2002-09-23 Thread Jeroen Timmer

Just build a 19rack where ya put in your switch .. I did to and you can
hardly hear the switch :)
I don't even have ventilation in that 19rack and the switch keeps on
running.

I can narrow down the field by telling you that my Catalyst 2828-EN (2820
series-- modular brother of the 1900-series) is NOT quiet. Mine makes so
much noise I avoided using it (and my Cat 5000), and used a combination of
quieter 3Com switch, 3Com hub, and crossover cables. This was a mistake and
prevented me from getting lots and lots of practice carving out VLANs on
switches early on in my preparation.

(Both of these white elephants are for sale, if anyone is interested.)

I would say no, there is no such thing from Cisco. It would be good though.

You have to ignore it or not use it. I had such complaints from my users
saying they couldn't concentrate. A week later asking the same Q, the users
said they are used to the noise already.

they're all VERY quiet when you unplug 'em! :-

seriously, I presume your home lab is not mission critical. Is there any
reason it has to run 24x7?Turning things off, and powering up only when you
want to put in some serious rack time ( as opposed to reading, then casually
trying a couple of things ) can help with your focus. Not to mention help
keep the cost of living down.

Hello,

If you are willing to spend a few dollars, you can buy a quieter
fan than those Cisco uses at most computer shows.

Of course, the reason why fans make noise is the turbulence coming
off the edges. I have a design for a fan with no edges that should run
almost completely silent. At first I was just going to cut the edges off,
but that was messy, so instead I tried wrapping a circle of material
around the fan blades. It moves with the fan and being a circle has no
edges. __
   /\/\
   \/\/

Of course, I haven't actually replaced any Cisco fans yet, since I
love the sound of helicopters taking off in the morning...
(you should hear the sound off the 2 Cisco 7000s I just got...!)

On my computer table, I have the monitor, the tower to the left of
it, and a tabletop shelf system containing external drives, cable/DSL
gear, etc. Not long ago, I glanced over, and Rhonda, the youngest of
my kittens, was lying next to the router. I suppose that it's nice to
have a Cat switch that, at most, purrs and occasionally squeaks.
