Stus-List Older style Autohelm wheel pilot popping out of gear

2014-12-27 Thread Kevin Driscoll via CnC-List
My older style, black box, Raytheon St4000 (Mk 1?), wheel pilot started
popping out of gear randomly. The lever that engages the wheel is popping
up on it's own and not engaged when this happens. Does anybody have
insight? This is one of the few pieces of kit I haven't had to fix yet.

While we are at it, if you have working spare parts, especially a wired
remote, I would be interested in them.

The control has looks like this :

Re: Stus-List Older style Autohelm wheel pilot popping out of gear

2014-12-27 Thread wwadjourn
Kevin,
The guts of wheel pilot not complicated. Remove from wheel and pop the two
halves apart. You will see the the lever/cam which engages is held in place by
very small Pins which can sheer off and allow cam to move freely independent of
lever. I suspect this is the problem. You will need small push pin or drift
to remove the pin and broken off part. Back end of small drill bit may work
for you. Or heavy needle.
I took broken pin to a local Fastenal store and bought some replacements cheap.
Hope this helps. Just tear into it and you will figure it out.

Stus-List Vents and Rain

Re: Stus-List Vents and Rain

2014-12-27 Thread Russ & Melody via CnC-List

Hi Dan,

As you probably know, raindrops bounce. You must
keep the bounce out of the vent hole into the
boat. What you linked is essentially a hood,
next is required a baffle to keep the wet from
getting below and a box to make it all elegant.

With this arrangement it does not need something
that can close during downpours. However, if you
simply attach a vent then you will need something
that can close during downpours.

The current best arrangement was popularized by
the racing yacht Dorade and became known as the dorade vent.

2014-12-27 Thread svpegasus38

Hi Dan, I keep Pegasus at Shilshole.  Come on by if you are in the area. To
answer your question. The vents sit atop a Dorade box. It has a stand pipe off
set to the vent. This allows air to enter but funnels the water through drain
holes in the side of the box. There are also caps that replace the vent scoop.
Hope this answers your question.DougPegasusLF38Just west of Ballard, WA

Re: Stus-List Vents and Rain

2014-12-27 Thread Steve Thomas via CnC-List
Dan,
the dorade boxes mentioned in your other replies do not exist as stock
equipment on your C&C26. You have 2 of the vents pictured on the transom of
your boat, same as on my C&C27. On mine, one goes to the engine compartment
blower, and the other just dumps out into the bilge at the bottom of the engine
compartment. A small amount of rain can and does get down that type of vent,
but the wind has to be blowing into the opening before you will get more than
the occasional splash, so with both vents pointing aft and the boat at anchor
or on a mooring, you won't get much water down them if the boat sets mainly to
the wind. Anyway, I haven't heard anyone complain of particular problems from
rain water with that set up. (probably going to hear a few now) I would be more
concerned with sea water in rough seas.
In direct answer to your question, the particular vents in your picture
come supplied with plastic plugs that can be used to replace the vents. There
is a chance that they are kicking around the boat some where. I bought a new
pair for my boat because the old ones were getting pretty skuzzy, and they were
identical to the originals except for their condition, and they came with the
plugs.
