Re: Stus-List Too cold to email?

2015-01-08 Thread Jean-Francois J Rivard via CnC-List

It went down to 14 F last night in the Atlanta area. That's in pretty
sharp contrast with the 65 or so we had this past weekend.

A couple days ago one of the members of my club posted that 2 local boats
sunk last year due to engine / trans casings cracking from freezing and
subsequent flooding caused by open seacocks..

Today I had some time so I decided to go down and take some temperature
readings on the engine block, hoses, and such with my infrared pyrometer
while it was still cold outside..

That was an eye opener: outside temp: 18 , cabin temp 46 or so, Hull temp
40 (Still in the water), engine block / hoses / transmission case temp:
 32..

Too close for comfort. I looked everywhere, everything seems fine but I
definitely changed the heaters setup. Instead of having both in the main
cabin with one set to really low temp / act as a backup they are now both
set for about 55 degrees / high speed fan with one in the aft cabin
blowing into the engine compartment. I use Caframo True North heaters
and yes, all seacocks are closed (I always close them when leaving the
 boat)

 Stay Warm !

Stus-List Life rafts

2015-01-08 Thread David Paine via CnC-List
Hi All,

Here's a cold day topic ...

I am aiming to compete in the 2015 Bermuda 1-2 race in my vintage CC 33-1.
(my boat won't be the only old CC). My pretentions are modest -- think
Eddie the Eagle rather than Moitessier, but I have sailed to Bermuda and
back several times and I have done the offshore qualifying run (several
times as it turns out) in my own boat. I am now prepping the boat (new
sails, replacing Rod, optimizing autopilot, increasing solar capacity) and
acquiring the race-required safety equipment.

The most challenging and difficult-to-swallow part of this is the cost of
an offshore life raft. Rental rates are impossible: $1200/ for 7-14 days
and I would need at least three weeks since the return race starts two
weeks after the outbound leg. The purchase cost of a raft ($2200 plus
ongoing recertification costs) is hard to rationalize for a single race
especially when the boat is only typically used for coastal sailing but
I'll swallow it if I have to. However, if there is anyone out there in
CC-land with a raft that needs re-certification, I would be happy to have
that done in return for the use (ummm, hopefully not) of the raft during
the month of June.

This will likely be the first of many questions as I prep for the race in
the coming months.

Keep warm!

I too am in the same boat (raft?).

We are doing the Marion-Bermuda Race again this year and I checked on rentals
as we have done in the past.

From $800 to $1,250!

Although an open-ended offer to re-certify would probably be as much as renting
I am open to discussion if anybody else has any ideas. Taking care of the
other David, of course, takes priority.

I will definitely check on Vane too.

David,

Too bad your race starts the day after the return leg of my race begins --
we could have worked-out a deal.

I too am in the same boat (raft?).

We are doing the Marion-Bermuda Race again this year and I checked on
rentals as we have done in the past.

 From $800 to $1,250!

Although an open-ended offer to re-certify would probably be as much as
renting I am open to discussion if anybody else has any ideas. Taking care
of the other David, of course, takes priority.

I will definitely check on Vane too.

 David,

Sounds awesome! I know a CC 41 that does the race regularly. Vane Bros.
in Baltimore charges $500 for a raft for a month, but transporting it may
 make it cost prohibitive.

  Hi All,

  Here's a cold day topic ...

I am aiming to compete in the 2015 Bermuda 1-2 race in my vintage CC
33-1. (my boat won't be the only old CC). My pretentions are modest --
think Eddie the Eagle rather than Moitessier, but I have sailed to Bermuda
and back several times and I have done the offshore qualifying run (several
times as it turns out) in my own boat. I am now prepping the boat (new
sails, replacing Rod, optimizing autopilot, increasing solar capacity) and
 acquiring the race-required safety equipment.

The most challenging and difficult-to-swallow part of this is the cost
of an offshore life raft. Rental rates are impossible: $1200/ for 7-14
days and I would need at least three weeks since the return race starts two
weeks after the outbound leg.

This will likely be the first of many questions as I prep for the race
 in the coming months.

  Keep warm!

  David

Back in the 80's I was crewing on a J-24 practicing for the early spring Suma
Cup regatta in Kobe Japan. It was a cold winter day in the PNW with daytime
temps in the teens.

We pulled the J-24 trailer up to one of Shilshole Bay Marina's bathroom
buildings and ran a hose to the hot water supply to wash the ice off the boat's
deck.

It was still much too cold to complete significant crew training and practice
but the slightly warmer decks helped prevent frostbite at the movable
ballast/deck interface during our 2 or 3 hour sail.

On New Years Day 2015 we brought Osprey (30-2) back from Hood River, OR
(where we spent the Christmas Holiday and weekend) to Portland where she is
berthed. It was 14* when we left the dock at 7am (The dock lines were very
tough because frozen) and didn't reach above 25* till late afternoon. We
had a rollicking sail down the Columbia in 35+knots on the tail. We hit *12.3
knots* GPS speed under 100% jib alone! (with some current assist.) The
biggest problem was that the water froze solid to about 1/4 thick on the
side decks, and the jib sheets were frozen from the few times we dipped the
rails in the water. It was a bear to bend them around the winch and the
self tailer was worthless.

I had two hands on the wheel nearly the entire time, but did manage to grab
this shot of one of the buoys. That white stuff is solid ice! The transom
photo was taken about 3pm when it finally started to warm up and melt some
of the ice gathered along the way.

OK, you win. It was only -5 degrees F here with clear skies (until
about 1 pm). About 8 inches of snow on the ground with another 6-8
expected this evening into tomorrow.

There was a LF 35 on Craigslist Annapolis this week. Think they wanted 25k.

Went to South Haven to check on Corsair this morning and I noticed a
1981 CC Landfall 35 for sale just down the line from Corsair. I have seen
this boat around the harbor before. What is listed on the For Sale sign is:

 1981 CC Landfall 35
 New Yanmar 27 hp Diesel
 269-845-4384

I tried to get close enough to check the hull number. I believe that it
 is Hull #21.

From memory, the boat has a blue Bimini and Dodger. I have never been
aboard to see the interior. It appears to be in good shape. I don't think
 the owner did much upgrading.

I have a few pictures of the boat from when I was planning our Dodger and
Bimini. Please contact me off list if you want any of them.

Re: Stus-List CC Landfall 35 For Sale

2015-01-08 Thread Della Barba, Joe via CnC-List
That boat is on Yachtworld. It has the normal layout that I like, not the
giant table in the bow version I don’t care for as much. (YMMV depending on how
many you sail with).
The new-ish engine seems like a nice thing to have.
