Re: Jeff Doyle Vol I or II? [7:24269]
That is the differance, vol2 has BGP and multicast, some IPV6 and NAT. Stuff that's not really in vol1 so It depends what you want to learn. If your really interested in BGP then don't get vol1 or vol2 but Internet Routing Architectures VolII :) Dave juno vtv wrote: > > Hi everybody, > > Does anybody know what the difference are between Jeff Doyle's Routing > TCP/IP Vol 1 and 2, besides BGP stuff?I have heard some conflicting > arguments about these books. Which volume would you guys recommend? Depends on what you want to learn. They cover different topics. Volume I covers routing in general, TCP/IP review, static and default routing, RIPv1, RIPv2, IGRP, EIGRP, OSPF, IS-IS, route redistribution, route filtering. It's superb and by far the best way to learn EIGRP and OSPF. Volume II covers BGP, multicast, and IPv6. I didn't buy it because I have other books on those topics. >Thanks! > >-junovtv Priscilla Oppenheimer http://www.priscilla.com Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7&i=24277&t=24269 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: Jeff Doyle Vol I or II? [7:24269]
In my opinion, Vol. 1 is a must-have book. You should run--not walk-- to your nearest bookstore and buy it. I've flipped through Vol. 2 and didn't feel compelled to buy it. I've heard that it is an okay book, but the material is perhaps covered better in other books. For instance, if you want BGP in a book you should get Internet Routing Architectures 2nd edition instead. Thank you guys for the info! I would like to get a book for IGPs and then one for BGP. So would you guys recommend VOL 1 and Halabi's IRA? What do you guys think of Caslow's book? -junovtv Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7&i=24284&t=24269 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I found both books to be excellent, there is a lot of valuable information in both. I agree with John on Volume 1, it is a must have. -Original Message- From: John Neiberger [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, October 26, 2001 3:10 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Jeff Doyle Vol I or II? RE: Jeff Doyle Vol I or II? [7:24269]
or neither. seriously. Doyle has his place in the study cycle. on the other hand, I found Terry Slattery's book to be outstanding, with some far more interesting examples. some of the exercises are definitely worth the extra study. I've written before about the Parkhurst BGP book, which I think on the whole offers far better CCIE Lab preparation material than does Halabi ( although maybe not as good in the theory department ) what it comes down to is where you are in your studies and your background. Somebody just starting in networking is probably going to gain far more from reading Lammle than Berkowitz. On the other hand, someone at the point of their studies or career where they understand Berkowitz might find Lammle far less worthwhile. RE: Jeff Doyle Vol I or II? [7:24269]
Are you referring to Advanced IP Routing in Cisco Networks 2nd edition and Cisco BGP-4 Commands? Thank you for the insight! I will consider these books for my library. Any other books you guys recommend that is not on the recommended reading list? I would be interested in hearing opinions about books that are not just for the CCIE, but to broaden one's knowledge. So if you guys and gals have a favorite, please share!!! -junovtv Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7&i=24313&t=24269 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Ok I ask which books you use to cover these topics Oz Priscilla Oppenheimer said.. Volume II covers BGP, multicast, and IPv6. I didn't buy it because I have other books on those topics. Re: Jeff Doyle Vol I or II? [7:24269]
For BGP, the winner is Halabi. For multicast, the winner is Beau Williamson. For IPv6, I just discovered a great book by an author who I have admired for over ten years, which is Implementing IPv6 by Mark Miller.
