are these guys. People looking for a
career change read the hype about how much money can be made becoming an
MCSE, CCNA etc so they take courses, study guides, practice exams - with no
experience - get the cert then all of a sudden the industry is flooded.

I'd like to see something like what Compaq does with the ASE - you can only
get the cert if you are working for a Compaq partnerthis would really
cut down on the amount of paper certified people. A little heavy handed but
i think for the best in the long term - at least protects the integrity of
the certification industry and the industry in general.

Guy wrote in message

A CCIE With no work experience

I think most employers would shy away from that! A CCNP, or CCNA possible,
but CCIE... Im not sure. That would be like a Brain surgeon with no work
experience... WHat would you pay him to operate on your brain

Makes you think eh??? I think your best bet is to get a job as a CCNP or
CCNA, get a year or two experience (Minimum) then worry about CCIE. Maybe
work some other certs in there too, like Unix or maybe Microsoft or
something to round you out a bit more and make some opportunities in the
market for yourself... Or firewalls, and or something like tripwire etc...

My point is, If you have a CCNA, CCNP, CCIE, and 50 other certifications
behind your name, and no work experience, poeple are going to know you are
a
good test taker, but you will still be starting off at the bottom. With a
salary range of maybe 30-50k But that CCIE is not going to make it 100k no
matter what your cousins brother or whatever told you. All the
certifications are for is to take someone who has the experience, and
skills, and gives them something they can use as proof of their expertise.

It is not for an entry level person to get so they can get a higher start
pay... All that does is cheapen the cert.

Look at the MCSE. Back when I took my MCSE, that cert gave me credibility.
I
walked out of every interview with an offer. I could make my own choices.
I
took my MCSE after several years of workwith Net systems including Novell,
IBM OS/2, and Microsoft. It was more of a proof of my skill set. Not a
proof
I can read Brain Dumps, and hope I will do ok if someone gives me the
 chance...

Now days you mention MCSE, and what goes through your mind??? Thats right
 Worthless.

 Now why is that?

Its because people with no skills heard of someone who became an MCSE, and
started making 70k or whatever... Then that person decided, Hey, I can
do that And found Transcenders etc... Became an M CSE, but cant even
 copy files to a floppy

This happened on a large scale, and soon employers were hiring worthless
 MCSEs, and were getting frustrated...

Now, in the IT industry, it has become a low level Cert... TO me that
ticks
me off. Ive been an MCSE since 96, and mine is prrof of the pudding
not
 a piece of paper...

Now, Cisco is becoming the same way. Look at how many people are becoming
CCNP...CCNA...etc... How many of those people could configure a medium
level
 network lab without the directions

How many could trouble shoot their way out of a paper bag

If people dont try to really learn the systems, all certifications will be
no better than a 3rd grade diploma!

sorry for my soap box, just really feel people take these things the wrong
way If people dont wake up, then all of this is for nothing...

I would not be happy spending a couple thousand dollars to get a 3rd grade
 diploma

The thing that is killing me is the line BGP activity 173/1013 prefixes,
205/190 paths, scan interval 15 secs. What exactly do these fields
indicate? I do not think that they are send/receive on the BGP activity
because the fields are populated on a router which I cleared the BGP
process
and the session never left Active state, so no routes were sent/received.
As for the scan interval, I think it has something to do with the BGP
command #bgp scan-time , but I am not sure what changes in this field will
 do? Any help please!?!?

 Thanks!

why we need spanning tree protocol per vlan

If you have a large, switched network, all the switches are in the same
spanning tree. Converging the spanning tree can take a long time. In
addition, traffic flow may not be optimized. The selection of the root
bridge and which interfaces are blocking might not be optimized for all
the
applications and devices in the large, switched network.

With per-VLAN spanning tree, each VLAN becomes a single spanning tree with
its own root bridge and own set of blocked ports. This way you can
optimize
traffic flow and reduce the amount of work to converge to a spanning tree.
It's somewhat analogous to dividing a routed network into areas or
 autonomous systems.

Also, at least with Catalyst 1900 switches, if you allow all VLANs to
travel across both trunks, you will have a loop. If you don't configure
per-VLAN spanning tree, you will have a broken network. You would think
spanning tree would just work around this problem, but it doesn't seem to
 when VLANs are configured.

and vtp why it is needed what purpose it serves

VTP is a management protocol that allows switches to share information
about VLAN names and IDs. It reduces configuration because you can
configure VLAN names and IDs on just one or two server switches. The rest
of the switches act as clients and pick up the info when they boot.

By default, the switches do not keep track of which switches have which
VLANs configured, however. I disagree with the other responder who said
VTP
reduces bandwidth usage on links and switches. It's VTP pruning that does
 that.

If you configure VTP pruning, then an added VTP message gets sent. The
added message includes VLAN membership information. With VTP pruning, the
switches become a bit smarter and do not forward traffic for a VLAN across
a link or to a switch that has no ports in that VLAN. This must be
configured. Without pruning, VTP just shares info about VLAN names and
IDs.

am sure there a myriad of other reasons..:)

VTP: one of the reasons is bandwidth - your access-links (that is links
between switches ) may become overburdened when you are forwarding traffic
from lots of VLANs over this trunk/access-link - this is more of a problem
when you don't need to forward some traffic over this link ie. the switches
on the receiving end do not have ports that are members of any of the
VLANs - by using VTP you can remove or 'prune' those VLAN's that the
receiving switch does not service.

Re: Is CCIE written still necessary for CCNPs? [7:14518]

2001-08-01 Thread Oliver Nadalin

I've noticed that the CCIE - whilst a cisco certification in the true sense
of the word - is not a 'Cisco Career Certification' such as CCNA/DA/NP/DP -
the CCIE is an entity unto itselfwhich means that is distinctly separate
from those mentioned above.

Follow this link for the latest info on the CCIE program:

Thoughts on CCIE Written [7:14116]

2001-07-30 Thread Oliver Nadalin

Passed the written today - here are my thoughts:

If you are a CCNP in good standing you shouldn't have a problem with
this...of course hit the token ring (RIF calculation; Ethernet to TR MAC
address translation) and bridging concepts. The exam wasn;t as hard as it
was made out to be - overhyped just a little :)...everything is relative
though i guess.

Passing was 70% - i was very pleased with my score (scored well above 70%).
What did i use? The Caslow book; the CCIE study guide by Sybex (read it in 3
days!!), the Boson tests (at only $30 - you cannot afford NOT to have it!)
and the Lou Rossi Token Ring white paper also used the www.cramsession.com
CCIE cram paper.

I want to thank those people that provided some insightful feedback on the
examnow onto the lab.

Oliver.

 Hi,

in a distance vector protocol, counting to infinity?

 A. calculates the time taken for a protocol to converge
 B. checks to make sure the number of route entries donot exceed a set
 upper limit.
 C. counts the packet dropped during a routing loop.
 D. sets upper limit for hop count , so that routing loops can be broken if
 this limit is reached.
 E. causes the router to enter an infinite loop and requires the router to
be
 restared.

 the choice is your's.

thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Thoughts on CCIE Written [7:14116]

2001-07-30 Thread Oliver Nadalin

Some points:

- you could pass the CCIE written without a CCNP (lots of pre-CCNA CCNP,
CCIE's obviously have)
- CCNA and CCNP certs are for the benefit of employers as well as yourself
- i found it much more manageable and beneficial to focus on each topic
seperately.
- when doing the CCNP, the depth of knowledge required on each subject
(routing, switching, remote access, support) is only to your benefit. Each
exam for the CCNP really tests on more intimate detailed knowledge than the
CCIE written will.
- having made the above points...and you still decide to by-pass the CCNP
then you must have a library that contains: Cisco LAN Switching (cisco
press), Routing TCP/IP Vol 1 and 2 (cisco press...of which one you have),
Internet Routing Architectures (cisco press), CCNP Study Guide 'Building
Cisco Remote Access Networks' (cisco press), and likewise the 'CCNP Support
Exam Certification Guide' (cisco press)some ATM material as well (Cisco
ATM Solutions)...and of course this is just a suggestion :)

The caslow book is great, good choice - but the CCIE Study Guide from Sybex
was really good for an overview...and don't forget that token ring white
paper

Thanks for the encouragement - and good luck to you too.

Oliver

Gongrats on your passing CCIE written and good luck with the LAB.

 I have a question. A bit about myself. I am a CCNA 2.0 and MCSE 4.0 and
CNA
5.0 with over 3 years of Novell/NT networking experience. At my work, I
have access to Cisco 2500, 2600 and 3600 series routers. But as you may
know
the real small campus networks are configured with static routes and there
is no way to practice. I am trying to by-pass CCNP and go for the CCIE
written and prepare for the lab. I have got Caslow's book for CCIE prep,
Jeff Doyle's TCP/IP Routing and using Cisco Mentor Sim Labs. You
mentioned
that after getting CCNP it is easier to pass CCIE written. I guess my
question is How difficult is to take CCIE written by-passing CCNP exams?
My
approach is to study for CCIE written combined as one big topic, rather
than dividing it to Routing, Switching, Remote Access, and Support. This
provides me a bigger picture. Since I am an MCSE and it was not difficult
to
pass CCNA with 924 score. I only had to familiarize myself with Cisco
router
commands. I have also subscribed to examcram.com to receive free questions
everyday for Routing Switching, Support, Switching and Remote Access. I
 have answered 85-90 percent correctly.

 Any ideas are appreciated.

 Thanks in advance,

 SP

Re: Study Materials for CCNP 2.0 Track?

2000-09-08 Thread Oliver Nadalin

Enough already with the whole Layer 1/Hub debacle.

The McGraw Hill stuff isn't that bad. It's a case of either-or when choosing
between Cisco Press and Mcgraw Hill.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote in message

Try layer 1. Hubs and repeateras are purely physical. They don't process
data in any way, shape, or form. All they do is move bits from one port to
another. They are focused on BITS, not packets, segments, or frames. Check
 your OSI layer functions.

Bridges and switches are layer 2
Routers and MLS cards are layer 3 4 (depending on whether you're
switching/routing by net address or protocol/port)

  Hi guys -

I'm studying for the CCNP myself, and I bought all four McGraw Hill
Technical Expert books (all supervised by Tom Thomas, author of the
Cisco
OSPF book) - and they stink. I'd wait for the Cisco or even the
Syngress

 hubs
are referred to throughout as "Layer 2 devices." 'Nuff said.

  Hi Tracy,

I'm just starting to study for my CCNP as well. I believe--someone
 correct
me if I'm wrong on this--that all the books for the CCNP 2.0 are
 available
save for the BSCN (Building Scalable Cisco Networks) which corresponds
to
the Routing 2.0 exam. I'm presently studying for the Switching 2.0
exam,
and the BCMSN (Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks) Cisco Press
 book
is available for that for certain. I believe the BCRAN and CIT books
are
also available though. Best of luck.
