This explains it pretty well:

It's a bit long-winded, but it beats looking at Moi's diagrams!

I'm getting pretty rusty on my OSPF, but don't all three of those things
happen? Redistribution causes router b to become an ASBR and thus it
generates type 5 (external) LSAs. But don't the ABRs have to generate type
4 (summary asbr) LSAs into their respective areas before those type 5s are
of any use? I don't think it's one or the other (ASBR external or ABR
summary).

Good point! He has to do something of that sort. Redistributing the static
route should work. Other methods would work too, if we knew more about his
OSPF network. Theoretically, Router B is an ASBR. Can't an ABR advertise an
ASBR Summary LSA to let the rest of the OSPF network know about the ASBR? Or
the ASBR itself can advertise an AS External Link. Am I getting way too
weird here? ;-)

Priscilla,
After rereading the question, I see my mistake. I guess I just read right
over the part where he said there was no route from B to A.
Those pesky details will get you every time.

Won't he also need to redistribute the static route on router b into
OSPF, so that the rest of the OSPF area learns the route?

Router B knows how to route packets into its OSPF domain, so that won't
be a problem, but have you considered the replies from the OSPF side
going back to Router A? You'll need a static route on Router B pointing
back the other way, and then it should all work fine.

I disagree - how does router B know to route traffic back to router A?
Router
B will need some static route back to Router A, or some other IGP needs to
run
between A and B. As it is now, traffic *can* get from router A to the OSPF
cloud, but not back.

Anthony,
If I understand you correctly, it shouldn't be a problem. All you're doing
is mixing dynamic with static routing. It's done every day, all over the
world. By the way, how do you like your Extreme equipment. Where I used to
work did a migration to Extreme (or rather has been doing a migration to
Extreme for over a year now, DOH!). Just wondering if you've had better
luck than them. :)
