Re: Stus-List Handheld VHF with GPS and DSC

2015-02-22 Thread Chuck S via CnC-List
Dennis,

You got me thinking about the HX870 too. Found a review that shows worthwhile
improvements over the 851: bigger screen, better button interface:
http://www.panbo.com/archives/2014/11/standard_horizon_hx870_handheld_vhfgpsdsc_powerhouse.html

I'm curious about the feature where the unit tracks other DSC group members?
This would be a really nice feature to have for racers especially solo racers,
in case they need to assist someone in trouble. If this works, I expect there
will be many brands copying this good idea and RCs will require it in future?

Subject: Stus-List Handheld VHF with GPS and DSC

Dammit, Joel. Now you started something. I was perfectly happy with my handheld
VHF until you got me looking at the new ones.

Mentioned it to the Admiral. She kinda likes the idea. We started asking
ourselves why we would need a handheld VHF with GPS and DSC. We have DSC, AIS,
all that stuff in the fixed unit. The only time we use the handheld is in the
dinghy.

We came up with a few justifications for the upgrade. Like:

* a health emergency while we were in the dinghy
* attaching it to a throwable and tossing it to a MOB
* keeping it clipped on the bowman in case he (me) goes overboard
* we can sell the old one on eBay
* we just want one
C'mon listers, why else would we pop for a new handheld VHF?

FYI, I'd probably buy the Standard Horizon HX870 for $210.

When making a list for the Defender
sale, always check for manufacturers rebates on the items you are
going to purchase. Make sure that you aren't losing a $30 rebate
by waiting for Defender to lower the price by $20. Sometimes you
get lucky and can combine a sale price AND a rebate.

it states that if the handheld is PURCHASED after 1/1/15, then it must have the

Stus-List New searchlight for the boat

2015-02-22 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
After a lot of research and querying the list, I finally bought a new
searchlight for Touche'.

I bought this one:

http://store.marinebeam.com/marinebeam-ultra-long-range-cree-rlt-illuminator/

It is pretty darn phenomenal. After using a pistol grip Q-beam style
light for years, it will take some getting used to. This light is a bit
bigger and heavier than a MagLite 2 D cell flashlight. The MarineBeam has
3 D cells.

The biggest difference is the narrow beam. They claim it has very little
spillover light to reflect off lifelines, deck, shrouds, bimini frames,
etc. I certainly remember having to hold the old searchlight outside the
lifelines in order to prevent being blinded by reflected light. When
pointed forward, the Q-beam did, indeed, generate night vision destroying
reflected light from deck, shrouds, etc.

While I haven't tried it on the boat yet, a quick test in the neighborhood
showed very positive results. It VERY clearly illuminated a stop sign 300
yards away. The beam was, indeed, very narrow. (Fortunately, my
neighborhood is fairly peaceful. There are neighborhoods where I wouldn't
do this.)

At first I was concerned about finding buoys and day beacons with such a
narrow beam but when I thought about it, it shouldn't be a problem. Most
reflectors on marks are 2-10 feet or so above the water, a fairly small
area to search.

Easy DIY
Teak is not the only choice. Iroko is an adequate substitute. The original were
made of mahogany. You can even use recycled pvc planks made for backyard decks
(not the prettiest, but say adios to varnishing)

DIY, you need a ten feet planks of something, a hole saw (ideally on a
press-drill) and a router to do the rounding.

Curtis,

They really aren't hard to make. Just need to get some full 4/4ths teak. Mark
out the loops. Use a hole saw of a radius that matches the curve if the loops
and drill holes. The you connect the holes with a jig saw. Next use a router
to round the oval holes. Finally cut the thing in half lengthwise and sand it.
Done.

Re: Stus-List New searchlight for the boat

2015-02-22 Thread Chuck S via CnC-List
Thanks Dennis,

I also started using cheap camper's headlamps for night and stopped using my
Q-beam. It is amazing how well a small LED light can reflect off of markers in
the dark. I keep at least three of these things aboard, all small, cheap but
reliable. The batteries last a season. Gave one to friend when we got caught
out after dark, after a fireworks display raftup. He we was very grateful and
bought more for work and his car. Handsfree, they now come with switchable
white, or red LEDs and I use em for a thousand tasks. I save the Q-Beam for a
rescue signal device.

Subject: Stus-List New searchlight for the boat

After a lot of research and querying the list, I finally bought a new
searchlight for Touche'.

I bought this one:

http://store.marinebeam.com/marinebeam-ultra-long-range-cree-rlt-illuminator/

It is pretty darn phenomenal. After using a pistol grip Q-beam style light
for years, it will take some getting used to. This light is a bit bigger and
heavier than a MagLite 2 D cell flashlight. The MarineBeam has 3 D cells.

The biggest difference is the narrow beam. They claim it has very little
spillover light to reflect off lifelines, deck, shrouds, bimini frames, etc.
I certainly remember having to hold the old searchlight outside the lifelines
in order to prevent being blinded by reflected light. When pointed forward, the
Q-beam did, indeed, generate night vision destroying reflected light from deck,
shrouds, etc.

While I haven't tried it on the boat yet, a quick test in the neighborhood
showed very positive results. It VERY clearly illuminated a stop sign 300 yards
away. The beam was, indeed, very narrow. (Fortunately, my neighborhood is
fairly peaceful. There are neighborhoods where I wouldn't do this.)

At first I was concerned about finding buoys and day beacons with such a narrow
beam but when I thought about it, it shouldn't be a problem. Most reflectors on
marks are 2-10 feet or so above the water, a fairly small area to search.

Actually, to be totally honest, I wasn't wearing swim trunks. Does
anyone know how to safely remove Marvel Mystery Oil from the male
genitalia? I sent an email to Moyer Marine but haven't heard back.

Please don't suggest Acetone. I tried that. Ouch. VBG

Stus-List Marvel Mystery Oil

2015-02-22 Thread Wally Bryant via CnC-List
Okay, I've had it. This is the second time. I've noticed over the last
many years that plastic bottles here in Mexico tend to bereally thin. A
few years ago a bottle of Marvel Mystery Oil exploded in my cockpit, but
at that time it was on the sole and made a huge mess on the ocean.

Today another bottle exploded on me when I tried to open it. It was
just a result of cheap plastic packaging. My entire cockpit, including
myself and the swimming trunks that I wear, are covered in Marvel
Mystery Oil. I'm at anchor, so this is a big deal.

Eff this stuff.
