RE: Load Sharing of 2 Serial on 2501 [7:7687]

2001-06-08 Thread Remmert Veen

Hi Cheeyong,

HSRP indeed won't do the trick, this is a redundancy mechanism.

To enable load-sharing, check what routing protocol you are running. OSPF
and EIGRP are able to do equal-cost load-sharing by default. If the 2 serial
links are unequal cost, I'd recommend EIGRP to provision unequal-cost
load-sharing.

Your network diagram unfortunately isn't too clear. From which network to
which network do you want to load-balance?

I hope this helps for now, let me know if I can further help you out.

Regards,
Remmert

Re: Underpaying Market [7:7698]

2001-06-08 Thread Remmert Veen

Dear KK,

First of all: this is a global forum, so if you state amounts, please also
state the proper currency! 55K in GBP is a hell of a lot more 55K in FF or
USD.

Second of all: this is a technical forum. If you're feeling underpaid, go to
your boss and complain. Salaries should always be considered on a
case-by-case basis.

Third of all: it are NOT the technical skills that make you a professional,
it are the social skills (i.e. professional attitude). Anybody can get a
certification if they study hard enough, proper social skills however are
what make you stand out in the crowd.

I hope this answers your question.

Remmert

IS-IS Multi-area problem [7:7708]

2001-06-08 Thread Remmert Veen

Fellow Engineers,

I have the following problem:
I'm trying to hook up a Cisco 3640, configured with 6 IS-IS processes for 6
different area's to another vendor's equipment (an SDH network element with
OSI as it's management protocol).

The problem here is that some adjacencies are formed, some or not. After
thorough investigation, we found that in an LSP the maximum area addresses
field is set to 3 (by default). The other vendor's equipment has no means of
changing this value.

Question: Is this value (the max. area number field) changeable? If so, how?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Remmert

RE: Automation [7:7707]

2001-06-08 Thread Remmert Veen

Hi PA,

You can access your routers remotely in several ways. It can be done via an
out-of-band modem (ie you dial into the router)or a telnet session (some
sort of IP-connectivity should exist between your remote location and the
lab).

With regards to 'pushing' your students' config: copy a 'clean' config to
your laptop (or any other device that can act as a tftp server). After the
class, erase the existing config (NOT just copy the new one over the old
one, some of the old commands will still be in there) and download the clean
one again.

Hope this helps.

Remmert

RE: NAT / citrix connectivity [7:7717]

2001-06-08 Thread Remmert Veen

Hi Robert,

My two cents:
The results of your ping (intermittent failures every other packet) remind
me of a problem I once had in the field. In this situation 2 routes were
advertised towards the destination, but only one of them was valid. Since
load-balancing was on by default, it caused every other packet to fail.

I don't if the snapshot is representative for your network (cause if it is,
my 2 cents are worthless), but perhaps this info is usefull in some way.

Remmert

Hmmmjust passed the BSCN as well, amazingly with a 919, just like you!

My findings are completely the same, the exam was way too easy. While I was
preparing for tough, in-depth questions and a lot of CLI commands, the exam
stuck at the level of 'What do the letters BGP stand for?'.

A shame, let's hope the switching-exam will be of a bit better quality.

RE: Questions from BSCN. [7:8530]

2001-06-14 Thread Remmert Veen

Hi Haruki,

I just passed the BSCN this monday, so the theory should still be fresh in
my mind. I'll do my best to help you out.

1) ??? Guess I need to do some re-reading on Null 0. What I remember is that
you can use Null 0 in a route map to have packets discarded or you can use
it in some way with a summary address (but to make this work you need to
have a more specific entry in your route table, otherwise the result of your
address summary will be all packets discarded). I'll have to getback on this
one.

2) The primary IP address is THE IP address you use to point to your
interface. A seconday IP address is mostly used to make discontiguous
subnets contiguous again. In other words, it's used as a kind of virtual
link to connect two separated pieces of one subnet.

3) As far as I remember master/slave had nothing to do with DR or DRother.
Master/slave settings are negotiated for each adjacency. It is possible that
the router who came out the negotiation as a slave has a more up-to-date LSP
in it's database. That's the scenario described in the BSCN-book.

Hope this helps you out a bit, should need any more info please let me know.

Regards,
Remmert

Re: ISIS [7:11277]

2001-07-09 Thread Remmert Veen

What you might want to try is enter 'clns routing' in global config. This
needs to be enabled for is-is to work. Should the router reply with an error
message, check your IOS-version. If the router takes it, try the 'router
isis' and 'ip router isis' commands again.

RE: question [7:12456]

2001-07-16 Thread Remmert Veen

Hey Christian,

This is what the Cisco website says:

For CCNP you have to take:
- 640-503 Routing (BSCN)
- 640-504 Switching (BCMSN)
- 640-505 Remote Access (BCRAN)
- 640-506 Support (CIT)

You can also combine the first three into a single exam (usefull for cust
reduction!):
- 640-509 Foundations

So to answer your question: there are at least 2 exams you have to take to
be a CCNP (640-506 + 640-509). However, I'd recommend the 'long' way of
taking each exam separately. Doing the 3-in-1 is a tough one!

Hope this helps.

Rgds,
Remmert

RE: dv protocols and nbma? [7:13011]

2001-07-20 Thread Remmert Veen

Hi Jason,

I haven't got too much experience on dv over nbma, but I'll give it a try.

As far as I am aware NBMA doesn't forward broadcasts, period. Should you
want to connect two RIP-networks via a LAN, I'd reckon a static route should
be in place, which you need to redistribute using the 'redistribute static'
command.

Should anyone else have other idea's, please let me know.

RE: VLAN: ISL or 802.1Q? [7:13325]

2001-07-23 Thread Remmert Veen

Hi Sammi,

Indeed, ISL is Cisco propietary, so should you consider other vendor's
switches in your network, now or in the future, I'd recommend 802.1q. Beware
however, dot1q has some drwabacks with regards to loops. Check out
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/c2900xl/29_35wc/sc/swgvlans.htm#xtocid1196639
 for the details.

If not (so your network is all Cisco) you might wanna consider ISL. Since it
is Cisco propietary, it's obviously fully supported by Cisco and has some
minor benefits.

RE: FrameRelay Over Utilized [7:13349]

2001-07-23 Thread Remmert Veen

Hi Jeff,

I've worked for 2 telco's as a FR-troubleshooter. The experience I have is
that the telco looks at the logs of their FR-switch (we used the Stratacom
IPX/IGX) and if they see a utilisation of 70% or up, they declare the PVC is
overutilised. If you could tell me which provider you have, I could perhaps
provide you with some background info on that.

If you want to test wether it's the utilisation or something else that's
causing the problem, here's a scenario you might try: disable all forwarding
off packets towards your FR PVC (with a temporary accesslist for example)
and monitor your interface for a while. The only traffic between you and
your provider should now be LMI. If the link continues to drop, there's
definitely another problem. Should it stay up, without errors, you've proven
that it's the utilisation causing the problems.

Hth,
Remmert
