Had a great sail a couple of days ago. Gorgeous day. Temperature in the mid 70's, moderate breeze, flat water. Right out of the harbor, we raised the main, unfurled the genoa and settled down to a great sail at 6.5 knots. Jimmy Buffett playing softly on the stereo. A pod of dolphins played in the bow pressure wave. A couple of mermaids swam by enticingly close and waved at us. A remote controlled drone delivered us a couple of frozen margaritas and some awesome snacks. Then I woke up. :( Reality: too hot to sail. Dennis C. Re: Stus-List Boat time and weather - race report
I am in pretty much the same weather pattern as you Richard, and we have had some very high water levels in Kettle Creek, but last weekend did turn out to be a pretty good one on Lake Erie. We had the 50th running of the L.E.I.R. (Lake Erie International Race) from Port Stanley to Ashtabula on Friday, a distance of 49 nautical miles. Conditions were well nigh perfect for the race, with 10 - 15 knots of wind somewhere between a close reach and a close haul all the way across. There were 32 boats in all, with CCs and Tartans being the most represented manufacturers, but I think that CC had a slight edge numerically. I won a hat and a bottle of Mount Gay, for getting a third in my fleet. As usual we had a good time partying with our friends at AYC on Saturday. There was not enough wind to complete the Childs Cup race back to Port Stanley on Sunday. There was a clear sky overhead, but an odd haze on the lake, which we later found out to be smoke from all the forest fires out west. Re: Stus-List Deck repair
Charlie, Epoxy or vinyl ester resin, your choice. Both will work. If you have epoxy and the proportioning pumps, use it. If you're comfortable with vinylester, use that. I'd use epoxy or resin wetted cloth or roving. Fill to near level. If you use the epoxy, wash it with TSP and rinse with LOTS of water. Then finish it to elevation with 3M Premium Filler or equivalent putty. Sand level and apply your Kiwi Grip. The secret here is the putty. Covers lots of imperfections and sands easily. Dennis C. I would think it would be better to get at least a prime coat of paint over the epoxy, not only to help the KiwiGrip stick, but also for UV protection in case the KiwiGrip gets damaged or thin in spots. Uncoated epoxy doesn’t do well in the sun. Re: Stus-List Deck repair
Charlie, I will be painting Kiwi Grip over many sq. feet of epoxy/filler repairs completed or underway on Calypso’s deck. Over well cured epoxy I am painting an epoxy based one part high build primer. Over the primer most of the repairs will also be covered with a two part topsides paint. The Kiwi Grip will go over the top coat. Over on Sailing Anarchy, in the fixit forum, there is a contributor that sells Kiwi Grip. I expect he would be able to confirm its compatibility with various primers and top coat paints. My expectation is it will cover/bond well over most primers and paints but would prefer not to be painted directly to un-coated epoxy. I have done a lot of fiberglass construction with epoxy and thought I would mix up a batch with some cotton fiber filler and just fill the hole. Alternatively I could wet a bunch of fiberglass tape I have with epoxy and then top this off with some thickened epoxy. Then I read about gel coat repair and it says that this won't adhere to an epoxy repair so I maybe I should fill the holes with thickened gel coat so that eventually some Kiwi Grip will stick to it. I need to fill it this weekend before the balsa core gets wet from rain, etc. although I have put a thin coating of epoxy on the balsa to protect it temporarily. Re: Stus-List Vessel Documentation Fee
Fees for initial documentation and for changes also went up at the same time that the new renewal fee became effective. IIRC it was part of some budget bill that made user fees dependent on the clerical costs involved in the process, or some such. There is an explanation on the USCG Vessel Documentation website. And the USCG has also asked for comments about a proposed rule change to allow for multi-year documentation. The comment period may be over, but you might still get a chance to endorse the idea, Joe. I know I sent in a comment. I agree, it’s not the $, it’s the PITA paperwork. And as far as dollars go – you could be in North Carolina, where the legislature is proposing a “Coastal Boating Fee” for boats over 24 ft. and all fishing boats that will be $195 PER YEAR (in addition to the current $55 per year registration fee) for my 38. The money is purportedly to be used for dredging the inlets and ICW…. But I noticed a $6 million dollar earmark for buying right of way for the proposed new bridge over Oregon Inlet. I had a fitting on my tank plastic welded, it's good as new. Since you're taking the tank out anyway it's a good time to clean it .. filled mine with water and bleach and let it stand that way overnight then rinsed and repeated. Stus-List Fwd: Re: 37 Plus Below-Deck Autopilot
You can drop the rudder by attaching a rope to the cross bar in the top of the rudder shaft. If I was doing it I would probably use a wire rope and a short section of pipe over the rope to shield it from being cut. My stern sits high enough that the rudder post is never in the water while sitting idle. My rudder does not appear to have been re-machined. It does have a keyway the entire length of the shaft. Same situation though with dropping the rudder. It can be done in the water. They are nearly neutrally buoyant so with a man in the water lower the rudder with the previously described rope. Once lowered below the hull. A second rope can be attached and a crane or davit can be used to lift the rudder from the water. Josh On Jul 8, 2015 4:40 PM, Ken Heaton kenhea...@gmail.com wrote: I suspect if you try for Josh's set up you'll likely have to drop the rudder to take to a machine shop to cut a key-way into it as there isn't likely to be a slot for a key where you will need it. I would consider doing all of the glass work and framing now and when the boat is hauled finish the project by removing the rudder, making the required cuts and then reinstalling the rudder. Re: Stus-List Boat time and weather
Richard In the East we had an unusually snowy winter and major amounts of ice beneath it. In Halifax for the first time in 20 years the Northwest Arm froze completely for half its length and there were ice skaters enjoying the activity. By late April there was still ice blocking the Arm completely. On April 25 we were sitting in our club and saw two boats from Armdale Yacht Club sailing out to the Harbour. This was the first weekend that the ice had cleared allowing anyone out of Armdale by water Apparently when they returned later in the day the ice had moved back and blocked their path. Some careful maneuvering and a bit of ice breaking was involved. Normally this body of water does not freeze over. Also the huge amounts of snow and cold winter and Spring made for a very late start to our boating season. We did not even launch Persistence until April 30 and that was only by force of will and digging paths thru snow banks to commission the boat Mike Persistence Halifax From: CnC-List [mailto:cnc-list-boun...@cnc-list.com] On Behalf Of Richard N.
