Subject: question regarding spanning tree [7:6485]

Hello.

I don't really have a problem so much as I am trying to get a better
understanding of how Spanning Tree works. I am currently studying for my
switching exam and am reviewing Spanning Tree. I have the following
statement from the Cisco course manual and in the case of redundant paths to
the root bridge, it states In order to choose which port will be forwarding
data and which ports will be blocking data, the switch looks at two
components in the BPDU, as follows:

1. Path Cost

2. Port ID

The switch looks at the path cost first to determine which port is receiving
the lowest cost path. If the path cost is equal, as in the case of parallel
links, the bridge goes to the port ID as a tie-breaker. The port with the
lowest port ID forwards and all other ports block.

I decided to verify this on one of my 4006's which connects to my 6509
(which is the root) and here is what I found:

pet4006_8 (enable) sh spantree statistics 1/2 1
Port 1/2 VLAN 1

SpanningTree enabled for vlanNo = 1

BPDU-related parameters
port spanning tree enabled
stateforwarding
port_id 0x8002
port number 0x2
path cost4
message age (port/VLAN) 0(20)
designated_root 00-d0-01-98-5c-00
designated_cost 0
designated_bridge00-d0-01-98-5c-00
designated_port 0x8087
top_change_ack FALSE
config_pending FALSE
port_inconsistency none

PORT based information statistics
config bpdu's xmitted (port/VLAN)0(8702816)
config bpdu's received (port/VLAN) 831061(1662121)
tcn bpdu's xmitted (port/VLAN) 1(1)
pet4006_8 (enable) sh spantree statistics 1/1 1
Port 1/1 VLAN 1

SpanningTree enabled for vlanNo = 1

BPDU-related parameters
port spanning tree enabled
stateblocking
port_id 0x8001
port number 0x1
path cost4
message age (port/VLAN) 1(20)
designated_root 00-d0-01-98-5c-00
designated_cost 0
designated_bridge00-d0-01-98-5c-00
designated_port 0x80c8
top_change_ack FALSE
config_pending FALSE
port_inconsistency none

However, as you can see from the above output, Port 1/2 is the port chosen
to forward and it appears to have a higher port ID number. Can someone
please explain what I am missing here?

Thanks!

RE: spanning tree [7:1754]

2001-04-25 Thread Williamson, Paul

I would, otherwise you have no guarantee which bridge will becomer the root
bridge for vlan 1. You might end up with a dodgy low performance switch
becoming root, or it could cause a sub-optimal forwarding path to be
created consisting of a number of bridge hops.

This could cause an issue when managing your devices.

Also use the same command to create a Backup Root for all of your vlans

RE: what wrong with the access-list?? [7:1825]

2001-04-25 Thread Williamson, Paul

These are answers to your questions, although i wouldn't simply use these
answer to configure this router.

1) you need to upgrade your IOS (not sure what to exactly 12.x will do it)
2) you should use ACL numbers 100-199, also use Deny, don't need the eq any
ie
sin-net(config)#access-list 101 deny tcp host 100.100.100.100 host
100.100.100.101

to deny everything use
sin-net(config)#access-list 101 deny ip host 100.100.100.100 host
100.100.100.101

3)As part of other set of access lists on your serial side
Router(config)#access-list 101 deny icmp any host 100.100.100.101
Router(config)#int s0
Router(config-if)ip access-group 101 in

Hope this helps

Here's an easy one

2001-02-23 Thread Williamson, Paul

Ok so we know how to convert a multicast ip into a mac, how about the
reverse.

I got a syslog message that made me curious:-
"invalid traffic from multicast source address 0f:37:59:6f:df:0d"
and i thought well i wonder what ip address that would be but i couldn't
figure out the first octet.

Should all multicast mac addresses start with 01-00-5e ??
Is this mac address invalid ?

Anyone ?
Thanks

RE: Portfast ???

2000-09-07 Thread Williamson, Paul

You can and should have links connected to other switches/hubs/routers that
are portfast enabled.
However you should leave portfast disabled when there is resiliency between
2 network devices which would cause a spanning tree loop.

You have to enable it on an interface-by-interface basis and make sure the

Has anyone done this before? Are there any problems you encountered or

RE: Nobody able to help me ?

2000-09-06 Thread Williamson, Paul

Methinks that the amount of Octets received on port 1/1 on sup is
1.3.6.1.2.1.16.1.1.1.4.32
Port 1/2 is 1.3.6.1.2.1.16.1.1.1.4.48

I think they increase in multiples of 16, and alos they are a counter so it
will increase with ever poll.

So find out what port you want to monitor and do the maths.

I haven't had to do this for a long time so it might be slightly incorrect.

Try compiling this MIB and you should be able to find a Trunk Status. This
assumes you are using a Cat 5000.

ip access-group 100 in
ip access-group 100 out

yet this is not preventing the connections. can

RE: MRTG and OID's

2000-08-30 Thread Williamson, Paul

I don't think you're fixing the real problem.
You should configure the dialer-lists so that only interesting traffic is
allowed to bring up the isdn line and keep it up.

If you fix this then you won't need mrtg.

Subject: MRTG and OID's

Hello,

I got a situation for ya'll :)

On a 4500 router we have a PRI connected. We use this line for remote
control for custumors on different locations.

Now. A lot of times we get calls from our telecom provider that some lines
to custumors are open for mare than a couple of days. We haven't got a tool
that monitors those lines for us.

My idea is to use MRTG for that. Via MRTG and a specific oid number, I
thought I would be able to see the uptime of some of the channels of our
PRI. Well .. the problem is that I couldn't find any OID that'll work with
MRTG or the 4500 router.

My question: Is there an OID for this matter, or do I run a script wich
output I use for MRTG ?

Thnx,

JT

RE: VLAN problem ?

2000-08-25 Thread Williamson, Paul

You don't need to have VTP on, but if you did it and the 4006 port was a
trunk then vlan 1 would have been allowed on the trunk automatically, and
removed off the trunk when not required.

By default all vlans will be forwarded out of the 4006 trunk.

Paul/Robert,
 Thanks for the response,
The port isn't currently set as a trunk port. QED.
Does the setting of a trunk port have any connection
with VTP ? since I have been assured that VTP is not
required to achieve the desired result.

Thanks again,

Phil.

 Subject: VLAN problem ?

 Hi gang,

I've got an issue with a VLAN that I set up
 recently.
 I have a 3524 switch of which 4 ports I have
placed into VLAN 100. These ports are farmed out to
 a
set of 2924 switches that belong to part of our old
 network.
The 3524 switch is GBIC'd down to a Cat 4006 Core
switch. The core port is placed into VLAN 100.
This is then routed to the new network at the core.

Although everyone is working away happily, I have no
management view of this Cat 3524. From the core
 switch
I cannot ping the "cdp neighbor" 3524 switch ?

I am concluding that VLAN 1 isn't getting through
 due
 to a config issue.

Can anyone shed any light ?

 Regards,

 Phil.

EIGRP good design guidelines needed

2000-08-02 Thread Williamson, Paul

Hi
Not sure if i can do this (there is no problem that i am trying to solve,
just wondering if its good design principles)

Basically i have 2 routers in a core. One router could connect to networks.
192.168.115.0 /30
192.168.115.4 /30
192.168.115.8 /30
192.168.115.12 /30

The other to
192.168.115.16 /30
192.168.115.20 /30
192.168.115.24 /30
192.168.115.28 /30

Running EIGRP, should i auto-summarise or manually summarise
I believe if manually summarising is better; then for one router the summary
command would be
ip summary-address eigrp 20 192.168.115.0 255.255.240.0

What would the command be on the second core router ?

I haven't any configs to attach, its purely speculation at the moment
