Stus-List Yanmar 4JH-TE Repower on CC 44

2014-09-08 Thread Jonathan Boocock via CnC-List
The Yanmar 4JH-TE on our CC 44 went bang on the weekend. It was the last
thing on the boat that hadn't been replaced so in some ways it is a relief
to replace it. It is unclear whether we will go new or remanufactured at
this point.
I have been appalled in the past at Canadian pricing on Yanmar parts and I
suspect complete engines would be the same. Nonetheless I will probably get
a quote from a Canadian dealer.
Who in the US would be recommended to get a quote from? We were happy with
Bay Shore Marine on our way through Annapolis, does anyone have experience
buying a complete engine from them?
Is there compatibility with engine mounts , exhaust etc between the various
Yanmar models?
(4JH, 4JH2, 4JH3, 4JH4, 4JH5)
If so this could open up the number of potential replacements.
For remanufactured Schooner Bay Imports (Al Holzer) in WI seems to be
highly recommended.
Our current model is 56 hp but I think anything above 46 hp would be
sufficient so the non turbocharged versions would work fine and of course
the more recent non turbo versions have the same or higher horsepower.
Any guidance on who to contact based on your experience would be
appreciated.
Thanks, Jon

Jon,

This might sound to easy, but could you have wrapped something around the
prop shaft?

I had a similar sounding experience when a piece of heavy line wrapped
around the shaft. Had to clear it with a dive knife (took about 2 hours,
working with a flashlight) then restarted the engine and all was fine. I was
bringing the boat up from Florida, and it happened in southern N.C., so I ran
it for many hours after without any issues.

Re: Stus-List Yanmar 4JH-TE Repower on CC 44

2014-09-08 Thread Hoyt, Mike via CnC-List
Similar problem over weekend. Engine alarm and then shut off.
Apaprently engine restarted ok but no more fwsd or reverse. Then the
line that had fallen over the side was noticed with one end attached to
boat and other wrapped firmly around shaft. Shaft seems pulled back
approx. one inch. Transmission seems to be spinning but not shaft.
Hope to find out today if simple fix or a time consuming expensive one.
Was a lot of pressure on boat end of line so worried also about shaft
and strut. Hauling boat to repair. 3GM30

Re: Stus-List Yanmar 4JH-TE Repower on CC 44

2014-09-08 Thread Steve Staten via CnC-List
I had the same thing happen a couple of years ago. I was sailing alone and a
sheet from the jib got overboard as I was motoring back to my slip. A loud
noise ensued and I came to a slow stop with the engine running. The sheet had
rolled up the propeller shaft to the hull and in continuing, pulled the shaft
free from the rubber coupler that connects the propeller shaft to the
transmission. I wouldn't have thought that a single-cylinder Westerbeke gas
engine could have been so powerful as to rip up an nine inch diameter, one inch
thick rubber coupler without stopping. Not having access to a replacement, I
eventually had to construct one out of a polyester-threaded tire tread.
Creating the bolt holes was a challenge. It has worked just fine these past
three years and I always mind the sheets now.

Stus-List propane

2014-09-08 Thread Robert Boyer via CnC-List
We need to know more about your propane system. Is it the original propane
system? How old is the solenoid?

Also, how old is the wiring? If it is 30 years old and un-tinned wire--this is
a good place to start--it probably should be replaced. I have been in the
wiring replacement process for the last 10 years. Just this past summer, I
upgraded my propane system and replaced all the old wiring. (This project was
explained briefly on my blog on the blog post dated June 23.) I am now dealing
with old wiring on my engine gauges...

Stus-List Companionway hood

2014-09-08 Thread Michael Crombie via CnC-List

A couple of the screws are loose on my companionway hood, so I am planning on
removing it and giving it a good cleaning (and cleaning the gunk underneath it).

What type of sealant should i put into the screwholes when I put it back on?
4200? Silicon? Any advice would be appreciated.

There seemed to be quite the debate a few years ago about whether to seal the
entire underside or not. Mine only appears to have sealant around the screws
and i don't have any leaks (at least not around the companionway!) , so I'll
probably stick with that method.

Re: Stus-List Companionway hood

2014-09-08 Thread Steve Thomas via CnC-List
I just did mine and I confess that I used silicone on the screw threads
since I had it out and had been using it to re-mount the teak slide rails to
the plexiglass. I don't usually have silicone on the boat because I don't
find it very effective, but it was the only thing that would look right in
this case. Normally I would use 4200 or 4000uv. In this case the screw
penetrations are under the hood and not likely to get hit with a lot of
water anyway, so I figured it would be good enough. I did put a drop of
Captain Tolley's Creeping Crack Cure on the screw heads, as I have found
that stuff to help with window leaks, and deck leaks in general.

I was looking at a potential rebuild and talked to your guy Al. If/when I
have to rebuild/replace this will be the guy I use. Rebedding a different
engine can cost as much as the engine itself. He will rebuild yours (4
weeks) or sell you one of his...if he has one ($5700 + core). You'll be
hard pressed to find a better price new or used.

Mike,

Be sure to check your prop strut. Years ago a rope got wrapped in the prop of
a CC 36 I had in timeshare charter. It also shut off the engine then allowed
a re-start (as reported by the charterer).

When hauled it was obvious the force caused the strut to bend about 15 degrees.
 Shaft was also bent.

Similar problem over weekend. Engine alarm and then shut off. Apaprently
engine restarted ok but no more fwsd or reverse. Then the line that had fallen
over the side was noticed with one end attached to boat and other wrapped
firmly around shaft. Shaft seems pulled back approx. one inch. Transmission
seems to be spinning but not shaft. Hope to find out today if simple fix or a
time consuming expensive one. Was a lot of pressure on boat end of line so
worried also about shaft and strut. Hauling boat to repair. 3GM30

Jon,

This might sound to easy, but could you have wrapped something around the prop
shaft?

I had a similar sounding experience when a piece of heavy line wrapped around
the shaft. Had to clear it with a dive knife (took about 2 hours, working with
a flashlight) then restarted the engine and all was fine. I was bringing the
boat up from Florida, and it happened in southern N.C., so I ran it for many
hours after without any issues.

Jonathan,

When we replaced Perceptions Engine, we bought a Beta engine – imported it from

It was Yanmars Canadian pricing that caused us to look at other options – the
parts to rebuild were 2/3rds of the price of the beta – without touching the

Stus-List Companionway hood

2014-09-08 Thread Robert Boyer via CnC-List
I am planning to remove my companionway hood and check for leaks later this
Fall. Leaks into the hood are not an issue but I think the screws that fasten
the hood simply screw into the outer layer of fiberglass and penetrate into the
balsa core (like many other original fastenings). I will most likely remove a
little core in the area of the screws and check it for water. I will probably
drill out the holes to a bigger size (like 3/4-inch) and then fill them with
thickened epoxy. After the epoxy hardens, I will use a suitably sized pilot
hole so the screws have something to bite into. Even if it's not leaking into
the core now, if you've gone to all the trouble of removing the hood, why not
fix it so it will never leak? In this case, there wouldn't be much of a need
for any sealant.

In driving rains, I am getting a leak that exits near the companionway steps--I
think the companionway hood is the likely entrance for the water (unless it is
simply coming in at the companionway door). If this is the case (which I don't
know for sure yet) my balsa core is probably wet in the area. We'll see...

Re: Stus-List Companionway hood

2014-09-08 Thread Martin DeYoung via CnC-List
After repairing hundreds of holes in Calypso’s balsa cored deck, including 2 or
3 long gone versions of companionway hoods and dodgers I strongly second the
motion to drill/fill with epoxy, re-drill then seal under the screw.

Anything less runs the risk of water eventually seeping into the balsa. Small
amounts of water degrading the balsa around a few screws will not compromise
the deck strength but once enough water starts to flow “downhill” and work its
way to a low spot the potential repair area expands significantly.

If time does not allow the full meal deal, using a low viscosity epoxy, paint,
or other coating will help. I have not used any of the “creeping crack
repair/sealer” type products but have heard from people walking the dock past
Calypso as we work on the deck of it being used to seal balsa.

Stus-List Dodger install on a 27 MKIII

2014-09-08 Thread Steve Thomas via CnC-List
So I got a good deal on a used dodger, and now I have to install it. Never
having done this before I am a little intimidated at the prospect of drilling
another 25 holes in the deck and maybe not getting them in the right place the
first time. Anyone have any experience that they would like to share along this
line? The canvas is secured to the deck with lift the dot fasteners.

The traveller is on the bridge deck, so that limits how far back I can
mount the dodger, so getting the bow mounts positioned is the first thing, but
even that raises questions. How much back angle on the bow? Will this become
apparent if I put the canvas on it?

It is a Natty dodger, with one main bow, and one daughter bow mounted to
the main on slides.

Any helpful advice, or a pointer to procedural methods would be
appreciated.

2014-09-08 Thread Sylvain Laplante via CnC-List
Hi,
I have a Natty dodger ( and bimini ) that I bought from Genco a couple of years
ago, installed it myself with the help of the installation sheet that came with
it . I also bought the aft-welded handrail and side rails ( basically stainless
handles ). Very nice to have something to hold on when leaving/entering the
cockpit..

Even if the sheet was pretty clear, I ended up drilling the swivel holes on a
different location than the instructions said .
Maybe you can write to Jonathan Genco and he can fax you the instructions for a
CC27 or I can take pictures this week-end .

I wrapped each lift the dot screw with butyl, I did not have the time to do
the drill-fill-drill epoxy recipe as I usually does though.

Re: Stus-List Companionway hood

2014-09-08 Thread Ron Casciato via CnC-List
Bob: Assuming that the hood is similar to my 38MKII.some thoughts on
the process might be useful to you.

I've replaced the sliding Plexiglas 3 times since I've owned the boat (15
years)During the middle replacement, I decided to completely remove
the sliding components and made new teak ones but in the process, I noted
that since the boat seems to sit bow down a little (so it sails flat when
crew is in the cockpit), I was collecting lots of water and finally rotted
stuff in the small space ahead of the slide. That space holds about a half
gallon of water and over time it just gets gray and messy.

Since you will have the hood off, and since your headliner is easily
accessible, consider this.I drilled out the forward corners of that
space and led a flared stainless tube down to connect with some Tygon tubing
and then out of the cabin side just forward of the windowsThe exit hole
is about a1/4 and is cut at the same anagle as the cabin sides so it
doesn't show. All of the tubing is hidden by the headliner panels...

That area is now always dry and since there's a way out, I haven't had any
concern for over 5 years. Every spring, I run a wire snake up from the side
to clear anything that has plugged the holes and never found anything of
substance.

Your leak at the corners of the companionway is likely caused by the aging
of the sealant used in making that teak frame for the drop boards.I had
mine taken off this year and there was hardly anything behind it. So we
fabricated new ones from Starboard (seafoam matches our decks) and really
sealed the whole thing with sealant.

Been in for 4 months now and never a drop .since the bow down angle of
the boat at rest collects water up front, when you get in the cockpit, it
drains backward out of the trough at each side of the sliding part of the
hatch and down onto the bridge deck seat.before it used to collect at
the base of the drop board and then into the spaces on either side that were
unsealed.

Maybe the job should be expanded to take care of your current problem and
any future issues than can come up ..doing it now prevents you from
doing it again...

Best,

Ron C.

Subject: Stus-List Companionway hood

I am planning to remove my companionway hood and check for leaks later this
Fall. Leaks into the hood are not an issue but I think the screws that
fasten the hood simply screw into the outer layer of fiberglass and
penetrate into the balsa core (like many other original fastenings). I will
most likely remove a little core in the area of the screws and check it for
water. I will probably drill out the holes to a bigger size (like 3/4-inch)
and then fill them with thickened epoxy. After the epoxy hardens, I will
use a suitably sized pilot hole so the screws have something to bite into.
Even if it's not leaking into the core now, if you've gone to all the
trouble of removing the hood, why not fix it so it will never leak? In this
case, there wouldn't be much of a need for any sealant.

In driving rains, I am getting a leak that exits near the companionway
steps--I think the companionway hood is the likely entrance for the water
(unless it is simply coming in at the companionway door). If this is the
case (which I don't know for sure yet) my balsa core is probably wet in the
area. We'll see...

Stus-List Stereo finally works

2014-09-08 Thread Joel Aronson via CnC-List
After three years my stereo is fully functional. I replaced the old stereo
with a Sony unit after I bought the boat. One of the 2 interior speakers
worked and the 2 cheapo West cockpit speakers worked.
After spending way too much time, I finally figured out that the speaker
wire was to corroded to carry a signal. Initially, I replaced most of the
wire with household wire. DONT USE HOUSEHOLD SPEAKER WIRE. That lasted
about a season. I finally replaced all of the wire with marine grade wire.
Then I discovered that the rubber around the speaker cones disintegrated.
I bought 5 1/4 inch car speakers that fit into the enclosures for the cabin
speakers, and then found out the cockpit speakers did't work. Turns out
someone twisted and taped the connections. New crimp connectors fixed
them.

Finally, 4 working speakers!
Now, need to upgrade the cockpit speakers.

2014-09-08 Thread Jake Brodersen via CnC-List
Joel,

I’ve had Poly Planar speakers inside my cabin for a long time. They work well
and came with the boat. I installed Bose 131 speakers in the cockpit, but
after a number of years one of them quit working. Corrosion ate through one of
the leads to the voice coil. Bose offered to repair it for $50 or $75, but I
opted for a new set of Poly Planar Platinum speakers. They look good , fit the
old holes, and sound great. Actually, I had to enlarge the holes slightly, but
it wasn’t a bit job.

If you are looking for the source, here they are. I bought mine from Compass
Marine. It seems that the other one can sell smaller quantities.

There is a downside to it: if you want it shipped to Canada, the cost is
about the same as the tape (around $30). It is worth its while to order more
(cost of shipping is the same) and share.

Btw. I can share one roll at cost (and it is already on the Canadian side of
the border).

Btw2. No association with either of them, but supposedly this is the best

What type of sealant should i put into the screwholes when I put it back on?
4200? Silicon? Any advice would be appreciated.

There seemed to be quite the debate a few years ago about whether to seal
the entire underside or not. Mine only appears to have sealant around the
screws and i don't have any leaks (at least not around the companionway!) ,
so I'll probably stick with that method.

Thanks,

Mike

Hi
I am interested in at least one roll, perhaps 3, if long term storage is not a
problem.

Btw2. No association with either of them, but supposedly this is the best
 butyl tape around.

 Mike,

I used butyl tape when I replaced my companionway hatch. It is foolproof
stuff to work with and seals great.
