Re: Stus-List Able bodied crew available in Toronto Area

2014-09-11 Thread Colin Kilgour via CnC-List
There are always boats looking for race crew here, but if you're not in the
network of sailors it can be hard to get started.

If he has any sailing connections he should leverage them.

If not, print up a flyer and post it at all the chandlers and yacht clubs
in town. They all have bulletin boards for such things. You can also hang
around the docks at some of the bigger clubs on race night and let it be
known you're looking to crew. There's almost always someone with a crew
member stuck in traffic or at the office. (Of course, you have to slip
past "security", but that's dead simple at most clubs - particularly on
race night)

Most clubs also have crew and associate member categories, but I wouldn't
fork out for one of them until he's found a boat to crew on, because he
could end up forking out for a membership at one club and then getting a
ride on a boat from another club.

(As a specific tip, Port Credit Yacht Club runs its J24 fall series every
weekend until freeze up. Those guys often need crew as the weather gets
colder and people start to think about winter activities)

Good luck.

Cheers,
Colin

Likely the same as most other clubs National Yacht Club has a membership
category
for crew. Thanks to a few skilled computer programmers at NYC there is a full
online crew
bank with skill level and preferences that automates the matches and emails
everyone.

Every spring the club runs a special non-certificate Introduction to Keelboat
Sailing.

http://thenyc.com/learn.php
...

This course runs two nights a week over seven weeks and provides participants
with a
basic understanding of keelboat sailing, with instruction both in-class and
on-the-water.
Topics include boat parts, wind, weather, basic on-water safety and equipment
(clothing, etc.),
sailing terminology, knots, rules, cruising, and some in-depth racing
strategies.
This is a very popular course and space is strictly limited, so please be sure
to register early.

...

The deal is the course is $417 which includes one year of introductory crew
membership,
normally priced at $276. Also includes a text book and a graduation dinner.

After some in classroom instruction the students get a walk around on club
member's boats,
then go out for a sail, and at the end may go out for a race night specifically
set up for the
training boats. The course is usually sold out.

Changing topics here - that was a large storm yesterday. At one point on radar

of the

I thought that when this subject (Yacht Club Crew Membership category ) came up
before, the consensus was that most Clubs did not offer this category - or
force crew on Cruising boats to join. I would be very interested to hear what
Clubs are now doing, and if they require membership by crew what the annual fee
is.

Pequot Yacht Club (Southport CT) does not have a crew membership category. No

2014-09-11 Thread Steve Thomas via CnC-List
Wind here got very high between 8 and 10 pm. and caused some damage to our
docks for the second time this season.
This is rare for us as the docks are a mile or so from the mouth of the
harbour.
Gusts recorded at the weather buoy south of Port Stanley reached 45 knots, and
it was a south wind we were dealing with.

Re: Stus-List Able bodied crew available in Toronto Area Now Yacht Club Crew Membership

2014-09-11 Thread Michael Brown via CnC-List
I should have said ...

In the context of clubs in the Toronto area with a club racing program I think
many of the clubs
offer an associate - crew - junior ...  membership categories.

At NYC anyone can come in as a guest of a senior member for cruising or racing,
even on a
regular basis. I think crew membership entitles the person to free club parking
and a 7x24
access card. Without it parking is $5 a night on race / event nights and may be
restricted
during regattas.

The other benefit of crew membership is the one week a year that throws terror
in the hearts
of all the skippers, Crew Race Night. We take a new crew member that has
limited helming
experience and switch everyone's position on the boat. First, second and third
get their own
flag awarded that night. Now I realize that may sound silly, put at $276 for a
flag it sounds
pretty inexpensive compared to what the owner spends ;-)

Stus-List Lake Superior Storm

2014-09-11 Thread Maturo, John via CnC-List
bin. What you see in
the cockpit in the YouTube video is a Fusion MS-WR600 wired remote. I can
control all the functions of the cabin mounted unit from the cockpit remote.
(Not just the volume) I installed the remote in an existing access port so I
didn't have to drill additional holes in the cockpit. The access port was
factory installed to access the shore power plug and other hidden stuff. I used
two sound exciters per channel. (4 total) The foam adhesive rings that hold the
exciter in place has a very aggressive adhesive. I did however sand the
backside of the cockpit seat backs to create a very smooth surface. Final grit
was 400. The exciter sticks much better to smooth surfaces. There is some
information about the specific sound exciters that I installed located in the
description on YouTube. When the cncphotoalbum.com site had the FORUM
functioning, I had posted some still photos of the actual exciter installat!
ion with an explanation of the installation. I guess that's gone now unless
Stu can set up the FORUM again.

Yikes. Is there a term for that? Square waves are when the height equals the
period, but that's twice as bad.

I was just sitting here worrying about Odile. The forecast
track *was* to go straight up the Sea of Cortez, but it now looks like it'll
hit Cabo and La Paz dead on. The outer edges are just hitting here and it's
three days away. Listening on the radio, there's a boat on the beach already.
It's not that bad, so they must have had a foul up with ground tackle. Don't
know any more.

Three soaking wet hours later... all I can say is 'Oh, it was *that* boat.'
I've checked it out every time I'm in this anchorage, and have wondered for
years when this was going to happen. It was a 36 foot trawler, with light
ground tackle, that hasn't moved in six years. At least it wasn't a sailboat.

You know the type. Skinny crazy guy with a beard, and a recently acquired
skinny crazy woman on board, and a boat that looks bad from 100 meters away.

Guys like that give Crazy Gringos like me a bad name.

Heck, the Mexican Navy showed up to help, and a half dozen folks got out of bed
to help tow it off the rocks. The captain seemed to think he was a victim of
an Act of Cod (sic) and he deserved all the assistance.

  Subject: Stus-List Stereo finally works

After three years my stereo is fully functional. I replaced the old
stereo with a Sony unit after I bought the boat. One of the 2 interior
speakers worked and the 2 cheapo West cockpit speakers worked.
After spending way too much time, I finally figured out that the
speaker wire was to corroded to carry a signal. Initially, I replaced most of
the wire with household wire. DON"T USE HOUSEHOLD SPEAKER WIRE. That lasted
about a season. I finally replaced all of the wire with marine grade wire.
Then I discovered that the rubber around the speaker cones disintegrated. I
bought 5 1/4 inch car speakers that fit into the enclosures for the cabin
speakers, and then found out the cockpit speakers did't work. Turns out
someone twisted and taped the connections. New crimp connectors fixed them.

  Finally, 4 working speakers!
Now, need to upgrade the cockpit speakers.

Re: Stus-List Able bodied crew available in Toronto Area - Now Storm

2014-09-11 Thread Marek Dziedzic via CnC-List
Apparently, this is a season for weird winds. We were hit last Friday night (a
week ago) with some strong winds. Britannia YC (just around the corner)reported
55 kt wind for a while (until the anemometer stopped working). Our Club was all
but missed – the docks were generally not affected, but some dinghies and
trailer boats were turned over in the yard. A few (poorly) furled genoas got
unfurled by the wind.

Changing topics here - that was a large storm yesterday. At one point on
radar it went as
far south as the Pittsburgh area and north maybe half way up Superior. I went
out racing
in it. Thankfully RC set 1.1 mile legs once around. Saw 24 kts winds under
spinnaker and
7.6 kts boat speed, but just can't catch the J/22 and J/24s downwind. A
couple of the
sport boats finished in under 22 minutes. Guessing it was 17 minutes upwind,
5 down.

I think what you are asking is simply how to tighten up the screw holes?
If so, what I did on mine was to ream out the holes a little with my handy
Dremel tool and an eighth inch rasp.
Then I inserted some SS helicoils, I think #10 NC, put a little vaseline on
the screws, screwed them in the helicoils so I could remove them, and bedded
them in the holes with thickened West System epoxy. Worked like a charm.

A couple of the screws are loose on my companionway hood, so I am planning
on removing it and giving it a good cleaning (and cleaning the gunk
underneath it).

What type of sealant should i put into the screwholes when I put it back on?
4200? Silicon? Any advice would be appreciated.

There seemed to be quite the debate a few years ago about whether to seal
the entire underside or not. Mine only appears to have sealant around the
screws and i don't have any leaks (at least not around the companionway!) ,
so I'll probably stick with that method.

Re: Stus-List gel coat colour

2014-09-11 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
Generally, the C&C deck color is "smoke white" which is a blend of brown, black
and yellow. Best bet is to rent the Instint gelcoat colorbook from
Fibreglast.com, match the color and order a quart. F155 is a close match for
Touché's deck.

I repair gelcoat quite often and find that using that colorbook works better
than trying to tint it yourself.

Re: Stus-List CNG for stove

2014-09-11 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
Converting your stove from CNG to propane is simply a matter of changing the
orfices in the burners. My new Frigidaire gas stove (in the home) actually came
with a set of each. The CNG jets were factory installed and the LPG in a
package attached to the installation instructions. The delivery people
installed the LPG jets when they installed the stove. Talk to an appliance
vendor.

I don't think I've ever heard of a CNG stove in an RV, so the lack of
information is not surprising.

Your tank and regulator should have manufacturer labels on them. See if the
manufacturer can identify the local installer for you.

The CNG system is another matter. CNG is methane gas and lighter than air so no
need for a vented locker, sensors, etc. The tank is at much higher pressures in
order to store a useful amount of gas (systems on forklift trucks can be up to
3000 psi) and you still store a lot less fuel than in a similar size LPG tank.
There is probably an expensive two stage regulator to bring the gas pressure
down to 2-3psi. And it is hard to find anyone to fill your tank. You might ask
your municipal gas company or the local bus company if they can either fill the
tank or identify someone who can.

The benefits to CNG are that it is safer than LPG, it burns hotter so cooks
faster, and it is ridiculously inexpensive (which is why most new buses run on
it).
