Re: Urgent: Anything wrong with this switch? [7:17045]

2001-08-23 Thread Brian

nothing wrong with it, but do you need a 5500? You can get a
5000 (Like 5500 but slower backplane I beleive), for about
$1000 with a SupI and power supply. The below router has
a SupII which gives you FEC ability, which although is
definitly fair game for CCIE, its not that difficult.

The 5113 was replaced by the 5213, you may wish to check if
there were any hardware issues with it. Sometimes Cisco made
"A" versions of some of those older modules and fixed nasty bugs.

Ask the seller to connect via the console and send you the results of the
power-up self test. Have the seller enter some show commands, such as show
system, show test, show interface, show port, and send you the results. I'm
not a Catalyst 5500 expert but I think those are right.

RE: Urgent: Anything wrong with this switch? [7:17045]

2001-08-23 Thread Daniel Cotts

Have the seller send you the output of a "show version" and a "show module".
Will you get blank plates to cover the unused slots and power supply bay?
Rack mounting brackets?
Can you get a picture or a guarantee that it doesn't have major dings.

At work I have a 5505 that didn't survive shipping. Bottom line is that
Cisco will repair it for $686.25. Make sure that it is properly packed,
enclosed in a plastic anti-static bag, and insured.

I'd check the specs on the 5113. Not sure that it will do trunking. Must it
be included in the deal? The Sup II should do trunking. Be aware that the
Sup engine has fiber ports. If you plan to use them, you will need a media
converter. Consider shopping for a 5225R blade that will do ISL, dot1Q, and
FastEtherchannel.

Never be afraid to walk away from a deal. If you have not already made a
commitment, consider the risk/reward ratio. Saving a few hundred dollars (at
best) against getting a boat anchor. There are reputable dealers who will
guarantee what they sell. Brad Ellis is a member of this list. I have
purchased from Jimmy Turco of OptimumData in Omaha, NE. (Former place of
employment of Neal Rauhauser who provided free labs to the list. Kitty labs
with Cat5ks).

I have paid quite a bit of "tuition" to learn not to be too anxious about
buying something. Be patient.

2001-08-23 Thread Brian Whalen

The lack of any warranty should provide a lower price for this. I'd be
curious about the testing if any the seller has done. Does it boot? What
is displayed when it does? Question is has there been testing done, and
if so what were the results.

That is enough for Layer 2 switching, trunking, FastEthernChannel, VLAN,
PVLAN. But you will need MSF or MSFC to test layer 3 switching.
