Voice on the Network

2000-12-01 Thread Kevin Wigle

Dear Group,

I'm sure some of you must be looking at VoIP for your various organizations.

For the data side, we have a policy of only using GD for IOS on the
backbone.

For telephony, you need to have a "T" version of the IOS but no "T" version
of the IOS is GD.

When we phoned up Cisco Tac just yesterday they didn't have any insight into
when a "T" series IOS will be GD.

So, what do you guys think? On one hand Cisco is pushing Avvid et al - but
on the other hand they don't seem to be supporting IOS sufficiently to those
of us who like the feel of GD.

Isn't this contradictory? (and you might well ask - what's new..)

Kevin,

I agree totally we have been battling VOIP troubles for a while and
almost from the outset Cisco's advise was upgrade. However, the upgrades
are usually to the ED version on IOSBut in their defense since they are
new to Voice arena they are constantly making changes, so we may not see a
GD series for a while...but we are currently running 12.1.2T ED have had no
problemsin a mixed environment of IP, IPX, and DLSWgood luck!

What to say !
If you want to use the GD then you have to forget the Voice function !

You can try the 12.1 ED but I want feel well with it.

You have to wait until the 13 to get Voice on the GD IOS.

Re: Voice on the Network

I hear ya.. but the Chief Architect won't use anything but GD on the
backbone.

But you still got to wonder how Cisco can talk about QoS when some
enhancements only show up in the T series IOS.

What specifically went "bump" for us is that we wanted to use the "jitter"
measurements (as well as others) for the rtr process - but only in T you
say! - pity.

I guess we won't be doing VoIP for awhile.

Please excuse my ignorance, but being new to CCNP (just started) I was
wondering what the difference is between IOS ED and IOS GD versions.
Is one beta, other production?

Re: Voice on the Network

2000-12-01 Thread Nigel Taylor

Hey Kevin,
At my job we recently implemented VoIP within the
existing network infrastructure and I must admit that it seems to run
flawlessly. It's been running so well I can't remember the exact IOS image
on the 3640 used to tie into the Lucent G3 PBX switch. What we did was
basically rebuilt all of our DHCP zones and built a default zone and binded
it to the tftp service on the gateway(MCS 7835) so the IP phones could
download their configuration. Now every segment on our lan that is tied
into the VoIP through our existing various 4006 boxes. When I get in
tomorrow I'll look into it and see what version of the IOS is on that
router.

Apart from that I got into a discussion with some "Foundry" folks over the
recent lack of Quality Assurance(QA) provided by cisco lately. I remember a
time when you got products from cisco and it plugged and played. Most
recently we've been receiving items that are defective. Not to mention that
in the last month alone we've changed IOS images on our backbone numerous
times due to various bugs in the IOS code. At one time we even worked with
cisco's crash recovery and router teams to eliminate problems we had
identified in the IOS images we used. So, Kevin as you can see this is
widely spread and not just IOS problem related to Voice and AVVID...

That Foundry stuff sure is fast. I'm compiling some stats on the
BigIrons and ServerIrons
we just installed.. I'll post them in a couple of days..

Nigel..

Re: Voice on the Network

ED = Early Deployment

Unlike main Cisco IOS releases, Cisco IOS ED releases are vehicles that
bring new development to the marketplace. Each maintenance revision of an ED
release includes not only bug fixes, but also a set of new features, new
platform support, and general enhancements to protocols and the Cisco IOS
infrastructure. Every one to two years, the features and platforms of the ED
releases are ported to the next main Cisco IOS release.

GD = General Deployment

LD = Limited Deployment
