RE: home lab equipment [7:75115]

2003-09-11 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I stopped buying long ago except isdn pbx,

basics on routers at home,

and started renting a few low budget ATM/VOICE etc. labs online.

Onderwerp: home lab equipment [7:75115]

Group,

I'm planning on purchasing my final addition to my RS home lab sometime
this month. I'm having a hard time deciding if I should add another 3550
(I have one already) or if I should pick up a Lightstream 1010 with two
4500s that have an OC3 MM interface. ATM for the 3600s is way too
expensive for me. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

(Sorry if this message is a dub)

RE: home lab equipment [7:75115]

2003-09-09 Thread Daniel Cotts
Which set of equipment (3550 vs ATM) can have the more devious requirements
in the lab? If two 3550s then buy it. If the ATM then buy it. I'd lean
towards the 3550 and rent time for the ATM. I have no LAB experience to back
up my opinion. Be forewarned.

RE: Home lab setup FRAME SWITCH [7:58204]

2002-11-27 Thread Keith Foster
Elijah,

I use a 2521 as a frame switch in my home lab and that is enough for me.
Keep in mind that it only has four serial interfaces, so if you want to do
more frame connections, you will need the 2522 or 2523 which have ten serial
interfaces. You have more routers in your lab than I do. I only have six
routers (not including the 2521). So, the 2521 works well for the number of
routers I have.

Yes, I think it's a good idea to purchase your own equipment. It's there
whenever you need it, you can do whatever you want with it, and you're more
apt to practice on it if it's right down the hall!

:-) I can argue this from both perspectives. On the one hand, I am
involved in a virtual rack business (suitable disclaimers apply). The
advantages there are not having to purchase expensive and specialized
equipment, predefined scenarios and other educational material, and
technical support. It's also easier on cash flow.

Again with all due caveats, I really think a remote rack is a better
learning technique--even if that remote rack is in your house and
accessed via a terminal server. When you get into the real
operations world, all your routers are NOT going to be in the same
room, and you might as well get experience doing things through a
console. The new CCIE lab also is structured this way.

As an instructor, I found the newer students did seem to derive a
certain comfort level from actually being able to see the equipment,
but quite honestly, I found this to be a mental crutch. Until you
really master remote console access, telnetting between routers,
etc., you aren't going to get the speed for the CCIE lab.

If you're at the CCNA level and can afford it, the tradeoffs are
somewhat different. Having 2 or 3 (preferably) cheap routers (e.g.,
2501) and perhaps a switch could be a cheap way to get comfortable
with the CLI. It's a whole different world when you need ISDN, ATM,
voice, etc., simulators.

But Shawn, you also remind me (I'm a telecommuter) that I have a
fairly good gym in my house. I'm not nearly as likely to get into my
car and drive to the local gym than I am to jump on the exercise bike
or do some bench presses when Cisco has rotted my brain.

Of course, to the best of my knowledge, nobody has gotten
cyberbodybuilding to work (I'm not talking about morphed images).

Re: Home LAB [7:41897]

2002-04-19 Thread cebuano

My two differing views, each bounded by its own lifespan...
1. Buy your own equipment.
Well, not only are there failed dot-coms but also failed efforts and hopes
from
individuals thinking it would be an easy path to CCIE-dom. Both provide
constant
overflow of routers/switches on eBay that the prices have dropped by more
than
50% (mostly) in the past 10 months. Plus if you're not yet in IT, getting
exposed to
REAL Cisco gear for the FIRST time AFTER you've passed the lab...UHMM...

2. Rent remote rack.
This i think will become the ONLY solution for most individuals when the
CCIE
lab gets revamped. As you can see from the changes of content already
confirmed
by the new areas individuals get tested on starting from the CCNP series,
it's only
a matter of time before a Cat5 and 8 2500/4500's just won't give you the
ability
to perform half of what will be covered in the lab. Example: MLS, MPLS,
Voice,
PNNI...the list goes on with new technologies that are very likely to
replace Token
Ring. AND, with the remote practice labs, you have the brains of the people
behind
it (like Howard) to provide you scenarios that either show you how far
you've
progressed or how far behind you are in your studies.

My 2 cents.
Elmer Deloso

The Catalyst 2924XL uses IOS . Catalyst 5000 series switches uses CatOS (the

You need at least a switch that is running CatOS in your home lab.

Re: Home lab - 2523 [7:27788]

2001-12-09 Thread Circusnuts

I can't explain the 2523, but try the 2520, 2521, 2522. The 2514 is very
expensive due to it's abililty to fuction as a dual Ethernet firewall via
FW/IOS. As far as bang for the buck, a cheap 4000 or 4000M with an NP-4T
has more appeal in a home lab scenario (possibly cheaper too). I used a
4500M for my Frame Switch and it has 1 Fast Ethernet OC3-MM (making the
best use of the space :o)

All the best !!!
Phil

PS- if you want cheap- get an MGS or AGS. Make sure you have @ least 4
Serials and 4 Ethernets would be helpful too.

Re: Home lab - 2523 [7:27788]

2001-12-09 Thread EA Louie

Agree with Phil on that, especially with the 4000M - it will still run 12.1
code if you max out the memory, but they're not the cheapest. I have one
that's configured with an NP-4T, NP-1E, and NP-1R - it's my 2513 look-alike
with 2 extra serials.

My strategy for a home lab is to make as many parts multifunctional and
multi-interface as possible - less parts, more function. I can't remember
who made that suggestion to me last summer, but it has paid off in spades.

 I can't explain the 2523, but try the 2520, 2521, 2522. The 2514 is
very
expensive due to it's abililty to fuction as a dual Ethernet firewall via

Re: home lab equipment [7:26555]

2001-11-17 Thread Brad Ellis

I'd definitely add an ISDN simulator. dump the SUP3 and RSM module to pay
for the rest of your lab. put enterprise/FW/IDS software on your 2600.
setup a tacacs+ server and maybe an IDS director. add a windows 2000 server
for CA enrollment (you can do tacacs+ and CA on the same box). I'd also
get a 2520 or 2522 to act as a frame-relay switch. other than that, you're
good to go! good luck with your studying. let me know if you have any
questions.

thanks,

The sample labs are free.. I have links for books, testing, downloads etc.
Drop a line with any comments you might have, suggestions and yes, dislikes :)

When I started with Cisco routers and the certs, my book I constantly
reached for was Cisco Routers for IP Routing by Rudenko and a second was
Practical Cisco Routers by Que. This was a bit over 2 years ago and many
more books are out nowdays.

I almost forgot.. one I still use as a ready reference is Cisco Router
troubleshooting Handbook by Rybaczyk which has alot of examples with decent
descriptions for each example.

No book is perfect but you pick what works for yourself.

RE: Home lab question [7:2491]

2001-04-30 Thread Daniel Cotts

We are studying to attain certs but the primary focus should be to become
networkers. An external CSU/DSU is closer to the real world than a
back-to-back cable. Consider acquiring another external CSU/DSU. Run those
boxes back to back between two routers. Alternately if you have a modular
router buy a WIC with the CSU/DSU built-in. Connect that to your Paradyne
which connects to the serial port of a second router.

Router will detect what cable is plugged in .
You can see that with sh controllers ...
Put dce cable in one and dte in the other .
Set clock on the dce router , configure a similar

 up/up.

   3. once they are connected (if i cant use ospf,

  Don't now about ccnp .

   4. I just bought an external modem, so I can
 dial
   in
to the router. Anyone know how to set this up
 to
simulate a t1 coming in? Such as, from my 56k

line to the external modem to the serial port?
 Or
   is
   my logic flawed?

No way to simulate T1 with a dialup connection .

 2. how do i connect the two routers? I know i use
the serial calbe, but which router gets the dte or
dce? i reda that all routers are dte, and therefore
need to have the clock rate set if not using the
 dce!
So, on this router 2514 when i teyped in show int
 s0,
it says down, down. Now, I went into interface
 mode,
and did a no shutdown. And then I assigned it an ip
address. But, i cant do anything til i get that
 interface up.

Router is by default nothing :-)
Router will detect what cable is plugged in .
You can see that with sh controllers ...
Put dce cable in one and dte in the other .
Set clock on the dce router , configure a similar
protocol , ppp or hdlc and things should come up/up.

 3. once they are connected (if i cant use ospf, ill
settle for eigrp :), then what? This ccnp stuff is
really hard without the materials (such as frame
 lines
coming into the house, or csu/dsu's!!)

Don't now about ccnp .
Then ... coffee I suppose .

 4. I just bought an external modem, so I can dial
 in
to the router. Anyone know how to set this up to
simulate a t1 coming in? Such as, from my 56k phone
line to the external modem to the serial port? Or
 is
 my logic flawed?

No way to simulate T1 with a dialup connection . Think
you can put a t1 back-to-back but not with c2500 . I
saw a guy do it once with two c4500 .

Any advice is very, very appreciated! You guys are

Re: home lab

2001-01-17 Thread J Roysdon

Bad info about back to back 2500s. I'm using them in my home lab:

2501 dce:
interface Serial0
 no shutdown
 ip address 172.16.0.1 255.255.255.252
 clockrate 400

2502 dte:
interface Serial0
 no shutdown
 ip address 172.16.0.2 255.255.255.252

With that and the dte/dce back to back cable, it just came up.

2501#sh contr serial
HD unit 0, idb = 0x93830, driver structure at 0x97BC8
buffer size 1524 HD unit 0, V.35 DCE cable, clockrate 400
*snip*

2502#sh contr serial
HD unit 0, idb = 0xB9694, driver structure at 0xBE418
buffer size 1524 HD unit 0, V.35 DTE cable
*snip*

Doesn't reflect what's plugged in regarding DTE vs. DCE. The 2501 end is
DCE, the 2502 is DTE. However, if you notice the difference between the
lines: 2501 DCE device has clockrate specified. Also, no matter what
clockrate I specify on the DTE side, it will not take the command (no error,
just never sets it, as clockrate is set by the DCE).

RE: home lab

2001-01-17 Thread Chuck Larrieu

Depends on the IOS version

In earlier ( 11.3 and earlier, if memory serves ) you can have what I call
the "phantom clockrate"

Swap the cable ends, and watch the clockrate appear on that interface where
the command "would not take".

Swap again, and watch the command disappear again.

This was corrected in 12.x
