ATM WAN design question

2001-03-22 Thread Kim Seng

I have a few questions about the ATM. Hopefully, you
will clear me up on something that I am not so sure.

I am tasked with upgrading my company current T1 WAN
to ATM DS-3 to 7 regional cities in the US. The HQ is
in Chicago. Currently, the requirement is only use
these DS-3 for Data. In the future, they will use it
to carry Data, Voice and Video to the branch offices.

For now, can I just implement Hub-to-Spoke topology of
PVCs with UBR, AAL5.
  1. Do I need to do any QoS on these 3600 routers?
  2. Do I need to have a Backup links for redundancy
in case the DS-3 link goes down. What about "Last
miles" redundancy? Or should I trust the Sprint ATM
cloud and ignore the backup??? Need your help badly
here.

  3. What do I need to do if they want to use these
DS-3 for AVVID. What type of QoS, CoS, AAL1 or AAL2?
What type of Backup should I use if we implement
AVVID?

Please shed me some light if you could.

many thanks in advance.

Network problem???

2001-03-30 Thread Kim Seng

I have a problem with all of my Windows 2000 servers
failed to authenticate into the PDC which is running
Windows NT 4.0 server. The Apps people are saying that
it is the Switches Network that I have. I checked all
of my switches and routers, I can not find of any ACL
or filter that cause their problem. They are thinking
that I do not know what I am doing and ask me to call
Cisco TAC for help. Before I do that, does anyone see
this before?

BGP multi-homed load sharing/balancing and redundancy [7:2095]

2001-04-26 Thread Kim Seng

Everyone,

I currently have two T-1's to ISP1 and a Fractional T3
to ISP2. I am using static and default routes to
connect them to the internet. There is no automaticaly
fail-over as you know. Therefore, I am changing our
ISPs but keep the BW the same. Two T1's to ISP1 and
FT3 to ISP2 and I would like to run BGP-4 at this time
with multihomed load sharing and load balancing across
these 3 links.

These will be two steps upgrade:

1. Run BGP load sharing/balancing across two T1 links
to ISP1. Can I do this while the FT3 link is
still up and running with default route to ISP2.
Another word, can I do load sharing/balancing and
redundancy at this step across these three links? (BGP
via T1s to ISP1 and FT3 default route to
ISP2)

2. The second step is changing the fractional T3 from
default route to run BGP and do load sharing
,balancing and redundancy across these three links.

Can these be done and what would be the appropriate
steps.

Many thanks in advance.

Kim.

HSRP and set spantree root design question [7:3208]

2001-05-04 Thread Kim Seng

I have a switches internetwork with:

S1 S2

C1 C2

D1 D2

A1 A2

S= server farm switch (Routing with MSFC)
C= Core switch (Layer 2 only)
D= Distribution switch (Routing with MSFC)
A= Access switch

A1 (is VLAN2) is connected to both D1 and D2.
A2 (is VLAN3) is connected to both D1 and D2.

D1 and D2 are running OSPF routing with HSRP.
The question that I have is since D1 and D2 are
running OSPF routing with HSRP. This provides Layer-3
load balancing, sharing and redundancy, Do I have to
worry or configure Layer-2 connection from A1 and A2
to both D1 and D2? I mean "set spantree root 2 on D1
and set spantree root secondary 2 on D2 ???

Many thanks in advance.

Kim.

ATM question [7:4452]

2001-05-14 Thread Kim Seng

To the ATM guru,

I have a ATM WAN via SPRINT from the HQ (Chicago) to 4
regional branch office (LA, FL, NY and CO).
The PVC infomations that SPRINT provides to me after
the circuit installation completed has only the
Originating VPI and Terminating VPI. There are no
information about the VCI. They said I can pick
any number for the VCI. This is new to me. Can someone
tell me that is true? I thought to configure
PVC you need both the VPI/VCI that must match with the
ingress ATM switch.

Many thanks in advance.

Cisco VPN bandwidth solution??? [7:4669]

2001-05-16 Thread Kim Seng

Hi everyone,

I have a fractional T3 for Internet connection in my
company. I am implementing VPN for user remote
access with Cisco VPN 3030. I think I have a problem
with my FT3 bandwidth ultilization because the
remote user VPN sessions are dropping off at some peak
time during the day. Is there a way that I can
implement some kind of QoS to reserve portion of this
FT3 bandwidth dedicated for the VPN (Without help
from the ISP side since they already refused to do
so). It does not have to be dynamicly allocated
with the normal Internet traffic.

Many thanks in advance.

We currently use default route via T3 to UUNET for

backup in case the T3 link is down. This is a manual
switch over between the T3 and T1 for backup since we
use the default and static route.
We are in the process of implemeting BGP4 for load

three link for redundancy and load sharing/balancing.

Remote access VPN at the same time?

I think it is impossible since I can only apply only
one crypto map to the outside interface.

Can someone confirm?

Kim.

BGP question [7:41132]

2002-04-10 Thread Kim Seng

My network has an Internet Border router. The router
has two ISPs connection: UUNET(T3) and SPRINT(T1). We
have a supernet class B: 18x.18x.0.0/16. Can I
configure the router so that only one of the class C
subnet of this supernet for example 18x.18x.1.0/24 to
use the SPRINT link for both inbound and outbound
traffic. The rest of the supernet will use the UUNET
link. But they need to backup each other when one of
them fails.

Thanks in advance.

Kim.

Re: CS-516 Terminal Server Issues [7:41760]

2002-04-17 Thread Kim Seng

You may want to try exec-timeout 0 0 under line con0
and no exec under line 1 16.

If you console into the 516-CS, it will take 5-10
minutes. It is normal according to Cisco. It take
about 30 sec if you telnet into it instead of using
the console.

Hi all,

I have an OC-3 155Mbps UBR WAN link between two sites.
When I transfer files between these two sites using

Sprint told me I need to change the registry:
TcpWindowSize to get better throughput. Have anyone
experienced this before?

Thanks in advance.

Help with upgrading 1601 s/w [7:27433]

2001-11-26 Thread Ng, Kim Seng David (David)

Hi group,

I need some advice on upgrading my 1601, Read from Flash(RFF)
router. It's now running IOS 11.1 on a 4Mb flash card. I have bought a
new 16Mb flash card and loaded IOS 12.1 (size about 10Mb) on my laptop.
Can I swap out the old flash card and insert the new 16Mb and do 'copy
tftp flash'? I have checked with some document in CCO which disallow
flash card removal for RFF 1600 routers. Will configuring the
config-register help? Any advice??

Thanks.
David

You can pull the flash card from the 1600 but this will crash the
router. I haven't done so in quite some time but I think you can pull
your old flash and install the new flash and it should boot up off the
frist file on the flash card. You can always add the "boot system flash
x" to CYA.

Dialer keyword in Snapshot Server cmd [7:28557]

2001-12-08 Thread Ng, Kim Seng David (David)

Hi group,

What function does the 'dialer' keyword in the 'snapshot server'
command has?? For eg,

snapshot server 5 dialer

As I understand, this keyword is required for snapshot clients to allow
them to dial to servers as only clients dials to servers (Am I right?).
What function it has then for servers since they never dial to clients?

The Cisco CD says this about the keyword:

snapshot server active-time [dialer]

dialer = (Optional) Allows the client router to dial up the remote
router in the absence of regular traffic.

Thanks
David

RE: Dialer keyword in Snapshot Server cmd [7:28557]

2001-12-09 Thread Ng, Kim Seng David (David)

Nick,

I managed to do some experiment with my home lab. When I ignored the
dialer keyword at the server side, the server end will not treat the
routing updates (ie. sending of routing updates) as interesting. As a
result, the idle timeout (default 120sec) will count down till zero.
Hence, the server will disconnect the ISDN call after 120sec even if the
snapshot active timer is not yet due. However, if the keyword is
present, every time an update is sent, the idle time-out is reset back
to 120sec and the ISDN link is kept up until the snapshot timer expires.

>From my observation, I think you can ignore the keyword if you are
applying the snapshot on serial interfaces or any interfaces which
doesn't dial out. Purely my guess.

Thanks
David

This keyword is applied on both server & client, but it works on Clients
only. It is used in conjuntion with dialer map snapshot command, which
directs the string to dial etc.

>From what I understand its just one of the Cisco things, whereby you
also
have to put in the dialer keyword (as in Snapshot server 5 dialer) on
the
server end, but without the matching dialer map snapshot command (and
also
due to server keyword) it never dials out and its also not meant to dial
out.

FW: Frame relay problems [7:28569]

2001-12-09 Thread Ng, Kim Seng David (David)

Once you solve R1-R4 problem, that should solve R1-R3. On R4, remove the
subi/f 0.1. Just work using the physical interface s0 and turn on
inverse arp like what you have for R3. Also add a map from R4 to R3.
That may help.

Thanks

Bootstrap protocol in Multicast [7:65243]

2003-03-12 Thread Ng, Kim Seng David (David)
Hi group,

In Bootstrap protocol, does the PIM router selects the RP with the higest or
lowest IP address (assuming everything else is the same) from the RP-set
list obtained in the RP-discovery message?? I was reading Jeff Doyle's
"Routing TCP/IP Vol 2" and pages 491 (first bullet point) and 564 (last
second para) seems to contradict. I have done some testing and it seems to
be the lower IP address. Auto-RP seems to be the opposite.

Appreciate any response.

Thanks
David

Simulating a 64K link in lab [7:25061]

2001-11-02 Thread Ng, Kim Seng David (David)

Hi group,

I am new to this group. Wondering whether someone could help..

I have two routers (2621 and 1601) tied back-to-back using V.35 serial.
Can I simulate a 64K link with this config if I execute "bandwidth
64000" at the interface prompt?? What I understand is that this command
is used in eigrp to limit eigrp traffic to 50% of what ever b/w one
specified. Does this physically limit the link to a speed of 64K too??

Thank you in advance
ksng

Can frame-relay multipoint sub-interfaces support inverse arp?? [7:26362]

2001-11-15 Thread Ng, Kim Seng David (David)

Hi,

I was a bit confused after reading the Ciscopress CCNP Support book and
Caslow's ccie book. Can frame-relay multipoint sub-interfaces support
inverse arp DLCI mappings?? Ciscopress Support book seem to say no (not
directly though) but Caslow's book says yes. Thanks in advance...

David
