What is static NAT subnet mask?

2001-03-27 Thread Shawn Xu

One static NAT question, I don't know how to explain.

For example,

ip nat inside source static 10.0.200.1 66.59.34.3

What is subnet mask for 10.0.200.1, and what is sebnet mask for 66.59.34.3?

Thanks

Load Balance and Fault Redundancy [7:962]

2001-04-17 Thread Shawn Xu

One of our customers asks for load balance and fault redundancy. They have a
Cisco router 1605 with a serial0 for T1 (216.94.x.x), and eth0 for local
network, eth1 for DSL (66.59.x.x). This router satisfies their scenario
hardware requirements.

How to configure the Cisco router 1605 (just one router, not HSRP) to
implement load balance and fault redundancy, and serial0 and eth1 are using
different ip block? When DSL and T1 lines are both working fine, they want
to have load balance. If one of the lines, either T1 or DSL, is down, they
need fault tolerance. Let's say, T1 is down, all the users on the local
network automatically use DSL to get to the Internet.

Any suggestions will be highly appreciated.

Win 2000 DNS server query test failed [7:1852]

2001-04-25 Thread Shawn Xu

I know this is Cisco stuff study group, but I am really stuck at one DNS
server problem, maybe someone knows.

Also if we should not post any questions not related to Cisco, please warn
me, and I will not do again next time.

We have a Windows 2000 DNS server (66.59.140.251), and in fact it is
working, but for some reasons it doesn't synchronize with other DNS servers
properly. When we do "A simple query against this DNS server" and "A
recursive query to other DNS servers" test, both of them failed.

I have read some books, they say it is very important to pass these two
tests, but they don't say why and how to make them pass.

When we checked DNS log files,it say:
ERROR: GQCS failure on dead socket. status=995, socket=456, pcon=00465EDC,
state=-1, IP=66.59.140.251.

What does it mean? How to fix this problem?

Any help will be highly appreciated.

so weird [7:2550]

2001-04-30 Thread Shawn Xu

I have a router configured 216.226.97.130 for eth0 as local network gateway,
and ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 x.x.x.x, everything is working fine except one
program: intny7.ilx.net. On any workstations, I can not ping this host which
says time out.

If I run route print on the workstations, it says network destination:
162.8.232.166, netmask 255.255.255.255, gateway 216.226.97.132. I wonder why
it does not go through the default gateway 216.226.97.130 to get out, and
tries a wrong gateway 216.226.97.130.

Any idea will be appreciated.

IIS5 migration [7:8136]

2001-06-12 Thread Shawn Xu

Hi, everybody:

We have a Windows 2000 server IIS5 running, and so many web sites on it. Now
we want to implement load balancing and fault tolerance functions, so that
we have to build Windows 2000 Advanced Server machines, because you can not
upgrade Windows 2000 Server to Windows 2000 Advanced Server. However some web
sites are very difficult to set them up, and we did a long time ago
supported by developers. So I don't want to manually build each site, is
there any way for us to migrate Windows 2000 Server IIS5 configurations to
Windows 2000 Advanced Server IIS5?

Please help. Thanks.

Topic repeat [7:33865]

2002-01-31 Thread Shawn Xu

First of all, I should announce I have searched Archives before I post this
message, but not exactly match my question.

Some people said for this topic you have to use BGP, and some people said
you can use default route if you are only for load balance and fault
tolerance purpose.

We have one client, who currently uses T1 line (Cisco 2503 router) to an
ISP, and has a whole class C ip address (/24) from the ISP. And on their
local network, they have web server, mail server, etc. everything is working
fine.

Now they want to connect to us using SDSL line (Cisco 1605 router) for load
balance and fault tolerance.

How to do that?

1. Cannot use BGP, because nobody wants to buy a BGP router.
2. Static or default route:
(1) HSRP groups implement load sharing, and automatically switching over in
case of one line is down, is it right?
(2) Because they are using T1 line ISP's IP address for local network, if T1
line is down, how can we route their traffic through DSL line, ip route
0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 DSL_ISP will work? and from outside how people can reach
their local network through DSL line?

Thanks

Shawn

How to route this ip traffic to pass through [7:34664]

2002-02-06 Thread Shawn Xu

Please see the attachment for the scenario.

Let's say we are at ISP1, and our upstream is ISP2. We don't have our own
IPs,in other words, we got all the ips from ISP2, and we have only static
route to ISP2.

Now, one client, they have their own public IP block, and they want to
connect to ISP1, and use their own IPs.

How to route the client's ip traffic to pass through ISP1 and ISP2?

Thank you for your help.

1605 New Flash Card Help [7:39438]

2002-03-25 Thread Shawn Xu

I recently got a new(new to me, but it is old in fact) flash card for my
1605 to upgrade it to 8MB, but I have trouble to get it working. Every time
I try to copy tftp flash I get "%Error: No PCMCIA flash chip information
available."

I have tried the "format flash" command, which isn't available on my router.
I've also tried "erase flash," which *seems* to work, but when I run "show
flash", the same error:

"%Error: No PCMCIA flash chip information available."

All help will be appreciated.

Cisco router 827 does not pick up automatically [7:39691]

2002-03-27 Thread Shawn Xu

I have a Cisco router 827 running fine, but one problem is that whenever the
ISP is down or does something, the Internet connection is down. The 827
doesn't pick up the connection automatically when the ISP is back up, I have
to manually reboot this router. After I reboot, then the connection is ok.

How can we make the Router automatically pick up the connection ?

Thanks

Can we do this? [7:39752]

2002-03-28 Thread Shawn Xu

I have a Cisco 1605 router, and I want to use it to do NAT and Access-list.
E0 nat inside, and E1 nat outside, local network ip 172.16.1.0/24, and each
ip for a web site on one machine, then can I do:

ip nat inside source static 172.16.1.1 public-ip1
ip nat inside source static 172.16.1.2 public-ip2

ip nat inside source static 172.16.1.254 public-ip254

access-list 101 permit tcp any 172.16.1.0 0.0.0.255 eq www

int e1
ip access-group 101 in

I understand one port 80 to one ip like "access-list 101 permit tcp any host
172.16.1.2 eq www" which is working fine, but how about one port 80 to
multiple IPs?

Any idea will be appreciated!

access-list problem [7:40092]

2002-04-01 Thread Shawn Xu

I want to use NAT and access-list to protect our web server with private ips
172.16.1.3 to .12

The following is the configuration file. If my web server ip is 172.16.1.3,
then from outside I cannot get anything if I search pub_ip_3

If I added "access-list 101 permit tcp any any eq www", which is working
fine.

Can someone correct this problem? Also I know it is not good access list,
especially icmp and telnet, I don't want to disable them, but what is good
way to do it?

Thank you very much

Bandwidth and Speed Concepts [7:17917]

2001-08-30 Thread Shawn Xu

Hi, Everyone:

Sometimes I am stupid, I could not tell clearly from these two things:
bandwidth and speed.

For example, T1 connection, we know the speed is 1.544Mbps, that means this
line can transfer 1.544 Mega bits per second, this is speed.

But what is bandwidth? I am working on bandwidth monitor using MRTG saying
Bits Per Second. My colleague said I don't need time, per second, I need
just how many bits or packets, this is bandwidth. For bandwidth you can not
use time system?

Please help, thanks

Cisco 827 ADSL Emergency Help [7:27945]

2001-12-02 Thread Shawn Xu

Hi,

Who has Cisco 827 ADSL router experience, please help. This is a real
emergency, not only today is Sunday I am still on the site to figure out
what is going on here, but also the company complains too much because they
can not remotely access.

The problem is like this:

After you reboot the 827, everything is working fine, all the interfaces are
up, but you don't know how long it will last, sometimes a few of hours,
sometimes one hour, sometimes maybe 5 to 6 hours, then no Internet. When you
show interface at this time, all the inerfaces are still up except
virtual-access1 line protocol which was down.

Any idea? and is there anything related to my configuration file (please see
the attached for the file)?

Thank you so much in advance.

Off Topic: DNS Delegation Help [7:28910]

2001-12-12 Thread Shawn Xu

We are ISP to assign different ip blocks to our customers. After subnetting
, one of our clients asks me to do "Reverse DNS Delegation" for his DNS. He
owns his DNS and domain name which is not our subdomain.

I think, in order to do DNS reverse delegation, the delegated domain must be
a subdomain of our domain. For example, our domain is company.com, and their
domain must be something like sales.company.com, but he is not our
subdomain. Please help to clear the concept.

Anyway, what I did is based on the attached, but it is still not working.

Please help. Thank you very much in advance.

Hardware BGP [7:31459]

2002-01-09 Thread Shawn Xu

Hi, All:

I never had chance to do BGP stuff before.

My question is :

In order to do BGP, what we need? just software as long as we have IOS
version x?
or only some routers can do BGP? Cisco router 1605 can do BGP?

Thank you so much.

Hardware BGP? [7:31529]

2002-01-10 Thread Shawn Xu

Hi, All:

Which Cisco router can run BGP? Cisco 1605 can do it?

I never had BGP experience, and I think it depends on IOS version, not

Please help. Thanks.

BGP AS Number [7:32107]

2002-01-15 Thread Shawn Xu

As far as we know, when you connect to two ISPs for load balancing and fault
tolerance, you have to configure BGP, please refer

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/459/40.html

but from the above examples, you have to have your own AS number. If I don't
have my own AS number, I can not connect to two ISPs?

Please help, thanks.

Re: BGP AS Number [7:32107 ]----John and Eric [7:32164]

2002-01-16 Thread Shawn Xu

Hi, John and Eric:

Thank you both for your help.

I don't have BGP experience, and I will check the book Eric recommended.

We have T1 connection to an ISP using Cisco router 2503 with 207.x.x.x/24 ip
addresses, now we also want to connect to another ISP (SDSL line) for load
balancing and fault tolerance using Cisco 1605 with 66.x.x.x/29 IPs (or I
have more).

My questions:

1. As John said, we have to apply for our own AS number?
2. Cisco router 1605 can do BGP?
3. What ip is local clients' default gateway? because for 2503 ip is
207.x.x.x, and for 1605 ip is 66.x.x.x or 1605 connecting to local network
interface must use 207.x.x.x ip, even though what is default gateway without
HSRP for automatically switching over in any case one line is down? Also we
have web server and mail server on our network, how to configure DNS to
point to right path?

Thanks, please help.

Shawn

Console problem [7:62179]

2003-01-30 Thread Shawn Xu
I have a strange problem or serious problem.

I configured a Cisco 1605R router which was configured before. This time, I
only changed E0 and E1 ip address, and default route through the console.
After that, I put it into the server room, booted it up, but I couldn't ping
the interfaces. I thought maybe the interfaces were not up, I should run "no
shutdown" command.

I took it back to the office, connected the console port to the com1, but it
never comes back. It is dead. It can not boot. Nothing shows in Hyper
Terminal. Maybe one time of ten times of reboot just shows @ . That is all.

Note: console cable, com1, and Hyper terminal are working fine.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Shawn

Can I just import PIX 520 configuration file to PIX 535 without changing
