Re: how to build a pix firewall out of a PC box. [7:18335]

2002-05-17 Thread Thomas Larus

The home-built Pix strikes me as being more trouble and expense than it is
worth. I read about someone who made one, and he had to use an expensive
flash card that cost nearly as much as a base-model Pix. The home-built Pix
has certain obvious legal deficiencies, and, it is safe to say, could never
be resold to someone who might want to run it in a production network.

I'm probably missing something here, but if anyone wants a Pix, there are
some shockingly cheap base models that people can buy new from a Cisco
reseller (around 400-600 dollars, I seem to remember). I imagine these may
lack some functionality that the more expensive Pixes might have, but at
least people wouldn't have to go on to bulletin boards asking for
license/code numbers to use to make their firewall work. And selling your
real Pix or using it a production network would be a possibility.

If you want to build a firewall for the fun of building a firewall, it makes
more sense to go the Linux/Unix route.

Of course, I'm working on R&S, not Security, so there may be some great
advantage to these homebuilt Pixes (over the retail Cisco Pix base models)
that I am unaware of.

What about IDE Flash? Is it possible to use that for a home-built PIX?
Easy to obtain Compact Flash cards and buy adapters to connect to IDE. This
works for a Linux firewall:

Regardless, I would like to get those instructions from you Mike.

2001-09-09 Thread sam adams

Cisco 506 was recently on ebay and it sold for $960. Retail price is about
$1400. With corp discounts, it's about 900-1000. Does this Pix does
everything? Maybe. At least you know it works, and one does not have to
scour vendors to find the flash card.

Where did you get a quote for $100? The prices I have been quoted for the
16MB ISA flash card from Cisco were considerably more than that. I don't
remember exactly what the price was but it was somewhere around $700-$800 if
memory serves.

I have tried building the PIX from a PC in the past and the sticking point
is getting the correct ISA flash card. Unless there is some magic you know
of, the card has to support booting from certain memory addresses or it
won't work. (or at least it didn't when I tried) The PIX actually loads its
bios from the flash card, so without the correct flash card you won't get
far.

If you got your flash from a friend, did they get it from a PIX? If so,
this is obviously "cheating" since the point of trying to build a PIX is
that you don't have one to get the flash card from in the first place. If
not, where did they get it and what is the manufacturer and model?

Kent

OK, I have been getting 256 emails for the past few days regarding how to
build a PIX out of an old PC. Now for thos, who have all the spare
parts, you just have to wait a tad longer until everyone in the group get
their parts so that we can build the PIX together at once.

Regarding the flash card, this is rather an old technology before the
PCMCIA card the old machine use to store program instead of the
hard-drive or other means. The flash card I am talking about is the one
that looks like an old ISA video card that gets inserted into the ISA
slot on the motherboard. Because PIX doesn't use hard-drive, this flash
card is where the PIX IOS code resides. I don't know where to purchase
it. I got this card from a friend of mine.

Another thing, as I've mentioned before, the NICs have to be Intel
Etherexpress model 82577 (one of those weird shape looking card) or the
PIX will not work. Now these cards you can get on Ebay very cheaply.

RE: how to build a pix firewall out of a PC box. [7:18335]

2001-09-09 Thread Hundley, Kent

No. Like I said, the problem is getting the right ISA flash card. I don't
remember the exact model I tried, but I could not get it to work. The PIX
bios is apparently coded to try a load itself from a particular memory
address on the flash card. If the card you get does not support loading
from that memory address it won't work. The easiest way around this would
be to get the card from Cisco, but last I checked they were very expensive
compared to generic cards.

The poster I was replying to seemed to be saying they found a Cisco flash
card for $100 and I was inquiring where they got it from.

My opinion on this thread is the OP should post their instructions complete
with the make and model of the ISA flash card they used.

The only other information that would be useful is if someone knows a place
selling _Cisco_ ISA flash cards for $100, or if someone has an ISA flash
card that they know for a fact is the same as the one Cisco sells or that
they know for a fact allows you to build a PIX.

I acutally have an old Pix ISA flash card that I removed to install the 16
Meg flash. I have tried it on another motherboard, but it comes up with
errors and just keeps rebooting. I am not sure if it has to do with the
network cards or not. I can watch it from the serial port (console), and it
gives me an error, then displays the config, a bunch of other stuff, and
reboots.

RE: how to build a pix firewall out of a PC box. [7:18335]

2001-09-05 Thread Sean Young

Mike Johnson [CCNP Security Specialist]

Re: RE: how to build a pix firewall out of a PC box. [7:18335]

2001-09-05 Thread James Willard

I personally would be very surprised if this was in fact possible without
requiring some serious hardware hacking. It's curious that the original
poster of this message was extremely vague in the details and it makes you
wonder whether or not it was just an attempt to create a few hundred "Me
too!" messages, which seems to have worked nicely. Will everyone -please-
stop replying "Me too!" and just ask that the person post the details to the
group if in fact it really is possible, which I doubt seriously.

Believe if I could find the info it would be here. All I found on the
newsgroup search was to search for Franken-Pix. If I find out any info it
will be posted here so we can stop with the me-too's. I am sure he is
overwhelmed now and hopefully he posts the info soon.

Hi Everyone,

For those who are interested in learning Cisco PIX but
do NOT want to spend a lot of money on buying an
expensive PIX Firewall, I think I can help you. I
have instructions on how to build a PIX firewall by
using a PC. In case you didn't know, PIX firewall is
essentially a PC with multiple interfaces. I've
successfully built several PIX firewall using my old
PCs (i.e. pentium 200 MHz processor). Actually, the
PIX1 series (obsolete I know) is a PC with Intel
EtherExpress Interface cards. However, you must have
an account with CCO in order the software and download
the software. The rest of the instructions on how to
build a PIX firewall using PC is very simple. Anyone
interested in learning it, let me know.

Mike

Re: RE: how to build a pix firewall out of a PC box. [7:18335]

2001-09-04 Thread anyong

Very interesting post : D

I've all the listed part apart from the flash card that need advice.

Is these flash card just a ISA adaptor (converter) and insert a 16MB PCMCIA
flash card or there are some flash chips build on the ISA board? If not,
what's the brand name? The Cisco brand cost 7xx!

Thanks

Hi Everyone,

For those who are interested in learning Cisco PIX but
do NOT want to spend a lot of money on buying an
expensive PIX Firewall, I think I can help you. I
have instructions on how to build a PIX firewall by
using a PC. In case you didn't know, PIX firewall is
essentially a PC with multiple interfaces. I've
successfully built several PIX firewall using my old

RE: how to build a pix firewall out of a PC box. [7:18335]

2001-09-03 Thread mike johnson

OK,

I've received a lot of request on how to build a PIX
firewall using old PC. I am going to show everyone
how to do it; however, before I continue, you must
have the following hardware. Otherwise, it will NOT
work.

1) a PC with at least 2 PCI slots and at least 1 ISA
slot;

2) 32 MB of EDO RAM,

3) Floppy drive. Hard-drive is NOT necessary,

4) The Network Interface Card (NIC) must be Intel
EtherExpress Card (model 82557). Other NICs will NOT
work,

5) A flash card that will fit on an ISA slot of your
PC. This flash card will load the software from the
Floppy drive onto the flash card. This flash card
must be 16MB if you want to run PIX code 5.3.2. If
you would like to run version 5.1.5 or lower, a 2MB
flash will do. I don't know how much the flash card
cost. You may get these flash card on Ebay or on some
auction site.

Once you have these things, I will send you
instructions on how to build a PIX firewalls.

Keep in mind that the PIX is very expensive. However,
PIX is nothing but a PC (IMHO). Instead of spending
3K for the PIX520, you can build your own pix for
under
$100.

2001-09-03 Thread mike johnson

Let me make it clear. The flash that I am referring
to is NOT the standard flash for Cisco routers. The
flash memory that I am talking about specifically
referred to as Flash that get inserted into the ISA
slot on the PC motherboard. Flash memory for Cisco
routers will NOT do the job.
